I have been seeing so many hate comments on Luca. And please don't shut me up with "stop it's a kids show" No I won't, because would you be this pressed if this was about a boy n girl in a movie like this? It's same as a little boy having a crush on a girl in a kids movie. that's completely appropriate for kids but this is not? Grow up. Please don't tell me you aren't homophobic when you clearly don't want kids movie characters to be called gay. Why is it a bad thing for kids to hear that?

I think we should talk more about it, the way alberto was clearly trying to dodge all of luca's questions to avoid crying because it was supposed to be something that makes luca happy and he doesn't want him to regret anything.
even thought, he ends up crying, he makes sure he tells luca everything to let him know that he shouldn't feel bad about wanting to live his dreams.

luca spoilers!! vvvvvvv
so i had some thoughts and wanted to share them.
upon my second viewing i saw the ramp scene and thought, wait, is this foreshadowing?
let’s break it down. alberto has convinced luca to essentially jump off a cliff with him. on the way down, their vehicle is falling apart as before, but now that luca is there he’s able to hold the whole thing together by clinging to alberto, who is totally oblivious to the state of their situation. and it works for a bit! they sail off the ramp into the sky.
but pretty quickly, they’re headed towards a huge rock that will probably kill them if they hit on it. and what happens?
luca pushes alberto away, saving them both.
i was instantly reminded of another scene where luca pushes alberto away: the sea monster reveal. in this scene alberto has once again put them both in a dangerous situation, and luca pushes him away, but this time, to protect himself.
throughout the movie, luca holds their precarious situation together despite alberto’s somewhat self-destructive tendencies. by biking away from his parents when they see him, saving himself and alberto from ercole and his cronies in the alley, etc., luca is holding their failing craft together, just barely, while alberto actively denied that it’s failing in the first place. he provokes the bullies that want to hurt them even before they know that they aren’t human, and even gaslights luca about his parents being there at all!
but finally, when alberto has metaphorically once again thrown them both at a rock by compromising their secret, luca pushes him away and launches them both in very different directions. this is luca and alberto at their lowest: luca, fearful of what might happen, opts to prioritize his own safety and comfort even at the cost of something important to him, and alberto, prioritizing his ego, acts selfishly and without regard for his or his friend’s safety.
so the question is, is the ramp scene foreshadowing? i say it is. luca holds them together for as long as he can before pushing alberto away in the heat of crisis.
but does it have the same effect? the first time luca pushes alberto away to save both their lives. the second time he does it to protect himself. i wonder, if he hadn’t betrayed alberto, what would have happened? would ercole have hurt or killed him? would luca and alberto both be driven out, never to return? if that were the case, luca wouldn’t have been able to participate in the race, and alberto wouldn’t have needed to come save him. they may have stayed together, but they may also have lost everything they’d worked for, destroying their dream for good. in the end, luca’s choice led to the best outcome; they win the race, the humans are no longer trying to kill sea monsters, luca gets to go to school, and alberto finds a new father. it’s a happy ending all around :)
though it worked out in the end, the message here isn’t “betray your friends.” the important thing to remember is that just as luca clung to alberto in the ramp scene, this wouldn’t have worked if either of them truly gave up on each other or their dream. they were able to rise above the turbulence in their relationship and recognize that being there for each other was more important and worth the risk. it was their devotion to each other that got them their happy ending 💙💜
