Lessons Learned From Failure
Season 6 - Post Need To Know
She was sitting in an armchair in his office when he awoke. He’d seen the time. It was early. Too early for her to be sitting in an armchair, the only light from a lamp in the corner of the room that barely illuminated anything really.
Usually she would be sitting there, a book in her hands and her mind lost to whatever world had piqued her curiosity. But she was sitting there, staring at the wall. And it really bothered him to see her looking like that. Like she was lost.
“Beckett?”
She turned her head to look at him, gave him the barest hint of a smile. “Hey. What are you doing up?”
“Could ask you the same thing.”
“I couldn’t sleep. I needed to think.”
“You didn’t fail, Kate.”
“I messed this all up. Us, my job.”
“From where I’m standing, we’re doing pretty good. And you’ll figure out your job.”
“I thought this was what I wanted,” Kate sighed. “I…”
“You’ll think better if you get some sleep,” he tried again, rubbing at his eyes.
She didn’t move. She just kept staring at the wall.
“Why do you have that on your wall? All the book covers, the reviews, the awards, I get, but why keep that?” she asked him.
He knew what she meant. The rejection letter.
He sat on the chair, looking at the letter, remembering the day he’d received it. How crushed he felt.
“Because I proved them wrong. I overcame that rejection; all the other rejections that came after. Writing was all I ever wanted to do. And people told me it would be hard. Told me my books were no good. But someone believed in me and now I get to prove that letter wrong every day.”
Kate smiled. “A few bestsellers will do that.”
Castle huffed. “A few?”
Kate rolled her eyes at his melodramatics. “You knew what you wanted. Wouldn’t take no for an answer.”
“Talking about you or the books now?” He teased.
Kate “I handled it wrong. I was… I knew you were it for me and I was scared that I wasn’t it for you. I.. I was scared you wouldn’t come with me if I took this job. You know, I love you, right?”
“I know,” Castle assured her. “You said yes. You told me once you were going to be a lawyer. Then you became a cop. Seems to me you want to make a difference. You made a difference today. I’m proud of you.”
Kate rolled her eyes. “I wanted to make a difference. But not play their games.”
“I’ll talk to Bob if you want me to,” Castle offered.
“No, I’ll figure this out,” Beckett assured him.
“We will get this all figured out,” Castle corrected her. “Whatever you want to do, I’ll back your play.”
Kate smiled at him. “I got really lucky when I found you.”
Castle grinned. “You found me?”
“Yes, I walked into that book party. You just wouldn’t leave.”
“Always,” he promised. “You don’t have to sleep but can you at least come back to bed? It’s lonely without you.”
Kate smiled thinly but relented. At least he could distract her if she needed it.
