Tina Ambani’s Stint as a Tasteful Art Collector
“To me vintage textile is art, a comb from ancient India is art, dance is art,” says Tina Ambani, Chairperson of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. Sounds true because that’s how an artist views any creation that’s got a narrative to it, blended with liberated expression and the right mix of detailing breathed into it. Tina Ambani has been long known to be a tasteful and a very thoughtful art-collector. It is not just about her rich collection of paintings that pretty much reflect the astute eye-for-detail she has.   From collections of F.N. Souza, Sudhir Patwardhan, Jayshree Burman, to Bikash Bhattacharjee, she is an art-collector of sorts. She remarks, “Some people think ‘oh, she’s just a rich housewife buying art’,” since consciously she knows that the people who still want to see the former actress in her, are thwarted. But then she adds, “The artist in me moved on to other arts." No wonder, she had done a meticulous job encouraging not just the successful ones, but the budding artists too. She has been drawn to a marriage of art, aesthetics and historical authenticity which shows.
She asserts that she has become a collector “unconsciously”. This was a result of her plunge with being the dowager of Harmony Art Show that started off as a concoction of arts from senior and emerging artists. So as to boost them, she would buy their works herself, thereby forming the groundwork for what later on went onto become a remarkable collection. Being an artist herself, she has had a close affinity to creativity. When she had started with the show, she originally did it with the thought of promoting textiles. She had this realization that Mumbai had a dearth of awareness for art even if the inception of it happens in the city. She realized that having a lack of disposable income, artists were struggling and being an artist herself, she wanted to give them a platform. And that’s how Harmony art happened. All the art-works were specially commissioned and she would feel bad that just four-five of them would sell and the rest of them didn’t so, she would buy them herself. And that’s how she started to build her collection. In those times, the paints were imported just the way canvases and brushes. The idea behind this show was that all this was done not to just give an exposure to the artists but to support him/her completely.
Tina seems to be uniquely drawn to the convention of miniature in India. She feels while they may be small in sizes, there’s much more content in them. She feels that the miniatures are characterized by much more detailing, story and history along with depth. She feels that it is astounding how miniatures that in such a small space, they narrate so much. She feels that the art of today has changed dimensions and definitions. According to her the detailing and the precision like an Orijit Sen shows in his works is absolutely stunning since he’s quite adept at taking something from a comic strip to an art form in the miniature.
On her collaboration with the museums, she says that she’s on the board of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Boston which has had a deep association with India. She opines that the West have an exquisite way of taking their art forward. She hopes to translate what she has learnt over there in India. She says that she hopes to create a museum, but it will include everything that can be seen as an art. She adds that she would like to create a space where art is comprehensible and available. Mumbai Metro Crosses 60 Crore Ridership Mark: Here’s What You Didn’t Know About It
“Be like a train; go in the rain, go in the sun, go in the storm, go in the dark tunnels! Be like a train; concentrate on your road and go with no hesitation!” said Mehmet Murat ildan a noted author once. Cut-to today, this statement of his, couldn’t have resonated more, given the metros in Mumbai have come out to form the heartline the way people travel in the city, if not lifeline. With its completion of five years ever since June 2014, it crossed the ridership mark of 60 crores in 2019 in the month of October.
As a matter of fact, in the first year of its operation itself, setting an unprecedented benchmark for public transportation by way of metro, from June 2014 to June 2015, Line 1 transported over 92 million commuters, and made over 130,000 trips, covering a distance of over 1.4 million km. Further, the line carried an average of 2, 63,000 commuters on weekdays. As of today, Mumbai Metro One operates 422 daily trips on weekdays.
Some Facts & Figures: For a city where life is measured by the amount of time you put in travelling, it is just not the sheer number of people that the Mumbai metro carries that matters. The story goes beyond that. Here are some quick facts and figures to give you a pulse.
It is safer compared to the suburban stretches, where eight people reportedly die daily, while crossing the tracks or falling off the train as people jostle to get in and out. The average road travel time from Ghatkopar to Versova which gets drastically slashed from 120 minutes to a little over 20 minutes. Headway on the line is 3 minutes during peak hours and 5 minutes during non-peak hours (11:30am and 4:30pm). The footfall on top 3 routes for Andheri to Chakala, Ghatkopar-WEH-Ghatkopar and Andheri-WEH-Andheri is 6.17 lakhs, 5.49 lakhs and 3.40 lakhs respectively. As of now it still maintains its count of being the 8th highest passenger density of any metro line in the world.   The metro has spacious stations, concourses and refreshment facilities, besides ATMs. It also has interchange facilities with important railway stations like Andheri and Ghatkopar. In early January 2019, a strike by BEST staffers saw a spike in the ridership of the Metro and the Monorail. Daily ridership crossed 500,000 for four consecutive days with an average increase of 55,000 per day with ridership touching 520,000 on 11 January. It operated 1, 35,248 trips between October 2018 and September 2019 with punctuality performance of 99% and train availability of 100%. Also, there have been celebrities who preferred traveling from metro over their cars like Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan who took a metro to attend to a friend at a hospital and to save himself the trouble of being stuck in traffic and Salman Khan who launched the season 13 of Big Boss by travelling through Metro. On concluding notes, Mumbai Metro has drastically changed the way the commuters travel in the city. Also, it has lent them with the much-needed avail from the commotion that comes from traveling in the bustling local trains.

Tina Ambani vs. Nita Ambani: The Poles Apart Daughters-in-Law
There’s an adage that says that all the elegance is in the mind; and if you have got that, the rest in life follows. But there’s one stratum of people who are born with elegance, and there’s this other sect of people who create an illusion of it. The case of Tina Ambani and Nita Ambani respectively does not fall an exception to this rule. Today, these are the women who are behind the most dynamic business tycoons Mukesh and Anil Ambani. However, the similarity starts and ends with the letters of the names of both leading ladies of the family share.
The younger daughter-in-law shot to fame as Tina Munim, the Gujarati chic who became a household name with her perennial hits. She came a long way right from starring in Dev Anand’s flick Des Pardes to being the chairperson of Kokmilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. And somehow, she seemed to be a cut above the rest be it from her charity art shows, to her work for the senior citizens and now steering the operations at the hospital.
On the other hand, Nita Ambani, only tasted fame after she was wedded to Mukesh Ambani. So while Tina was already a celebrity, Nita, came from a middle-class family and was a primary school teacher who reached the shores of limelight years after her marriage to Mukesh.  As a matter of fact, Tina gave up her independent life and moved in with her in-laws anjd Kokilaben till date has a distinguished fondness for her. But then Tina right after her marriage to Anil started off her art projects and opened up avenues for budding artists. Whereas, Nita only ventured into her work-life post Dhirubhai’s demise. Till then her role was limited to attending to guests at home and Reliance AGMs.
What’s really interesting about Tina is that she prides herself in being just another working woman in the city. She says, “I have no hang-ups. I have a very normal busy life and we have 130 doctors that I interact with.” Today, her role has scaled up to the national level as it sees the completion of its 10 years. The hospital project came to her by chance and she built it from the scratch right from its construction to building its potent team so that it meets the international standards for healthcare. 15.  Under her stewardship, it is the only hospital in Mumbai to receive accreditation from the JCI (Joint Commission International, USA), NABH (National Accreditation Board for Healthcare, India), CAP (College of American Pathologists, USA) and NABL (National Accreditation Board for Laboratories, India). Recently, raising the bar for healthcare efforts she spearheaded the opening of 3 new cancer centres in Maharashtra, in the cities of Akola, Gondia and Solapur.
Nita, on the other end, is more inclined towards accomplishing chiseled looks, flamboyance with social events and hosting events with unprecedented grandeur. For instance, the weddings of her twins Akash and Isha formed to be the most extravagant highlights of the year 2018. The long list of high-profile guests, the exuberant décor themes, and the innumerable wedding outfits, the pictures of them had got the social media on fire.  All about her looks, family watchers say Nita has been through discreet backchannel coaching, grooming and finishing sessions by the best in the business, weight-reduction programmes, and numerous photo-shoots during which she picked up the “best angles” to show the camera.
It is through her these grooming sessions that she got her today’s new distinctly new personality. And then how can we forget Nita’s grand merrymakings for the IPL wins. Her advent into IPL per se On the other hand, Tinastays comfortable in her skin, tied-up working perennially for the set-up of the remaining 15 centres across Maharashtra. This goal, she aims to accomplish till 2022. Surely, these traits set the two Ambani daughters-in-law poles apart. Tina Ambani’s Leadership Inspiration: Steering Her Cause by Her Passion
“We all dream alone, are triggers our own and the abilities to craft our destinies, ultimately rests with us. Leadership by its very nature is an individual impulse”, said Tina Ambani chairperson of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani once. Tina seems to have reflected these facets of leadership quintessentially in her approach all along. She started off her journey in Bollywood depending solely on her instincts and turned out to be one of the most phenomenal actresses of her times. So much so, that she became a household name with her back-to-back hits owing to seamless finesse in acting, always up her sleeve. Of course, she had a Godfather like Dev Anand, but once she got out of the nesting period, she winged out high and sky became the limit for her success. Much same was the course for her when it came to handling the project of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. Anil Ambani: Setting a Precedent for Unprecedented Values
“We value virtue but do not discuss it. The honest bookkeeper, the faithful wife, the earnest scholar get little of our attention compared to the embezzler, the tramp, the cheat”, said John Steinbeck an American author. The media today seems to have conveniently devoured the fact that they are more the vices than the virtues that should take centre-stage in reportage since according to the media fraternity, drama, action and misdeeds sell. Hence, the ones who had made it big once, but now are seeing tough times, have been made to suffer because our mainstream media does not seem to get enough of the fact that they have been stricken off the bandwagon of the plutocrats. What grabs the spotlight is where they wronged and the whole charade starts there. It’s more about the ‘have-nots’ than the ‘haves’. In case of coverage about Anil Ambani, the picture couldn’t get any worse. The media was more concerned about what was he not doing right than what he did right in the past. What they missed on, is the fact that in life failures are as spontaneous as night after a bright sunny day. But on an afterthought, Anil Ambani has been quite resilient to all this humiliation that he has been put through. His calm demeanour speaks volumes the way he holds onto his family values. Recently he was spotted at the Badrinath-Kedarnath temples with his family. Anil and Tina looked completely absorbed in devotion reflecting their firm religious values. And this was not the first time the family visited the temple. They have been frequenting the temple every year. While the infighting between the brothers during the split was portrayed in such a fashion as if they are washing their dirty linen in public, very few of them mentioned the way Anil offered an olive branch to his elder brother Mukesh. He said, “I sincerely believe that Mukesh Bhai and I can, even at this late stage, sort out all our disagreements, in a constructive, cordial and conciliatory manner”. This was during the case of his elder brother’s company Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and alleged favouritism towards it by the oil ministry at the cost of national interest. He added, “Throughout this very trying period, I have maintained the greatest of love, affection and respect for Mukesh Bhai—as I have done since my birth," he said. “There can be no better gift to my mother, Smt. Kokilaben Ambani in her 75th year, and to the legacy of our beloved father, Shri Dhirubhai Ambani, the proud creator of the Reliance Group." As a matter of fact he once fondly quoted about his relationship with his brother saying it was of “great personal respect and super cordial”. His humility comes from his staunch values that have been instilled in him by his father Dhirubhai Ambani. On being asked whether he sensed an air of unfairness around what he got as a part of the family settlement, he said, “I did exactly as my mother wanted. Nothing else prevails. If my mother would have told me to walk with whatever clothes I was wearing, I would have touched her feet and done exactly that”.  He added, “Please remember that my father was a petrol pump operator when he started his career and came with Rs. 500 from Yemen, Aden.” And then, despite his estranged relationship with his brother in profession, Anil makes it a point that he does not let this strain get the best of him when it comes to family gatherings and functions. The way the entire Ambani family got together to commemorate Dhirubhai Ambani’s 80th birth anniversary after being at odds with one another, the sight looked like just another family making merry. It was not an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ situation. They appeared at ease, eating and praying together, and in a scene unimaginable not so long ago, even dancing with each other at the local temple.
