yo i’m gonna wildly nuance this rq
alder is literally the representation of a man. like the writers made him power hungry, manipulative and controlling, etc., bc that is what the typical man is.
i mean you can HEAR that through his and the others’ dialogue. adler does not care what he does to bell; he never has and never will! this just goes to show all men benefit from the actions of violent men—it allows men to perform at the barest minimum and still feel good about themselves. the existence of violent men grants "good" men awards for basic decency—those “good men” being lazar and sims—who didn’t do anything to physically harm bell, but allowed bell to be emotionally and mentally damaged & did not speak up for bell anyway. (it’s also why park doesn’t speak as well, it keeps her in line.)
i mean i won’t even get into the fact that these are CIA officers and the writers want you to feel bad for THEM bc THEY were inconvenienced by bells “lack” of memory—which makes sense that treyarch would do that bc they’re an american company protecting and justifying the means of the CIA. (also why the soviet ending wasn’t canon bc no way in HELL would treyarch write an ending were you liberate yourself from your oppressors w/ a soviet victory.)
tldr: op is right & men suck.
hot take: Russell Adler is not meant to be a good person nor is he meant to be redeemable.
