what is #landback?
i’m seeing a lot of people struggle to explain what it means concisely, but 1) i don’t think you can and 2) if you take the time to look into movements and legal battles various native americans have been working on for a long time it’s all already out there, yknow? so let’s try to dissect that.
landback is a catchy slogan for the work native americans have already been doing and the goals they’ve already had for decades and decades including:
land sovereignty
fishing rights
hunting rights
improving reservation conditions
attempting to correct treaty violations
furthering conservation & environmental protection
and many more !
with some more modern ideals like actively pushing for the US government to cede the entirety of the stolen landmass back to appropriate tribes thrown in (this does not mean evicting white people back to europe). this was already a concept in native political struggle, it’s just being pushed to the forefront more as conditions in america lead to more openly progressive ideals. this is pretty common with a lot of left-wing politics since we’re tired of watching centrism and ‘slow progress’ fail us
a decent primer if you care to learn more (just reading a post on tumblr isn’t gonna do it!) is looking into various movements like the American Indian Movement, the demands and underlying principles beneath the alcatraz occupation, etc all the way up through history to the ideals behind NoDAPL. don’t stick to just one resistance group or just one era in time since there’s a LOT of us with different cultures and different needs but it is not very difficult to find decent summations as long as you’re searching for native-written material & recognize that no one author is an imperfect authority. books are long. some of it may be good and some of it may be bad and you just have to parse which is which. take what works, leave what doesn’t, etc.
i recommend picking a particular thing you’re interested in (environmentalism, perhaps? religious rights? treaties?) and looking into political books and articles on the subject written by native authors and academics. oftentimes due to the way all of our issues are interconnected, you’ll hear a bit about everything. i know a lot of people say ‘just do your research!’ but don’t give any direction, so this should be a decent start for you. the same principles can be applied to learning more about any form of politics.
all this is to say, the general use of the term #landback is just a slogan that applies to the most modern iteration of a struggle that’s been happening since colonists first landed. you won’t be able to understand it by reading a single post on it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t understand it. a lot of natives will say they understand what it means through their lived experiences, but you can gain similar knowledge through some old fashioned political research.
there is a more public/pointed campaign @ landback dot org with a written manifesto, but the slogan ‘landback’ itself can be a bit more nebulous in common usage, as slogan-y words often are, which is what i’m trying to cover here. it is still very good to read if you like! i think the end is most useful to anyone who isn’t native american and wants to try to understand the fundamentals before continuing into further research:

I'm begging other trans people to read an ounce of Black Feminist or Decolonialist Feminist writing. I'm on my hands and knees and begging you. I promise you, I promise you, there is so much more to Feminist theory than anything you have picked up from White/Radical/Pop/Liberal Feminism I promise you. Read There Is No Hierarchy Of Oppressions By Audre Lorde. I have a link to the PDF right here you can read it for free. Take my hand I can't do this alone (thanks glass beach). Peace And Love On Planet Earth.

The older I get the more I admire people who are earnestly, genuinely into whatever their thing is. I know it sounds like an annoying cliche but unless you're being cruel or hurtful there is really no need to be normal about things. The dude with the bad fake accent at the renaissance faire is having the time of his life. The people having photoshoots with their fashion dolls are loving it. The old lady with a yard unreasonably full of tacky ass lawn ornaments is having a blast, HOA be damned.
Don't waste your time being too cool to have fun, y'know?

I think I should post this outside of a wall of text.
There's a lot of new data suggesting that long covid is a brain injury on top of it doing tons of long lasting damage on your immune system respiratory system, and heart making you more susceptible to things like cancer, memory issues, heart attacks, and who knows what else.
PLEASE inform your friends, get vaccinated, and wear an N95 mask. Cloth masks do not cut it anymore. Cloth masks project others and work best when everyone wears them, but they offer next to no protection for the person wearing it.
N95 masks are disposable, but as long they're not noticeably wet (sneezing, rain, etc) you can safely store them for a week in an air tight container (I have 7 ziploc bags labeled for each day of the week) and re-use them. I've never gotten covid and can tell you (anecdotally*) that this works.

oh i don't know what young adult needs to hear this but you should google what day your 10,000th day will be & set a reminder in your calendar. it happens somewhere in your 27th year. i was really bummed when i googled my own and found out i had missed it by like 2 months.
(if you missed yours too, no worries, we both get another chance to celebrate 15,000 at 41. Unfortunately you will be 54 years old before you are 20,000 days old, at which point we will have overthrown the concept of linear time anyway)
life is very cute, and you have struggled a very long time to be here, and i love you. sometimes i think we need to invent our reasons for celebration. maybe today you are 10,345 days old. or 12,345. or 8,435. maybe u should just celebrate because it is a weekday, and those are hard days. i love u , light a candle and blow it out. i'm proud of you for staying.

I work in elder care as a social worker and the sheer number of people on this 'leftist' site that called prince Andrew a 'skeleton' and a 'mummy' and made memes about how 'ugly' and 'disgusting' he looked made me ILL. They weren't mocking him for being a billionaire dipshit. They instead made fun of a sick old man for looking like a sick old man. Most vindictive block spree I've gone on since the days of ace discourse.
Sadly, it is deeply ingrained in our society to ascribe looks and health to morality. It's a narrative many of us have been fed from birth and don't even recognize as an issue until someone points it out. And even then, some people remain resistant to the idea that it's an issue at all because they don't like to think they've been doing something wrong. Which is understandable. No one likes to feel like they're a bad person.
And they're not.
They just need to unpack some damage and realize that health and physical appearance are morally neutral things. I know my relationship with my own mental health and other disabilities got a lot better when I started making a conscious effort to decouple them.
By all means, criticize people for their actions. Hold them accountable for their deeds. But you can do that without perpetuating what is often ableist, classist, racist (etc.) values in the process.

I’ve seen this GFM be endorsed by multiple Palestinians on Instagram - it is to help two craftspeople and their families to escape Gaza into Egypt. They had initially denied requests from people to offer money as it felt useless in the situation, but two are now looking to evacuate. Preserving traditional Palestinian crafts in the face of genocide is vital, but I’ll let the description of the fundraiser explain better than I could.
