Happy Black Goth Appreciation Day!
June 21st 2019.
This day is a celebration of the entire black goth/alternative spectrum, including individuals who are perceived by society as going against their “cultural norm” in some way or other. Black Goth Appreciation Day was creating by Dining with Dana in 2017 under “Black Goths Are More Visible” to celebrate the increased acceptance of nuanced imagery of black identity by those outside of alternative subcultures. It is a way of honoring those who went through (or continue to go through) challenges in asserting themselves amongst a world where outsiders view goth as purely white. The aim is to appreciate our ability to share alternative black voices, looks and build communities across borders within minutes by using these very resources today. With every year, black goth visibility increases, and we must remember that each one of us plays a part in advocating for the normalization of our image. However you choose to honor your fellow bats in black, make sure to have lots of fun!

Elizabeth Taylor’s eloquent and powerful speech while accepting the Vanguard Award at the 11th annual GLAAD Media Awards in 2000. (1 of 3) After her dear friend and co-star Rock Hudson announced that he had AIDS prior to his passing in 1985 (the first high-profile celebrity to do so), Elizabeth—against great opposition during the fear-based AIDS hysteria and stigmatization prevalent in the 1980s—immediately organized a fundraising benefit to raise money for AIDS research (she later stated that she had the phone hung up on her repeatedly while trying to enlist the help of other celebrities with the benefit, and that some people thought she was “crazy” for getting involved with the cause). After Rock passed away on October 2nd, 1985, she also organized his memorial service and soon after became the co-founder (alongside Dr. Mathilde Krim) of the first AIDS research center amfAR. Her separate Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation was established in 1991 with the specific focus of providing nutritious meals (as well as medical and financial assistance) to people living with HIV and AIDS. She also lobbied the U.S. congress to contribute more money for AIDS research and education, devoting the last twenty-six years of her life to the cause. After Elizabeth passed away in 2011 at the age of 79, a large portion of the $115,932,000 raised at the Christie’s auction of her legendary jewelry collection was bequeathed to her charity in order to continue providing the services and assistance she believed were important in perpetuity.

Does anyone else love bad weather? Like the kind that’s loud and dark and draws attention to its self like pounding rain drops and thunder and lightning that seems just so close. And you can sit near a window and it’s dark outside and maybe you’ve got a candle lit or a lamp and it’s so warm inside and you’re wearing you’re favourite sweater and watching a good show or reading a good book and it’s beautiful outside the rain and the clouds and the sound of it all and you’re just so content and cosy and happy
