“Death”

·Up to 90% of seabirds have plastic in their guts. Birds are eating ‘astronomical’ amount of marine debris they mistake for fish eggs. This leads to the seabirds’ death.

·Tens of thousands of individual animals from hundreds of marine species—including every kind of sea turtle and around half of marine mammals—have encountered plastic, glass, and other garbage in the ocean. Those rubbish damages their livings and the ecology, pushing them to death.

“Hurt”

·It is a sucker which was lodged in the turtle’s nasal cavity, reaching down into his throat, inhibiting his breathing and sense of smell—a turtle’s most important tool for finding food. It was no doubt messing with the turtle’s orientation and migration, and possibly even hindering his ability to find a mate.

·When the turtle was small, he drilled in the plastic. As he grew up, his turtle shell got distorted.

·The plastic is stuck by the neck of the seal.

Most marine animals are deeply impacted by plastic pollution.

statement

My topic is the first one which is about human and environment. This assignment work need went on element from my last work. My poster is about bad relationship between human and environment, human is influenced by the environment, suffering natural disaster every year. But the relationship between human and environment is mutual. People also make lots of damage and send it to the Earth as “gift”. My concept is inspired by this. After the birth of human, the Earth doesn't live peaceful life. After becoming aware of the benefits of obtaining resources from the Earth in damaging; and we do it to the Earth over and over again, never cherish it and consider the consequences of what we do. So the subject of my work is about the appearance when people damage the Earth.

After I confirm the subject, I find some artists who are devote themselves to appeal to the public to protect the environment. John Sabraw, the artist in toxic art, he uses his own pigments-bold yells and reds that are sourced from the oxidized sludge of abandoned coal mines and to create artwork. Instead of heavy metals color, the colorful and brightly show the seriousness of heavy metals pollution clearly. As for the another one artist, David Maisel, is a photographer from New York. One series of his photos is trying to use pollution as a way to spice up an empty photography. The pollution in his camera is full of sense of art, beautiful but shocking. Sum up these two artists, I’m inspired and determine my work finally.

My tentative plan is I make an imitated Earth and the original one is pure, as clean as new paper, and our human activities have color; once we damage the environment, there is one color cover the Earth. After several times, the Earth will be messy and dirty, represented the Earth is polluted badly. So I do some experiments to make sure my final work can display what I want.

The experiment 1 from weekly topic: uncreativity, which is about the color. I wonder in which way I can get dirty color. I tempted to use six different color to paint on six tracing paper and overlap these paper, then I find that it can't display result which is dirty color. So I think it is the wrong way which I display method. So I paint six color on one papers and that one is display the dark color. In a word, I must use different color on one substance so that all the color can mix together and collide to create new color.

The experiment 2 is from weekly topic: value. I want to make a fake Earth; I buy a ball with iron chain( made by light and unhurt materials ), and tempted to get effect which human is damaging the environment but can't get away from the Earth, imprisoned by the Earth. But the ball is too big and difficult to control, I decide to change the object which is smaller. I choose egg, make it empty, obtain the eggshell.

The experiment 3 is trying to make final work perfect. Sum up the results from last two experiments, I prepare an eggshell and six color. I pour the pigment one by one and wait pigment dry. But the result is different from it supposed to be. The color isn't obvious and undercoat which the color of eggshell is too deep and color is too light so it can't show clearly. So I try it again, making pigment heavier(I didn’t record in the video ); however, because of its heavy, pigment almost cover the last color. So the heavy color can't solve the problem. Later, I dye eggshell into white and the undercoat of eggshell is easy to coloring.

Experiment 2 - value

I want to make a fake Earth to be my work object, but this one is too big and unstable to paint. 

so I decide to give up this ball and choose eggshell to be the final work object.

Experiment 1 -uncreativity

I choose rainbow colour drawing on the tracing paper and trying to overlap these paper and want to get result which the six colour demonstrates black one. but it does’t show my ideal state. so i change the way to overlap the colour. 

so i find that if i want to get the color “black” which all the colour in one paper.

the related artist to my work is John Sabraw, and his toxic artworks are inspired me deeply. He uses brightly color to display the seriousness of heavy metals pollution. 

Assignment 2 - Research

My last assignment work is about the relationship between human and environment, and my work is about the one of worst things in the world, like disaster. For the this assignment, I want to continue the element of bad thing from the last one.

Since people appear in the earth, the damage to the earth is constantly. Human affect the environment, and make the earth “bruises” and people should take the consequence of what they do to the earth. 

Pollution, population explosion, ecosystem damage, ect, almost every influence does’t have good function, but after suffering these destroy thing, people still can’t live without the earth. So my assignment will display the process how human affect and damage the environment, and the relation between human and the environment.

Final post - 300 statement I choose the first topic which the question is about human and environment, so I want to do something about the relation between human and environment. Lately, I just finished reading a book ,written by unknown writers, called the Classic of Mountains and Rivers. This book is about the story of mythical beasts in the ancient China; almost every beasts has implied meaning, when they appear, they will bring the propitious or ill omen. So my concept is coming from the this book. I select one of the mythical beast which name is yu; it looks like owl, but it has human face，four eyes and two ears, its sound sounds like its name yu. When this mythical beast appears, there will be a drought in the world. From this story, I select some mythical elements like this beast and brought, and make it connect to the modern society. Once this beast appears, there will be a drought in the modern society. I use two paper to display my concept, the tracing paper is drew the mythical beast, yu; another one is collage, placing under the tracing paper is the situation which the drought is happened in modern times. I also use the mythical element from another story in the Classic of Mountains and Rivers, called Hou Yi she ri( Hou Yi shot down the sun). This story is started with ten suns in the sky. Displaying in artistic exaggeration, I paste three suns in the sky and on the bottom of the collage is the picture of drought. We all know human could influence environment, but the relation between human and environment is mutually influence, environment could influence human as well. This book displays ancient people are already utilizing weather or environment change to judge lucky or ill omen. The relation has been exist for thousand years, so I do this post again to show the relation between human and environments is mutually.
