Campbell: Funnily enough, I first started posting songs on Tumblr. It was my first outlet. So it's kind of weird to being here all these years later because it felt like my own little world and I was like, "I'm pouring my heart out, but only two or three of my friends are going to see it." It felt safe because I didn't want to just go straight to YouTube. I wasn't ready for that.
Nate: He wasn’t ready for the fame.
Jake: There’s a safe anonymity to Tumblr.
Campbell: That's kind of how I met Jake because I'd post my songs and he would slide into my DMs, my inbox.

Sara: Gross and unmemorable
Tegan: It was like 8th grade, no offense to the guy but it was outside of a Dairy Queen and very gross and unmemorable. First kiss with a girl: life changing.
Yearbook quotes (Tegan): We didn't have yearbook quotes at our high school, it wasn’t a thing. We had dog tags made because it was the 90's and we were very influenced by Dazed and Confused. My dog tag said “mean people suck” and on the other side it said “different is good.” Sara's was probably like “I’m busy reading.”
When you think of a typical American high school experience:
Sara: Football is the main takeaway. In Canada we have football but it doesn’t have the same stature. It’s sort of like, you can play football or you can play hockey. But whenever I think about high school movies and television from America it’s always football and cheerleaders.

Hometown school traditions: Everyone meets in the McDonald’s parking lot and then there’s a list of dares that the prom committee has put together and you film yourself doing the dares and send it to them and it’s a fundraiser. I think the winning team gets something. I don’t remember.
2000's teen movie freeze frame epilogue: It would be a record scratch then the screen gets frozen. It would say: Leith Ross did turn out to be a homosexual, currently lives as a homosexual in a small town in the middle of nowhere in Canada.
Queer high school experience: There wasn’t much of one. I wasn’t out yet. I came out to two people in grade 11. And then about 6 months later I had the classic backslide into pretending that never happened. Closeted in high school then went to college in the big city (Toronto) and that’s where I was gay. For the first year of my college experience that’s where I was like, “all right, it’s time.”
Boldest teen fashion choice: All yellow outfits
Lunch table in high school: We called it the alcove. It was this random little hole that was created by the entrance to the auditorium and we would go hide there.
What you'd write in your own high school yearbook: Deep breaths. Calm down. Stop it. But also be yourself. But also it’s not so big of a deal.

Teenage crush: There was this boy named Matthew that was this cool skater kid and he was my older friend’s little brother. I was just in love with him at 14 or something. He was the first guy I held hands with. He was very cute.
