It is difficult to fathom or express the sheer scale or depth of this ecological and humanitarian crisis: swathes of land the size of small European countries have been razed, 23 people killed, entire towns lost, tens of thousands of people displaced, and native wildlife populations decimated at a scale never before seen. Fanned by climate change, and exacerbated by an inept Prime Minister who has proven himself unfit to lead, the brunt of this ongoing horror has been left at the foot of our state’s underfunded and under-resourced volunteer rural fire services and our rural residents, who have been warning the Federal Government and requesting assistance for years. In early January, we are only halfway through our fire season.
