Sam smiled softly at the description of the cat -obviously hearing the correction she made when talking about how she got the cat in the first place- and thought the man immediately understood that there was more of that story, possibly a reason why she was in the city, he figured that was a conversation for another time. “Cats are great company. If it wasn’t for work I would have adopted a pet by now. But since I have a yard, I figure it’s a great place for a dog who wants a home and to leave the nearest shelter,” said the man. He’d be lying if he said stopping by an adoption center to look at the pups hadn’t crossed his mind -or his Saturday evening. “It can be a bit too much, specially on rush hour. But the weekends is usually a time where things are enjoyable, if you don’t mind a crowd. The farmers market’s has great spots to eat as well. All local,” he said with a nod. “Almost all my life. My parents moved to the city when I was a little kid and it’s been the big apple ever since.”
Tumblr media
“I’d love a dog if I had the space for sure, a good medium to big sized one. Maybe a golden retriever?” she thought aloud. A yard sounded nice. They had a small one in Connecticut but it wasn’t large enough for something to run around. “Well, if you’re free this coming Saturday and don’t mind playing tour guide I think a morning exploring sounds like a lot of fun.” Molly was a bit surprised at herself for offering the plans. Roger was the plan maker between the two of them, Molly just fine tuned everything, so it was a big of a reach for her to suggest it, especially with someone she just met. But Sam seemed nice enough, and she’d love any opportunity to get to know new friends. “Especially by someone familiar with the city..” she added before bringing her wine to her lips for another sip. “Have you ever thought about moving somewhere else or is it difficult to picture yourself anywhere but here?” She couldn’t help but find herself curious.

“That’s the real building that was used in the show Friends, right?” Molly said aloud to herself as she snapped a picture of it from across the street. “Oh my gosh, I feel like such a dork when I do this, act all touristy in the city and share my day on instagram..” She looked down at her phone as she posted the photo on her story, “Please tell me if I’m getting too annoying and I will stop in a heartbeat.”

A smile spread across Harlow’s face when she spotted Molly walking in. “It’s good to see you too! You definitely didn’t interrupt anything. My kids are with my ex tonight, so I was just going to curl up in bed and find something to binge on Netflix until I fell asleep. So, if anything, you saved me from an uninteresting night at home. Which is why the first round is on me.” She gently pushed Molly’s drink across the table towards her. “Tell me about it! It’s been one hell of a day, and this is the perfect remedy for that. So, here’s to ridding ourselves of not so great days.” Harlow tilted her glass towards Molly to cheers before taking a sip. “You want to talk about your day? Or was it one of those ones that’s better not shared?”
Tumblr media
“I’m very glad to hear it,” Molly replied as she sat. She still couldn’t believe that Harlow had kids, she hardly looked old enough. Molly didn’t know much about her kids yet as she hadn’t asked, but they had to be super young. Though Molly had no kids, she found comfort in knowing Harlow was a fellow young divorcee. “Though I’m sure sometimes you cherish those nights in alone to yourself so please don’t let me snatch those away from you when you really need them.” she explained with a nod, reaching for her drink. “And definitely, to ridding ourselves of the day,” Molly rose her drink slowly to match Harlow’s before taking a sip. “It was not necessarily bad, it was just busy and long, and we had some interesting patrons hanging around today and had to call security which was a little nerve-wracking.” she said before taking another sip of her drink. “Coming from a small library system into I think the biggest system in the nation is a bigger shock than I thought it’d be.” a chuckle followed and then her gaze settled on Harlow’s once again. “What about your day? Is that a better left unsaid situation or do you need to unload, too?”

“That place is perfect! I’ll see you there!” Harlow typed back quickly before hitting send. It was nice to have a new friend in the city, and the way that they had met was definitely a good story to tell. Harlow hoped she could aid Molly in getting familiar with the city that she had called home for a number of years now. Putting her phone down, she worked quickly to get herself ready to go out again, changing her clothes and fixing up her hair a little, removing any sign of the day she’d had. Once she was satisfied with her appearance, Harlow let Molly know she was on her way and she left the house. Making her way to the agreed upon place, Harlow seemed to arrive before Molly and ordered them a round of drinks, the same that they’d had on the night that they’d met, while she waited for the older woman to arrive.
Tumblr media
Molly took one last look at herself in the mirror by her door before grabbing her purse and heading out. She was excited to see Harlow again. Though they hadn’t spent much time together, the little time they had was fun and Harlow seemed to be knowledgeable about the city and truthfully Molly really did need a few friends who knew their way around. One because she wanted to learn her new home city but also because she did work at a library and she was likely to encounter patrons who wanted to know more about local places and though Molly was new and could use that excuse, she wanted to learn a few local tips sooner than later. A smile settled across her lips when she walked in to find Harlow seated and ready with their drink order, and by the looks of it she hadn’t been waiting long. The brunette greeted her new friend, “It’s so good to see you again, Harlow! I hope I didn’t interrupt any evening plans, I was in serious need of a drink after work today and it felt a little sad going for one alone..” she said as she settled herself.

“And that’s fine. I needed a fresh start, and a house with space seemed like the best option at the time. I just need to stop at an adoption center and get two pups to seal the deal,” said Sam with a chuckle. Not like the thought hadn’t crossed his mind before, but after Sundays became lonelier more often, the company of a furry friend seemed like a good idea. “What type of cat? I always find a funny video of a cat,” said the man with a chuckle. “Well. I know the city pretty well. I can show you around, if you want of course. The Farmer’s Market is a great place to start, if you’re into cooking you get a lot of great produce for the week,” said Sam with a nod.
Tumblr media
“She’s an orange tabby, and she’s polydactyl - she has six toes. Her feet look like little mittens and it’s my favorite thing ever. My mom rescued her a few years ago but knew she couldn’t keep her so she gave her to us,” she stumbled over her words, “Um, me.” she corrected. Molly had gotten better about leaving Richard out of things but occasionally she’d find herself referring to herself as a part of an us and it was incredibly annoying. “She’s a funny cat. Her favorite thing to do now is sit on the back of the couch and watch the birds on our little patio. She chirps at them.” Beatrix was definitely good company. And she found herself smiling at the offer to show her around the city, “Oh, well, I love a good farmer’s market.” she shrugged, “I can’t say no to that. And it’d be useful to have a friend who knows their way around. I’ve traveled her on vacation before but I’m still getting used to it all. Everything is so fast here, it’s overwhelming. How long have you lived here?”

Harlow had just returned home from a day full of meetings, and despite the long day, she was still pretty wired. Whether that was due to her brain going over everything that had been spoken about during the day, or the six, no, seven coffees that she’d consumed since lunch time, was still up in the air. After dumping her bag down on the bed in the room that she was staying in at Hazel’s, Harlow took off her heels and jacket before hearing her phone buzz. Moving over to dig through her bag to find the device, a smile spread across her face at the sight of Molly’s name on the screen. She was still grateful to the older woman for helping her out the other night, and she’d genuinely enjoyed her company. She’d had every intention of reaching out sooner, but in the days since they’d met, Harlow had been so busy that she just hadn’t found the time. Tapping the screen to open the message, she read it and typed back a quick reply. “Hey! It’s like you read my mind, I’m in desperate need of a drink and couldn’t think of anyone better to get one with. Name the time and place and I’ll meet you there!”
Tumblr media
Molly’s smile lit up as she saw Harlow’s name pop up on her screen, agreeing to the drink. “Perfect!” she replied before adding the place she was headed, “I hope this spot’s okay but if you have a better suggestion I’m all ears. I’m still learning the lay of the land.” She closed her phone and proceeded to finish getting ready. It didn’t take much and before long she was heading out the door, letting Harlow she was on the way. The brunette was excited to finally start hanging out with more people her own age, or at least closer to her own age. She loved her older coworkers but it definitely wasn’t the same, especially when she had been so used to having a constant companion.

“I do have a yard. The perks of living in Staten Island despite what everyone says about it. Sure, it’s not Manhattan but we get a house that’s actually livable rather than a 3x3 studio apartment that I swear it’s more like a shoe box,” said Sam with a soft chuckle. The man himself had lived in one of those apartments -not one so tiny but big enough to be comfortable for two people- when he was married. When grief was too heavy of a burden, the man didn’t think twice and left the city to a place where he could have a home that didn’t feel suffocating in memories and the past, “I’m just missing the dog and grill I guess.” At her questions, he nodded, “Yeah. I’m a cop,” not really a police officer, but people didn’t exactly took the phrase fbi agent that easy. “I work here in the city, even though I live across the river.”
Tumblr media
Molly laughed, “My tiny apartment is definitely more like a shoebox..” she nodded, thinking about the little space she’s been able to create on her own for the first time in over a decade. The feelings were incredibly bittersweet. But she moved her gaze back to Sam, smiling at the mention of a dog. “I’ve got a cat, Beatrix. She’s my best friend.” Molly chuckled. That probably wasn’t something you said to someone you were trying to connect with. Normal people had human best friends, or at least dog best friends. People with cat best friends were weird. “But that sounds nice, I haven’t ventured over to Staten Island yet, I haven’t really explored much of the city beyond work and a few places around my apartment. It’s surprisingly difficult to do that when you’re by yourself with no friends in a new city...” At least for Molly it was.

Molly wasn’t sure why she had been so anxious to actually follow through and reach out to new friends but here she was, pacing around her room in her tiny apartment wondering how she should reach out to Harlow. The woman was a few years younger than her but that didn’t really seem to matter, or Molly hadn’t noticed if it had. She had a great time. All they had really done was chat casually but Molly hadn’t seen any red flags or reason to not reach out for another hangout. In fact, Harlow had made Molly feel a few years younger. Thirty-six wasn’t that old but being a thirty-six year old divorcee seemed to make one feel ten years older. It was isolating. Finally, the brunette took a breath and typed out a text to Harlow on her phone, “Hey! It’s Molly, from the bar the other night. I meant to message earlier but forgot” That definitely wasn’t true but it was what you were supposed to say, right? She hadn’t forgotten. “I thought about heading out for a drink tonight and wondered if you wanted to join? If not it’s totally fine, we can reschedule! I just wanted to extend the invite.” And with that she waited, already half ready to go because she had nothing else to do.

“People always say that movies based on books miss many details, so I guess that’s understandable,” said Sam with a soft nod, a hint of a smile appearing. Granted, the man had never read the book, and had maybe once seen the movie with his wife when it premiered at one mall; not really able to say that he could say much about it. “I don’t see anything bad with reading in a bar. Places like this aren’t my bread and butter either. I’d much rather be at my home while and enjoy this beer in my backyard, since it’s getting warmer,” said Sam with a chuckle. “But my partner has been bugging me so much about staying in so much lately that I just conceded so she would stop bothering me.”
Tumblr media
“Mhm,” Molly nodded slowly in response to the comment about the movie and book retellings. Molly actually enjoyed most book to film adaptations, she had never been much of a real critic, in fact, she hated rating things because she just liked to read and watch movies. It was easy for her to separate the stories in her mind, most of the time anyway. She was slightly relieved, though, to hear she wasn’t totally lame for reading in the bar, and to hear that she wasn’t the only one who seemed out of her element. “Well, for the record, you’re doing quite well out on your own.” she said softly, taking a long sip of her wine. “But you have a yard?” she asked, “Oh,” she sighed, “I miss having a yard. Don’t get me wrong, my little balcony is so cute and cozy, but having the space on the ground level was so nice..” She couldn’t help but think back to the last yard she had, but that very quickly lead to thinking about her ex-husband and that wasn’t a hole she wanted to go down right now. instead she looked at Sam again, “Partner?” she repeated, and then immediately regretted it because she didn’t want to be weird. “For work?” she asked, knowing she was about to feel like a fool if he in fact meant a relationship-esque partner. Not that that mattered, she was just .. curious.

“I’m glad too. Going one day without a phone becomes too much a trouble,” said Sam with a chuckle, and in his line of work if his partner sent a text or call for help and he didn’t exactly answered back that only meant trouble. And trouble was the last he wanted at his age. “Is it the book the movie is based of?” asked the man curiously at the title, “No. I don’t think that. I think it’s nice that you do your thing, even in a bar. It’s a nice place. People should be able to read a book if they want.”
Tumblr media
“It really does, especially in a city,” Molly nodded in agreement. She couldn’t imagine being without hers, not right now. It was her lifeline connecting her with other people both at home and a few of the new ones she had met since moving to the city. “But yeah, it is. The book is of course, better.” she hated to be that person, but she couldn’t help it. She grinned, “It’s a sweet story.” and why she wanted to read such a sad story again on the heels of a divorce was beyond her. “But thanks. I don’t usually read in a bar. I mean I have before, but I don’t get out much. I just moved here and the only people I know right now are some high school kids who volunteer at my work or are my coworkers who are thirty years older than me and married with grown kids. I’m having a hard time relating,” she joked, “So I figured it was time for me to venture out into the world on my own.”

“Well, half my stories are classified, but I can tell you a couple fun ones. What kind of stories do you like, Molly?” Growing up in the family she did, Hazel was full of stories. “I could tell you about the one time my twin sister and I tried to switch places. Mind you we’re not identical. Or are you looking for how I ended up with the most adorable Frenchie in the world?” She took a sip of her beer, pulling out the other stool to take a seat.
Tumblr media
“Oh?” Amelia grinned before taking a sip of her drink. “Well, I tend to like most stories. I work in a library and I’m so cliché in that way.” It was true, too. Molly could sit and listen to any story, no matter how great it was, or wasn’t. She just loved hearing other humans share their experiences. “Twin sister shenanigans first but then I definitely want to hear about how you acquired the Frenchie.”

“What is it that you’re reading? It must be good if you can read in a place like this. It’s not exactly quiet in here, and honestly I’m surprised you aren’t getting swarmed just for sitting on your own.” Harlow motioned to the table that hosted only the two of them. This was her first attempt at going to a bar on her own, up until now, Harlow had stuck to coffee shops. Tonight was the first night that she’d had the energy to go out, and she could tell that next time it would be better to bring backup. “That sounds good to me, you’ve got yourself a deal, Molly.”
Tumblr media
“It’s PS I Love You” Molly replied, gesturing to the book. “One of my favorites, a comfort book that I can’t stop reading.” Since her divorce she found herself crawling back to her familiar favorite romance/rom-com-esque stories. And she nearly laughed as Harlow commented on being swarmed. “And other than a man who was too drunk to give me his correct name, you’re the first. I think I just look a little sad like this so people aren’t sure how to react.” she laughed. Her laugh was a little uneasy but that was alright. “This is one of the first nights I’ve been out in, well, in New York City, by myself, ever.” she had stuck to staying home over the last few weeks, not yet being able to drag herself out to meet her new city. And it was one of the first times she had been out completely by herself, as a single woman, in nearly ten years. “So meeting a new is very nice.” before she took a drink of her wine she brought it up to cheers the woman sitting across from her.

“I guess that makes sense. It’s fucked up, but it makes sense.” Stella had never been one to hold her tongue, but it was yet to get her into too much trouble. Somehow, despite her less than gentle approach to things, she’d managed to find a husband who could put up with it. And with nearly 11 years of marriage under her belt, she was pretty sure that her and Kennedy were in it for the long haul despite it. “You and me both, but apparently that means that we’re not cool anymore. I found out recently that it’s all the rage to get those overly sweet drinks covered in cream and all kinds of shit.” Crossing her arms over her chest, she shook her head. “New to the city, huh? I bet everyone is asking you if you’ve been to all the basic places, the ones all the movies feature that turn out to be incredibly disappointing. My advice, save the tourist traps for later down the track and seek out the places that next to no one knows about yet. Like, there’s this restaurant in Brooklyn, tiny little place, run by a family that’s had it for generations. They make the best pizza in the city, hands down.”
Tumblr media
“Oh I’ve seen those trends” Molly nodded, “And apparently some of the drinks they order aren’t even on the menu?” she said, “They’re on a secret menu and people only know about them because they go viral? Or something along those lines.” she sighed as she spoke. Molly couldn’t keep up. If someone didn’t tell her about it, she was out of the loop. But she smiled as the woman gave her a suggestion, something that wasn’t so ironically New York, but at the same time, was. “I have yet to try some real New York pizza, I’ll definitely have to check that out.” she said, “All I’ve done is gone to work and come home and I’ve ordered takeout twice from this little sandwich shop but I’ve gotten the same thing. Because that’s what I always do, but I’m trying to shake things up and try new things. So if you’ve got any other restaurant suggestions, definitely let me know.”

TASK 001: PLAYLIST
Molly’s been going through a fairly big life change with her divorce over the last few months and while she likes to think that moving to NYC has magically changed everything, it hasn’t. She’s still hurting but doing her best to start anew.
