Last week was a great week for online discussions relating to Intranets. On Monday, Alex Manchester of Step Two Designs posted an article to his blog asking whether the term Intranet is dead. His thoughts were sparked by a recent presentation by Jane McConnell of NetJMC and the conversation that ensued was a healthy dialog on the future of Intranets, their relevance in a world of social media, and whether the term "intranet" was really the best way to describe an interactive workplace. The conversation continued throughout the week and I'd encourage anyone who works with Intranets to check out the threaded discussion and add their $.02.

Tuesday continued the interesting online conversations as Jarrod Gingras of CMS Watch made his predictions for technology in 2010. One of particular interest to me was his prediction #1 that:

1) Enterprise Content Management and Document Management will go their separate ways

ECM as a marketing and technical concept has great validity. But the idea of having a single overarching platform to manage all sources of content management only works well in those parc central residence price  enterprises that follow a unified and services-oriented architectural approach to IT.

In other words, federated search will become crucial to organizations that choose not to implement a structured ECM architecture.

The results of this kind of shift are as follows:

1. Content and documents will reside in their native application, allowing the information to have more context than if it were stored in a centralized ECM system. 2. Those ECM vendors who wish to provide value to the enterprise must figure out how to store the content centrally, yet serve it back to end users in a context that is meaningful to their end users. 3. ECM vendors who provide true, enterprise-scale software MUST offer a full services-oriented architecture that will allow business applications to easily access the content and surface documents in the context of the business application.

So... this brings me to my question of the week. Is Enterprise Content Management going the way of the Intranet and becoming an outdated notion? Will better federated search technologies negate the need for a central repository? Are organizations better off investing in the functional elements of ECM like document management, records management, and business process management instead of buying the whole enchilada?

Cost-Effective Conclusion

Even though the inter-building infrastructure was not able to be exploited in most cases, a flexible approach meant that a cost effective solution was possible in Central London. All the familiar national chains of hotels can be found in and around Coventry. Britannia Hotels have one at Rye Hill in Allesley, which is on the north western edge of the city. Prices can vary according to how and when you book a room. A standard double room could be anything from £35 to £90 a night, excluding breakfast which is an extra £10. By booking in advance and over the internet you're almost certain to get the lower price offered to you, making this a good three star hotel to stay in as it also has a restaurant for evening meals and, of course, its own bar. If you want a three star hotel with a more central location the Menzies Leofric is one you can consider. Located on Broadgate it is opposite the cathedral and about as central as you can get to the city centre. Given this very central location the price for a double room is more expensive at around £60 a night, for a basic room including breakfast if booked in advance and online.

With three star hotels like the prices given above the two star and budget hotels are starting to feel the squeeze. However, there are plenty of budget hotels to choose from in Coventry. For example the Ibis on Mile Lane, just outside the city centre to the south, offers rooms on week days from £56 a night excluding breakfast, or around £45 a night at week-ends. However, the Formule 1 hotel in Coventry, also on Mile Lane, has a weekday or week-end double room available at just £26 a night, excluding breakfast which can be obtained for just £2.50 extra.

Uzbekistan Airways operates a fleet of modern aircraft from a number of international destinations into its hub, Tashkent. Airfares are expensive because of their virtual monopoly. Try Asiana or Turkish Airlines, who also have flights.

Upon arrival, you'll find that customs clearance is chaotic. Some of the officials forms are in Russian and you will need the copy of your arrival form to be able to exit. Don't take photographs in or near airports.

Soviet style trains connect most cities. The daytime express linking Tashkent and Bokhara is the fastest, taking 6 and ½ hours. Most overnight trains are slower with four persons to a sleeper. Take your own snacks and bottled water.

By far the simplest way of getting around is by car with an English speaking driver. Don't expect perfect English. If you are in a group you'll find a modern, clean coach service is available.

Most of the top tourist interests are located in the city centres and within easy walking distance. Taxis, which are old and unregistered, are the major means of getting around. But they are cheap. Negotiate your fare in advance. Ask your hotel reception to tell you how much the fare should be. Few drivers speak English so carry a map or guidebook that shows your destination. Carry a hotel card to indicate your return. If you are going somewhere remote, you can usually negotiate a waiting fee and the return fare.

Tashkent has a modern metro system with three lines. Tickets were 400 som (about a quarter). The exchange rate in December 2008 was 1380 Som to 1 US dollar. US dollars are widely used for retail shopping. Notes must be clean and unmarked. Most ATM's don't accept foreign cards however most shops and hotels do.

The Best Time to go The winter in Uzbekistan is cold and severe. The Navrus festival is in March but April-May and September and October are ideal.

You'll need layered, practical clothing. Lots of areas are dusty. Take sunscreen, sunglasses, toilet rolls, antibacterial hand gel, bottle drinking water and a flashlight.
