Original characters are really just a random assortment of personality traits and physical features taken from myself, from people I saw on the street, and from my favourite characters from other people.

Writers of tumblr, I have a question I struggle with myself and I wanted to see if anyone had any words of wisdom.

Do you struggle with representation in your own writing? I feel like I, as a writer, SHOULD represent more than what I am, but I am scared to do so because I also often feel that if I were to represent other cultures or things of that nature that I would somehow offend that culture, either by not representing them accurately enough due to my own difficulty in understanding these sorts of things, or in my attempts to incorporate a culture or other such thing into ones character, accidentally create a character that seems… I’m not sure how to put it. In some way or another, offensive, for lack of better words.

It feels like trying to walk a tightrope after being blinded by the very blood of someone else who had just been attacked. You’re trying to perform some crazy balancing act, you’re scared you’re going to be attacked, and you have no idea where you’re going while knowing a wrong step could end you, and if you choose not to walk the tightrope you know whatever rabid animal just attacked someone else is going after you immediately after.

Am I alone in this struggle, or are there lots of people out there who fear of both trying and the fear of not trying to represent, because you feel either may be a stain on your attempts to create a fine work of art? Because to me it just feels so hard to do justice for any group I would want to represent, while not shitting myself in fear that I may accidentally offend someone in my attempts to do so.

Write what you love. Write what sets your soul on fire. Write what makes you happy. Write a story you’re truly passionate about.
