Ive never heard of graveyard symbology! What is that? :0c
*sighs happily* Ah, graveyard symbology.
This is the symbols used on gravestones, and depending on the time period, have different meanings. Many have changed over time, but their roots can be viewed across varying centuries of gravestones.
Popular symbols are:
The skull with wings, later changed to a head or cherubs head with wings or sometimes an hourglass with wings. A symbol to remind the living that death comes swiftly.
An urn. Usually draped with a heavy cloth. Symbolic of the separation between life and death.
Clasped hands. Usually symbolising love being inseperable even in death.
An open book. Representing the Book of Life, final judgement by god etc
A lamb. Seen often on children's graves. Symbolic of Jesus or an innocent life.
Hands. Can be pointing up (reaching for heaven), down (heaven taking the person) or two hands in a priest's blessing.
Sculptures and statues are also very big in the symbology, with weeping women, angels, sleeping couples or ancient cadaver tombs.
These were far more common in past eras, with modern gravestones having the capacity to have images of the deceased, the sanitization of death through the funeral industry, and also a wider acceptance of varying symbols, beliefs, etc. But they still are used.
