can we talk about the fact that there is a slim chance Athena is not merely questioning the foundation of her marriage but rather her identity and the changes in her life that are happening all at once? at her core, she knows who she is—mother, sergeant grant and wife.
as far as we can see, her entire world has revolved around her family and now both children out of the house with Harry having left the nest sooner than she was probably ever prepared for. outside of her family, is her work. when she’s not at home, she’s Athena in a police uniform and with talks of retirement from not just her husband but her superior as well—that’s clearly something she is struggling with. she’s not daughter anymore, hasn’t been for quite some time. she’s still Bobby’s wife but time and time again, before she even married him, she knows that’s a tenuous grasp because as she well knows, anything can happen at anytime. she could lose bobby and lose the identity of wife.
when Athena lost Emmett, she had the job to hang on to, but she’s at that stage in her life now where if she loses Bobby, she won’t even have that. her kids don’t need her as much as they used to and, honestly, outside of her friendship with Hen and the 118…who else is there? she has no family left in LA save for May who is out there spreading her wings. Michael is, ironically, out in Florida closer to her parents than she ever will be.
as far as we know, she’s never met any of Bobby’s family. and as much as I want to look at them as a found family, the 118 is Bobby’s. sure, if anything happened to him they wouldn’t leave her alone but…at the end of the day, when all is lost, who would Athena trust in the end if Bobby’s no longer there?
but this is just a random thought…i’m typing as these thoughts are bouncing around in my head and i don’t know where this is going. but i understand why Athena is spinning out. her identity and her place in life is shifting and she’s understandably scared. it probably doesn’t help that her fear of cruises makes her think, yeah, we’re going to die. and then what?

Just in case it got wrong. I never said or wanted to imply that Bobby and Athena didn't have any development or didn't work on their communication as a couple since S4.
What I wanted to say is the root of their problems wasn't fully explored by the writers (as many things weren't for several characters), instead it was pushed aside, because they mostly brushed it off until a proper opportunity.
The proper opportunity is now, while reintroducing the characters in a new network. And as i said it won't kill anyone to watch the writers revisit their marriage problems. The writers revisited a lot of characters points, so i don't see the issue or annoyance in having a bit of focus on this aspect of bathena relationship.
In fact, the main reason of that post was me being slightly annoyed on people believing Athena is being ooc or at fault for this situation when the fact she is actually showing these flaws and insecurities is a huge win and show of personal growth considering her character as whole and in no way she is at fault for feeling insecurities around her relationship with her husband outside their usual routine.

I’m sure it’s been said but I am loving how they’ve presented Bathena as a couple this season
Bobby especially is so incredible. He’s funny and he’s supportive (investigating Lola & Norman with Athena) and he’s clearly so very comfortable and confident in his relationship.
He calmly but firmly let’s Athena know that he sees what she’s doing (avoiding him for whatever reason) and he doesn’t appreciate it and isn’t gonna let it go, but also apologizes if he’s been pushy about cruise activities and works to find a compromise so they can spend time together. It’s clear that they are a stable and established couple who have been together for a while, know each other well, and don’t think a disagreement is the be-all end-all of their relationship !
Bobby being like ‘you’ve never had a migraine last less than three days’! Like! He knows her!!!
And despite their clear issues going on, they’re slowly starting to discuss it. They’re not mean or angry or raising voices. It’s so respectful and such a ‘whatever is going on, we’ll get through it as a team’ dynamic.
also Bobby is such a simp who loves his wife so much he doesn’t even care what they do on the cruise as long as it’s together
obvs don’t love whatever Athena is avoiding with them but am very much looking forward to learning more and watching them navigate this!!! Together! In love! As partners!
Like! This is thee couple that the rest likely take some cues from! Probably Hen least of all, as she’s been with Karen longer than Bobby and Athena have been together, but I digress! For new viewers especially this is such a solid showing of their relationship. I’m so excited
