okay americans i gotta ask because as an European i grew up with lots of american shows and cartoons and in a lot of them there was an episode where they give the protags a doll or an egg or a bag of flour or whatever and told them pretend to be its parents or something
#I did this but with a fancy ass robo baby doll#it was one of those things that sleep cry and shit but it was for teaching so it also could tell when it was being handled roughly#it was a blast#I was also the only person in my class to enjoy it#i would have gotten a 100% care report from the baby’s computer but once it refused to take a bottle and so I got dinged#teacher still referred to me as mother of the year tho

Astarion obviously loves having a partner he feels "safe and seen" with, but I think what he'd find more shockingly wonderful is when he finally believes the fact that he makes them feel safe and seen too. That's one of my favorite facets of his: he doesn't want a savior; he explicitly says he wants to be an equal partner and a support for them in his own right.
But think how much that goes against his history. He's spent 200 years as the monster set to prey on others and has been preoccupied the whole time with saving himself. He would find it so hard to believe that someone would really look to him for comfort. In a relationship, I think it would sneak up on him in small moment after small moment until his partner says something offhand about home being with him, and it's a quietly seismic event in his world, shifting his perspective of himself in a way he never thought was possible.
