Race and Media with Social Media
Growing up I used to love History, mainly because I loved the idea of learning from the past. I also still to this day love film as it so eloquently captures the stories of our previous generations and expands our knowledge and aspires us to be like the greats of the past. Martin Luther King Jr., with his incredibly moving speech about being treated as equals, WWII as well as the other genocides that shook us to the core as children as to how one group of people can have so much hatred against an other. Or how about the French Revolution? The French fighting the French rather than standing united together, like that makes any sense. All these instances along with the heroes or heartbreaking stories of survivors we know so well and then see where we are now, it is hard to fathom that we continue to make similar mistakes. I always hoped growing up we would live in a time where we would no longer judge by the color of each other's skin, the gender that each individual identified as, or their political or religious beliefs but as I grow I realize that there is a still an ongoing battle between love and hate. With this past Presidential Election we have seen more riots, more tears, more aggression, more hate, and more division than I ever hoped for in life however it is the women's march, the protesting, the compassion, and the positivity that is being shown in every aspect of the masses including social media that we need to capitalize on. While many people feel as though their voices are not important, it is important to know that in the time we live in, we have an incredible opportunity to be heard from the amount of platforms that we can speak through. Just as much negativity through the internet we can do our best to spread awareness and love. After all, this week we learned a tremendous amount about how just one hashtag that was important to one writer became a widespread movement. Black Twitter, Latino Twitter, anything that you are passionate about should be written and shared. You never know who you can lift up or shed light upon.

As this article explains, there is a lot to look forward to in 2017. There is a lot of change going on in the largest mass media of the Internet as well as in television, and film. It is an incredibly important time to spread love and acceptance of one another in a time where a lot of what is going on in our nation is trying to create a division and go backwards in what is American, what is mainstream, and what is the norm.
