Since 2019, Sasmita has been working on the Timur Merah Project series, which reflects the Kamasan Balinese painterly language that she has been developing in her practice. It represents a geography of female figures, fires, and various natural elements, composed whimsically in an unfolding of pansexual energy. While rooted in mythological thinking with Hindu and Balinese-specific references, the scenes are equally part of the contemporary process of imagining a secular and empowered mythology for a post-patriarchal future. Busui Ajaw is a self-taught painter who creates works that draw from her everyday experiences as a woman in the contemporary world as well as her roots as part of the Akha ethnic minority in Chiang Rai. Since she began drawing at age 15, she has developed an expressive painterly language to communicate both the seen and unseen as well as the material and the psychological. . Born in a remote mountainous region of Myanmar, the artist was forced to flee as a young child with her family after a military invasion. Her practice relates to her unique upbringing. The artist is an Akha, a nomadic ethnic group from the highlands of mainland Southeast Asia and is from a family of artisans. Coming from an oral culture, the practice of image-making was initially foreign to her. She recently began to incorporate wooden sculpture into her visual language as well as working with installations. She received her B.Arch from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, M.S.AAD. from Columbia University, New York, and Ph.D. in Architecture History from The University of Tokyo. She was a faculty member of the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University (2002 – 2022). In 2009, she co-founded all(zone) in Bangkok. Rachaporn regularly gives lectures and teaches internationally. In Fall 2022, she was appointed as Louis I. Kahn Assistant Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Architecture. . all(zone) is a group of design professionals who are fascinated by the ever-changing mega-metropolises that give form to their everyday lives. Their observations are always captured by contemporary vernacular design solutions, facilitating the creation of built environments in which all can feel ‘at home’ in the world. .
