Peer Feedback
My peers picked out the best three images which they thought I could use as my hero image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One person liked the first two images and believed they were the strongest, whereas someone else thought that the third was the best because of the colours and it relating to my theme more. I am still deciding which one I will choose as my Hero Print.
They agreed with me that I should remove the daytime photos from my zine because they don't fit with the others being at dusk and dawn.
My peers thought that I could use my surfboard fin photo as the first page of my zine with the most text on it.

Hero Images (5)

These are the images that I consider my 'hero images' as they easily represent my theme and they are quite strong. These will help me choose which image I want to print physically with Cornelius.

Week 10 - skills
Technical skills I wanted to improve - At the beginning of the project I wanted to improve my camera skills in terms of using the viewfinder more often rather than the screen. I did this because I can't see the updated exposure settings through the viewfinder. Also practicing using the correct numbers in the exposure triangle to best suit the lighting situation. I wanted to use my telephoto lens for a lot of the shots to capture the surfers up close when I can't physically get close enough, so it was good to practise keeping it steady and using the high shutter speed to my advantage.
What have I learned or improved this semester - I have become better at shooting in darker lighting scenarios such as at dusk with the low lighting and adjusting the f-stop and Iso to make sure the images aren't grainy, as they were a bit grainy as a result of the first two shoots I did. I have also learned to use my telephoto lens effectively for each situation.
Next steps: in terms of learning - analysing the layouts and compositions of the spreads in Betty Zine, then testing them with my own images. Exploring how I can use text to 'compliment' the images rather than degrade them, using my comm design skills to my advantage.

week 9
How are you progressing?
my work has evolved vastly from my initial idea, as I was originally planning on just photographing all surfers, and thinking that the images I took at the surf competition at Mangawhai would be some of the final images. I have now come to realise that Betty Zine is a great client and goal and by making images for them, I am able to explore women empowerment and purely women surfers. My images have evolved from simple abstract images of the waves and water, to more compositional, and though out images or the surf lifestyle surrounding women.
Return to the learning matrix - are you where you need to be to achieve your personal learning goals?
A skill from the matrix that I wanted to improve on during this project was improving my camera skills. At the beginning of this project for the first two shoots, I had some of my settings wrong such as the Fstop and ISO which made my images grainy which I only realised in post-production this was mainly because I was taking most of my images in the evening with low lighting. I have now learnt, thanks to a bit of research and my peer buddy, that If I have the ISO on auto, and have my shutter speed on high to make the waves crisp, then adjust the Fstop, then the images will come out much clearer.
I have also stepped out of my boundaries by photographing a model which I haven't done much of before. This wasn't necessary for the project but it would enhance it if I had a broader range of images to help create zine.
My peer support buddy is Oskar, he will help with feedback and critiques of my photos and reflective statement.

Recent feedback for Lecturer
I need smaller text that compliments the photo in the zine. I should print the zine in the same size and paper stock. Take a broader range of images like things on the beach and closeups of people.
Come up with and angle and theme such as photos at dawn and dusk, why… because that’s when its quiet and means beginnings and endings? The lighting and the colour is used to make the ocean beautiful?
The photo of the surfboard on the roof he really likes and could even be a double page spread - make the car more exposed. I need around 8 spreads as well as the cover with logo. The only thing I am making is the featured article photography section in the Betty zine which is the ‘photo essay’ which is like a photo book with very small amounts of text
The blurb (on first image/page) should be about the images and where and about my ‘theme’ dusk ect. And women empowerment?

B&W vs Colour
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Betty Zine have a few images in their book which has black and white images and they look very effective. I thought this was a good idea to experiment for myself. The photo of the model works well in black and white and I have also tried it with the surf board on the roof photo and it is less successful as it's missing its summery warm yellow colour.

Best Images from Campbells Bay Shoot
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When doing this shoot I had a plan with me along with some reference images which I took inspiration from. I found that most of the photos I took were very spontaneous and a lot of the good ones came from the model's (Brianna) ideas. I got her to try look as natural as possible while in certain stances as well as going off and doing her own thing which I was able to capture. Some of my favourite images are of her laughing which is very natural and they show a cheerful and positive vibe.

Photoshoot planning
Tumblr media
This is an initial plan I have made for next week's shoot, I am unsure what day it will be yet as I have given Brianna some options. It will be during the sunset at Long Bay - close to her so easy to get to. I will also try to recreate the image similar to Lou burtons which I took of myself during my last shoot.
Location: Campbells Bay

Week 9 Main Mission
Today I made the most of my time in class by going to level 7 and seeing Cornelius, he explained about the different printers and then I booked a printer for Monday 20th. I chose this date because I have an image in mind that I would like to print, but I am completing another shoot next week so by Monday's time I will be able to pick the best image to print.
Tumblr media
I have also created a mindmap as planning for my reflective statement.
I have contacted my model Brianna and mentioned that I will need her for a shoot next week, making the location close to her work to make it easy for her, and I am waiting for a reply. In the mean time, I can plan the equipment I will need to bring such as my surfboard and what she can wear ect.

Reflective statement mind map
Tumblr media
I made this mindmap to help get my thoughts and write down which shoots I have done rather than looking at the shoot folders in my files. I have identified the key things from these shoots including challenges. I will refer to this when writing my reflective statement.

Week 9
Next 3 steps:
Contact Brianna as my model and organise a time and place to meet for a shoot next week. Plan a shoot with Brianna (if available) with a shot list, materials, references images ect.
book a time with Cornelius to make a print with my best image (choose the best image)
Create test layouts for my zine and do test prints. Buy paper stock that matches the official Betty zine for printing.
Current state of my campaign:
in the last two weeks, I have done a few big shoots at Tauranga (Papamoa) as well as one recently at Muriwai. My Betty zines have been delivered so I was able to asses those and start to plan the layout and specific content for my own Betty zine mockup. I have been carefully selecting the best images that i will feature in my zine but this is subject to change as I may replace some images to make sure I have the best and most appropriate for the zine.
What is yet to do:
I need to complete my final photoshoot to get the last images I need. I couyld do without these images if I had to but it would be nice to have a little bit more variation and try challenge myself to start photographing a model. There is a few photos of models with surfboards in the Betty zine so I wanted to try this for myself. I will complete this shoot next week.
Challenges:
My biggest challenge is that it is hard to photograph women, as each time I go to my locations, it is mainly men who surf (which relates to the purpose I am photographing for) otherwise there are no surfers which means I have to cleverly adapt on the day and make use of what I am able to photograph such as the scenery and waves/water.
Solutions:
I will organise to photograph a model next week. Some of the images in the Betty zine are also more scenic and don't feature people so I can choose some of these photos I have taken to use in my mockup zine.

Week 9
Summarising my campaign:
The aim of my campaign is to produce surf and beach photography for my client Betty zine, which is compatible to fit into the Betty Zine as a featured article (6-8 pages). My main deliverable is a mockup zine in the same paper stock and layout as the Betty zine. I will also produce a print with my best image. My project will be successful if my images fit the same style, look and feel as the images in the Betty zine. My biggest goal is to send my photos to the submissions area of Betty and have my images featured in one of their upcoming printed issues.

Front Cover Options
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I took inspiration from one of the spreads in the Betty Zine, and I liked the title of the photography section which was done by one person. I looked for an image that had some white space where I could place the text and I liked the handwritten script font which was similar to another title page I saw.
