ADAD assessment 3 final work+statement
youtube
Statement
People today have so many ways to receive information. They read news and information from different websites, news platforms and social media like Facebook and Twitter. This is an era of information explosion. However, not all information and news are accuracy and unbiased. Our attention may be shifted and changed by receiving inaccurate information.
Therefore, for my final work, I use a mask to present ourselves and make the mask transparent but it is totally dark outside the mask. It shows that one’s attention is limited. I put multiple scenes within the area of the mask to show information explosion. If you look carefully, in every scene, the real world and the reflection of the world is showing different scenes. This idea comes from my second experiment. There are might be another world inside the mirror/reflection. In my final work, this difference represents the truth and false of the information. After a few seconds, some scenes will be distracted by the light. For some people, they may just move their attention to another scene but for some people, they will still focus on the same scene. This is how truths being covered sometimes in reality. Although we still focus on it, we may not see it clearly now. By combining the sound of my sixth experiment, I want this sound work as a reminder or distractor. It depends on the person.  At the end, our mind may become messy because there is too many information. This is how information explosion act as a double-edged sword.
I have made some ‘big’ changes in the middle of the video when the lights distract the scenes one by one, but I think viewers may not notice it when they watch it at the first time. Two scenes has been swap twice during the video :)

Brainstorm
At the beginning, I really do not have many ideas about this final assessment, but I want to continue to explore my work in assessment 2. Hence, I tried to do many experiments about my topic perception and wanted to find out some creative ideas from these experiments.
For the first two experiments, they are my ideas for assessment 2. Both of these two experiments are trying to changing the ways or forms to perceive the world. What if human beings have compound eyes as same as some insects? What if human beings' vision is limited in a small area. It is interesting to know the answer to these questions. Thus, I developed these two ideas to my final work.
For the third and fourth experiments, my ideas are coming from the two artists’ works, Michaela Gleave’s ‘Our Frozen Movement’ (2012) and  Ori Gersht’s works ‘Big Bang’ and  ‘Pomegranate’. Instead of changing the ways of perception, this time I tried to change the angle of perception. Hence, I wanted to see a process in slow motion and to see a video with different effects. These two experiments are successful. However, I didn’t use these ideas for my final work. For next time, I may combine the ideas of first three experiments so my work may look like a scientific documentary by putting many interesting processes in slow motion under the lens of a microscope.
For the fifth and sixth experiment, my ideas come from the interesting moonwalking bear awareness test. Human beings’ vision is very limited sometimes because when we focus on something completely, we may not notice some large changes around us. However, I made another kind of ‘awareness test’ to show how people sometimes can be distracted by other things easily. One is for vision and another one is for hearing. I have applied this idea to my final work.

For the sixth experiment, I tried to play with sound. I use the ticking sound of the clocks and the sound of the pronunciation of the word ‘focus’ to make my background ‘music’. I use the ticking sound because it is the sound which we usually ignore when we focus on something. It is interesting that when we pay attention to the ticking sound of a clock, it actually will become very loud. For the use of the human sound of the word ‘focus’, it likes a reminder for us to keep focusing but actually it will disturb our attention.

For the fifth assessment, my idea is coming from the awareness test Moonwalking Bear.
youtube
I think this is a very interesting experiment which shows that many people cannot focus on more than two things at the same time. One’s awareness is limited. Hence, I tried to do a similar experiment. I used lights which move them in different directions and ways.  For one of the light, I tried to turn if off and on repeatedly when it moved. After doing this video, I think it is difficult to know the number of lights used in this experiment because when I tried to pay attention to one light, I will be disturbed by the movement of other lights.
youtube
The answer to the number of lights in the video is 3 :)

For the fourth experiment, I want to show that how editing and effects affect the concept of a work. Sometimes, colour, transactions, effects, space and time can make a big different on a work. Thus, I try to edit  Michaela Gleave’s work ‘Our Frozen Movement’ (2012). By only adding in the effect, this work becomes an interesting but not creepy anymore.

For the third experiment, my idea is coming from Ori Gersht’s works ‘Big Bang’ and  ‘Pomegranate’. Ori used slow motion to show the details of how an object be destroyed. I think the slow motion is an easy but interesting way to change one’s perception. We can know the detailed process of how an object be changed in our daily life.
For this experiment, I put a tissue with some red paint in a glass of clear water. Then, I stirred the water by using a wire. I repeated these steps by putting tissues with blue paint and yellow paint. Finally, I made the video into slow motion. It is interesting to see how the tissue paper changed in water and how the colours mix together slowly.

For the second experiment, I want to show that how our perception be limited by a small object. Hence, I try to use smartphone and spectacles to do my second experiment. I think the two situations are normal in some people’s daily life. It seems a little bit sarcastic because smartphone and spectacles are to help us to improve our life. Now, they may become a problem if we only focus on the things that we can see by using these convenient tools but not see the world by using our eyes.

My topic is perception. For my first experiment, I want to simulate the compound eyes of flies. Even today, no one can tell what does a fly see the world. Hence, I try to imagine how a fly’s eyes work. If human beings can have compound eyes, the way we understand the world must be changed because of this different perception.

ADAD 1001 Assessment1 Final
Statement
By having all the experiments, it is hard to produce the final artwork/designed object. The main aims of all my experiments are the sounds of the boxes can make. Therefore, I tried to choose some of the videos I have taken and mixed them together by using the same concept of my first experiment. To edit the video, I have used the software ‘Premiere’.
Tumblr media
After that, I tried to change the sounds of every part of the video by applying the concept of my second experiment. Hence, when we watch this video we may feel interesting because all the sounds we hear are different from what we have expected.
Also, I tried to layer some single sounds together to make them like continuous sounds.
Tumblr media
For the concept of my third experiment, I tried to mix all the sound I have used for my last part of the video. It shows the diversity of the sounds that boxes can make.
However, it was a little bit boring if I just make a video like this. Thus, I tried to use some of the sounds I have recorded to make a ‘music’. I adjusted the speed of some sound tracks and put them together.
After finishing editing the whole video, I found that some of the sounds made by the box and other objects are similar to the sounds the original object and box that produced. Therefore, we may not feel strange when we hear some of the sounds in the video.
Here is my final work.

Experiment 3 I put a coin into different sizes of boxes. When I shake these boxes separately, the sound of each box is different. I wanted to know what the sound would be if I did another experiment by putting all the boxes together. Hence, I have recorded the second part of the video.

Experiment 2 I tried to use different objects and a box to produce different sounds. When we see an object rub on a box, our mind will 'know’ what the sound will be by considering our past experiment. Hence, to make some surprises, I wanted to make some changes to the sound I have recorded for the objects and the box. After filming the video, I tried to exchange the sound of a object (e.g. needle) makes on the box with another sound of a object (e.g. eraser) makes on the box.

Concept Statement Assessment2
.1. Art and design often explore relationships between humans and non-humans, the environment and ecology. How can contemporary art and design propose new possibilities for imagining the ‘human’ and the environment?
Human beings use about 4 million years to evolve and we only started living in cities a few thousand years ago.  It means that we have spent a lot of time to live in a natural environment and to stay with other kinds of animals. To live in a modern city, it is much more difficult for us to touch the animals. However, nowadays, more animals start to move into the cities. What will happen when animals are living in cities?
At the beginning, I planned to make a video to show a bird’s life in the city. I try to use the concept of ‘ecologies’ to show the daily life of the bird by changing the location and the space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hence, even though the bird is always at the centre of the screen, its position has changed by changing the background.
To add more content in my video, I try to do more research.
Why animals live in the cities? One of the reason is abundant food source. They can have a more regular food supply than they can find in the countryside. Human are benefited from this too. Animals can clean the city by eating wasted food. By knowing about this, I think it is important to show how a bird finds food in cities in my video.
Human’s food will not affect the health of animals and even help to increase their fertility. Therefore, with a more regular food supply in the cities, animals will have a better life. They may become much bigger compared to their relatives who live in the countryside.
It is interesting to know that animals will evolve rapidly when they live in cities. Even though animals are easier to get food in the cities, they still face large competition. Hence, for the animals who cannot get used to urban life , they cannot survive. When animals go through natural selection, the survived animals will become a resident in cities. Their children will even adapt to urban life better compared to their parents because they are born in cities.  For the animals who live in the cities, they have to understand and adapt to human’s habits, timetable and action. Therefore, they will know that they can find their food from garbage bin, they can ask for food when people who carries food is sitting on a chair, they can play with human and even steal food from human. Animals become more and more ‘human’. When animals evolve, their DNA will also change. When animals who live in cities change their size, habits and even their DNA, will they still recognize their relatives and friends who live in the rural area?
By having this idea, I decided to change the content of my video. I would make a video for a bird’s evolution. As tutor has introduced ‘context and time’ to us, I tried to use a short video to present an animal’s evolution by adjusting the time scale. Thus, even though the video is short, it still shows the process of evolution clearly.  As I also did an experiment by using the concept of ‘ecologies’ before, thus I could still use the same idea. I tried to allocate the materials I need along the road. Therefore, I can reduce the unnecessary content in my video.
Final work!
youtube
By making this video, I want to show how human’s activities affect natural environment. Human’s cities are totally different from the natural environment. In the natural environment, every species is equal and need to follow the rules of the natural environment. However, in cities, all rules are created by human. Human is the only leader in cities and all other species need to follow human’ rules. As the expansion of cities, more animals have to move into cities. They have no choice but try their best to get used to human’s environment. Are we forcing the animals to evolve? Do we have the right to change the natural environment and force the animals to change? I do not think we have, but human beings cannot stop. In one day, when all animals become more and more ‘human’, human beings may need to evolve again for survival.

Assessment 2 process 3
I decided to make a video to introduce the life of a wild bird in city.
After some researches, I know that DNA of wild animals is different from the DNA of the ‘urban’ animals. The wild animals will also get used to the human’s habit and get bigger when they are in the city.
Therefore, I want to make a video of the process for a wild bird become a ‘urban’ bird. Firstly, when the wild bird just enters the city, it will still keep its instinct. So the bird will find its from the grass. Then after a while, it knows that it can easily find food from human’s garbage bin. After knowing and getting familiar with  human beings, the bird tries to get food from human directly. When it lives in the city for a longer time, it knows how to live in the city and starts to follow the rules in the city. When this bird meets its ‘relatives’ or ‘friends’ who live in the wild again accidently, it may not recognise them anymore because its DNA is changed.
At the beginning, I want to use Premiere and Photoshop to do the video. I wanted to cut out the bird on my poster and make it move by drawing out its motion. However, I found that I will need to spend a lot of time to draw out the bird’s movement. Another difficulty is that I need to imagine the bird’s movement by myself. Therefore, to solve these problems, I try to use ROTOSCOPE to make this video. I took a video for the movement of the bird, so when I draw out the bird’s motion, it will look more realistic.
Tumblr media
Firstly, I use Magic Rob to choose the bird. Then, I just use black brush to colour it. The original video I took is about 29 frames per second. As I do not need so many frames, I adjusted it to 8 frames per second. However, after drawing out about 12 frames, I found that the bird was moving too fast. Hence, I slowed down the speed of the video to half of the original speed. Then I added on the background.
Tumblr media
The video is about 1 minute and 6 seconds.

assessment 2 process 2
Wild animals help to clean the city by eating wasted food.
“Along New York’s famous Broadway, for instance, pavement ants may eat an astonishing 2,100 pounds (544 kilograms) of junk food—the equivalent of 60,000 hot dogs—in less than a year, according to a study published in 2014 in Global Change Biology. (Related: “Bugs, Spiders Keep NYC Clean by Eating Garbage.”)“
Human’s food will not affect animals’ health and even increase the fertility of animals. Hence, some animals can have better life in city compared to in the rural area.
“Though Penick and colleagues haven’t yet studied if the diet affects the ants’ longevity or reproduction, they seem just fine eating junk, he says. Thriving on such a diet isn’t unique to ants, either—in Bakersfield, California, the endangered San Joaquin kit fox lives on “people food” in its habitat of golf courses, drainage pits, vacant lots, and school campuses. Despite having higher cholesterol levels than those of rural kit foxes, these urban foxes are doing surprisingly well—even having more babies, according to a 2010 study in the Journal of Mammalogy. You'd expect that eating junk would harm the animals' health, but “little evidence for such effects exist,” the study says.”
More animals may be adapted to city life in the future.
“If urban youngsters are better than their rural compatriots, they may have been born with it, she says. McGill’s Audet doesn't think evolution is a factor, since cities are only a few hundred years old. "It could be a case of extremely rapid evolution, but I think this is unlikely," he says. Another possibility is that the species we see thriving in cities are those that already had adaptations that make them more likely to succeed in cities. For instance, "there's something in the pavement ant's biology,” Penick says, “that makes them better competitors for getting human food."
Not all animals can adapt to city life. But for the animals who live in the city, we need to  treat them as one of us.
“For sure, some animals will never adjust to urban life: "They either have it or they don't," as Audet puts it. As for wildlife that has made the leap to cities, experts say it’s time to view them as one of us. "We have to completely flip the story on its head," says Seth Magle, director of the Urban Wildlife Institute at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo. "We started from this narrative in which the city is the villain, an evil landscape that chews up the environment and leaves nothing behind," he says.”
By reading this article “We Aren’t Alone in Our Cities: 12 Ways Animals Have Adapted to Urban Life”, we can see that many wild animals have adapted to urban life. It means that wild animals follow the rules and habits of human beings.
youtube
Not all animals can adapt to urban life. But for the animals who already become a resident in the city, their DNA will change and their next generation will be more adapted to urban life through evolution. As DNA will change, the animals who live in the city will be different from their relatives who live in the forest. Thus, city may cause evolution of animals.
youtube
This video is showing that how animals affect human life negatively. Animals may attack humans, bring disease to human, make the environment dirty or even rob human’s food. Now I have three ideas about my assessment 2 for ADAD. When wild animals are adapted to urban life, 1. they will act like human and become a real habitant in the city or 2. they will become human’s pet because human will feed them and try to protect animals’ life in city or 3. human beings may not accept them because some wild animals are dangerous. The story about my video: The bird is adapting to urban life and become a ‘human’. When the bird meet the bird who live in the rural, they do not recognise each other even though they look the same.
