The Joys to the world. A nicely decorated Christmas dinner table with red napkins adorning gold platters, providing nice contrast.

The poster for Flashback, a mystery thriller film. The main image in the centre of the poster is the two main stars neatly framed by a keyhole. The keyhole however is upside down, which coincides with the phrase “In the Blink of an Eye your life can turn upside down”. The major actors are credited at the top of the poster, and the typography for “Flashback” appears to be fading to black slowly, helping it stand out in the poster.

The poster for Midsommar, a folk horror film. No actors are credited in this poster, instead the director, Ari Aster, gets sole credit here. it also lists his previous work of the same genre. The image is at the top of the hierarchy with bright and summery colours. But this is a horror movie, and you see the actresses upset face, and the saturated colour palette takes on the eeriness of hyperreality. We also only see half of her face, which may suggest that we don’t have the full picture of events, and don’t know what is really going on first viewing.

The film poster for Gothika, a supernatural horror film starring Halle Berry. The typography for the word “Gothika” has a mysterious glow about it when compared to the rest of the typography. It also looks like poor hand writing, possibly written free hand on a window or mirror. The main actress in the poster looks to be trapped behind a rain covered window, and the blue hue of the poster makes her look like a ghost, or on another plane of existence.

Movie poster for “The Lighthouse”, whose genre can be described as a horror film, a psychological thriller, a survival film, and a character study. The main actors and director are credited in the poster, and the title, while quite minimalistic, uses larger font to help it stand out slightly. The main image of the eye is at the top of the hierarchy, with its milky white sclera almost jumping out of the poster. The eye also seems to bear resemblance to a seagulls head.

Louis Prima and his Orchestra. Colour is being used to great effect here to help frame the poster. Blue is used only in the header for the important details of venue, time and date. The words “Be Happy” are aligned in a rainbow arc, inspiring joy. The typography used for “Louis Prima” appears to elongate and warp the further it travels down the poster helping it really catch your attention.

Cab Calloway and his Cotton Club Orchestra. The poster uses a skewed alignment and bold dark typography in it’s main frame. The poster also uses colour to create a frame that hugs the words “ Cab Calloway and his Cotton Club Orchestra”; Cab Calloway is at the top of the hierarchy with its big bold typography.

Bessie Smith and the St. Louis Blues. Excellent use of Typography is in use here, with St. Louis Blues  at the top of the Hierarchy. Colour is cleverly implemented to resemble the appearance of the entertainer standing beneath a spotlight.

Count Basie and his Orchestra, playing at sweet’s Ballroom. The poster makes great use of stark colours, contrast, and typography to compose an eye catching Jazz poster. Count Basie in big bold black letters on a red background stands at the top of the hierarchy in the main frame, while sweet’s ballroom stands out from the rest in the Header of the poster.
