14. (Jan 27-28) Flinching / Breakdown / Sleep Deprivation

“You’re slower than usual,” Hero teased when they pinned Villain to the wall. “Lost your edge after that little vacation you took?”
Villain was breathing heavily. Their hands grasped at Hero’s, which were fisted in the front of their suit, but Villain lacked their typical strength. “Wasn’t a vacation, you jerk,” they huffed. “And I’m doing my best here.”
Hero pulled one of their hands back, and their heart jumped when Villain flinched away from them; they’d never reacted like that before. The instinctual fear was clearly visible in their eyes.
“Whoa, hey,” Hero said softly. “I was just gonna—your mask is slipping.”
Villain looked down, frowning. “Sorry. I just...go ahead.”
Hero raised their hands slowly and adjusted Villain’s mask, noting the sharp intake of breath when Hero’s fingers grazed their cheek. As they put it back in place, Hero could see a dark bruise hiding under the mask. The slightest bit of purple spread up their cheekbone.
Villain was trembling when Hero stepped back.
“Are you okay?” Hero asked. Logically, they knew they should take advantage of Villain’s weakness and bring them in. But they just couldn’t bring themself to be that cruel.
“When I was gone this week,” Villain whispered, “I was...Supervillain took me hostage. I’ll spare you the details but...they did some shit to me I wouldn’t even do to my enemies.”
Hero felt their heart ache at the admission and the pained expression in Villain’s eyes when they looked back up. “I’m sorry, I—I had no idea.”
“Not your fault,” Villain said with a shrug. They tried to force a smile as well, but it didn’t quite work. “But it messed me up pretty good. I can’t sleep. I can’t move without remembering their hands on me.”
A sick feeling curled in Hero’s stomach as they imagined what the normally collected Villain must have been through to have them on the verge of tears at the memory. They slowly reached out, giving Villain enough time to stop them—but when they didn’t, Hero pulled them into an embrace. “It’s over,” they muttered into Villain’s hair. “You're safe now.”
Their words seemed to open the floodgates, and suddenly Villain broke down. Hero didn’t know what to do, so they just held their nemesis as they cried. The fact that they’d been in the middle of a fight passed through Hero’s mind, but it didn’t matter now. They were a hero—their job was to help people. Even if those people regularly made their life hell.
“I’m sorry,” Villain choked out. “This is pathetic. And I—I deserved it.”
“No one deserves to be hurt like that,” Hero said, rubbing their back in soothing circles.
Villain tried to steady their breathing as they looked up at Hero, eyes glistening with tears. “Thank you. Just—give me a minute, and we can get back to it.”
“What do you say we get a rain check,” Hero asked with a small smile, “and you let me buy you a coffee instead?”
Villain sniffled and rolled their eyes. “As long as you promise to reschedule. Because I was looking forward to kicking your ass.”
Hero laughed. “Okay, deal.”
Although the coffee may not have truly fixed anything, it was a welcomed comfort.

Villain checked the time on their watch; a minute to midnight. It was almost time to set their plan in motion. They were skulking outside the house of a wealthy civilian, waiting for the opportunity to break in and kidnap them. Villain had carefully turned off all of the alarms and CCTV cameras on the property, running over the building’s floor plan all the while. It had struck them as odd that a place as full of valuables as this only had one camera and one alarm, but they had to admit it made their job easier. That was the thing with civilians – they were either scared to death that they would be robbed of their worldly possessions and put their security up to the max, or, like this person, they were cocky and thought no one would dare try to break into their home. Villain grinned wide as the clock struck midnight. Time to go.
They slipped in through a large sash window once they had carefully worked the latch open, then began making their way down the first of a series of ornately decorated corridors. The carpet was a rich red colour, oak panelling stretched all along both walls and occasionally there was a decorative table housing some priceless piece of history. Villain didn’t take much time to look at any of it.
They had been watching Civilian for a while now, planning out their daily routine, deciding where they would be at which time and what they would be doing. Civilian was a part time ‘politician’, as far as Villain could tell. They spent most of their time at home, but when they were out, it was usually because they were discussing business affairs with the mayor. Mayor was the real target of this operation, given that it was them Villain wanted to rob. It wasn’t as easy as just breaking and entering when it came to them; there was around the clock security to deal with, umpteen cameras and silent alarm systems. Villain knew, because they’d already tried. Capturing someone close to the mayor and holding them hostage was a backup plan.
The further Villain crept through the house, the more they began to wonder if they should give up on the kidnapping and just rob Civilian. The entire place was dripping in wealth, though Civilian was still quite young given the vast riches in their possession. It must be family money, villain thought as they passed a series of priceless mounted portraits on their right. Either that or they got lucky. Villain froze to the spot, a faint nose catching their attention. By rights, Civilian should only be a few rooms over, so maybe they had just moved something. An antique book, perhaps, one of a massive collection housed in the library in which Villain was expecting them to be. Maybe they could lift a few books on their way out.
Villain could hardly believe their luck when they got to the right room. The door had been left ajar, just wide enough that they could slip through unnoticed. Civilian was standing with their back turned, leaning forwards and perusing a bookshelf with avid interest. They would never see it coming. Villain tiptoed their way across the room, silently drawing a chemical-soaked cloth from their pocket and raising their hand in front of them, preparing to press it over Civilian’s mouth. They were almost within touching distance, and then –
Villain frowned. Their hand had just stopped. Mid-air, like it had been frozen in place. They tugged backwards, but their hand wouldn’t budge. Neither would their arm. Villain could feel panic starting to rise in their chest as they tried to take a step backwards and found their legs wouldn’t comply. Their body trembled with the effort of trying to move, but their muscles just wouldn’t listen. Villain could feel adrenaline starting to slide through their veins, their heartbeat sounding in their ears. Then, they heard a low, confident chuckle. Coming from Civilian.
Villain directed their eyes forwards to look at the person in front of them, who was now slowly turning around. They had just one finger raised a fraction of an inch, a malicious glint in their eyes a grin that rivalled Villain’s own.
“Well hello, darling,” came their voice, honey smooth and full of vicious enjoyment. It was a voice Villain hadn’t heard for years, not since they had first been starting out. but surely, it couldn’t be… The owner of that voice had disappeared without a trace years ago, never to be seen or heard from again. Unless –
“Have you worked it out yet, sweetheart? I’d be disappointed if you hadn’t.” Supervillain. It was a cruel smile that stretched their lips as they stepped forward, giving a low hum of amusement. “Nothing to say? Why, surely you should at least be trying to do something by now. Are your powers not telekinetic? Do you have to move to be able to use them?” Villain visibly gulped.
“I’m – I’m not powered,” they whispered, surprised they were even able to move their lips to form the words. Supervillain’s mask broke for a moment, their eyebrows raising slightly in what seemed like genuine surprise before they leaned their head back and let out a disbelieving laugh.
“You actually thought you’d be able to kidnap me?” They said, still laughing in disbelief. “And you’re not even powered?” They let out another guffaw, dropping the hand which held Villain in place even at arm’s length. Only Villain still couldn’t move.
“How…”
“Sweetheart, please. You were so astounded that I could control you by just raising a finger – you can’t blame me for playing with you just a little bit.” A horrible nausea started rising in the back of Villain’s throat.
“Everyone thinks you’re dead.” A smirk this time, and an amused huff.
“Do they think that? Or do you all say it to one another just to make yourselves feel safer, lest there be a repeat of Slate Bridge.” Villain almost wanted to close their eyes at the memory. So many had died, so much razed to the ground – and for what? Villainy was one thing, kidnapping, stealing and even the occasional murder. But that? That had just been carnage. Purely for the twisted enjoyment of the brilliant mind stood before them. “Do try not to pass out on me. I know I’m a terrifying sight to behold but you unconscious is really just going to make my night a lot more complicated than it needs to be.”
“What are you going to do with me?” Supervillain leaned forwards into Villain’s space, eyes glinting in the warm light emitting from a nearby lamp.
“You sound scared. You should have thought about that before you broke into my house.” Without so much as lifting a hand, Supervillain levitated Villain off the ground and began striding down the hallway outside the library, Villain’s limp body following helplessly behind. “You won’t be telling anyone who I am, Villain, that’s for sure.”

If you have been following the Genshin Impact (Genshin) news lately, you would have more or less heard about the Chinese players instantly unfollowing Genshin in all of their socials, including the companies that has collaborated with Hoyoverse.
I know there are a lot of people talking about it and you'd be wondering, "is this going to be another one of those posts?"
Truthfully, I don't know because I don't really plan what I write here... The most I do is just go back and read from the top to make sure I am making sense, not unintentionally offending anybody, and editing parts that needs to be edited.
So, just humour me and join me on this wild ride, yeah?

First off, for the benefit of those who are blissfully unaware of what is going on, Hoyoverse announced in their 4.4 Special Programme that they are giving away three intertwined fates and some other stuff to players for all of their support for the past three years.
I know that line is going to piss some people off already like, three? THREE? HONKAI STAR RAIL GETS A F***ING 5 STAR CHARACTER FOR FREE AND WE ONLY GET 3 INTERTWINED FATES??

So, yeah, that is technically what people were mad about because the rewards, in Hoyoverse fashion, were stingy.
Honestly, I can understand why they decided to give three intertwined fates because, as they said, it is for the past THREE years players have been supporting the game. Seeing the link?
But of course, it is also considered injustice to, not only the players, but also the game itself.
Like I mentioned earlier, Honkai Star Rail (HSR) has a free 5-star character... not just any 5-star character, a FEATURED 5-star character... being sent out to all HSR players through the in-game mail system.
In case some of you are not HSR players and are also blissfully unaware of the significance of this terrible news, it is just like Hoyoverse giving out a free Zhongli to all Genshin players on the first year of the game's release.
Many Genshin veterans here can tell you that Genshin has never received a free featured 5-star character in the first two years of the game's release. The free characters that we keep getting are all 4-stars, and most of the time, we already have them at C6 from our attempts to get the featured 5-star banners.
Before I go any further, what I just mentioned is only part of the reason why players are so mad at Hoyoverse.
The other reason to why all of this big hoohaa is simply because of the way the message was conveyed.
I missed the Special Programme and wasn't aware of how bad it was until a Content Creator in TikTok covered this. I was aware of players unfollowing Genshin on the socials but not what the TikToker covered.
Basically, it was the way the appreciation message was delivered. At first, I thought people were just exaggerating. Just before I started writing this post, I went to search for the Special Programme and watched it.
I stand corrected.

It is just like the TIkToker said in his video. There is a difference when saying "😭❤️I appreciate you guys❤️😭" and "😐I appreciate you guys😐".
Of course, we all would like to have the first one, but unfortunately, the young announcer was more towards the second one.
For the record, I don't blame him. He could have been tired, or had a bad day, and it is totally fine. I think what really pisses players off is, truthfully, the timing of everything.
This is where I get back to my previous point earlier. HSR gave out a free featured 5-star character within its first year release, and Genshin is giving out only three intertwined fates, along with some other things, as an appreciation gift for the three years support.
It is time to make a statement here, people.
Hoyoverse, it is not about the way the message was delivered. It is about the blatant favoritism you are showing through your games. We all get that Honkai Impact 3rd was the game that pulled you guys to the top and it is perfectly fine if that game has a special place in everybody's hearts in the Hoyoverse company. But it is not right to do things like this.
I'd rather Hoyoverse take back the 5-star character in HSR to make it fair across all games. To be honest, if Hoyoverse doesn't start to treat Genshin with more respect it deserves, the game is essentially going to lose a lot of players.
I have said my piece. I know Hoyoverse is never going to look at this but I really hope that they realise that what they are doing to the non-Honkai games is really creating animosity between themselves and the player-base.
Alright, so, congrats to those of you making it this far down here. I honestly think that I may have lost some of you guys half-way through the posts because it's technically the same as what everybody else is saying.
