Finished Season 3 of A discovery of Witches a few days ago and here are my thoughts: (Warning: spoilers to an extent)

I loved it! I do wish it was longer but I know because of COVID-19 it had to be cut shorter, but for what we got with the episodes we have I was happy and grateful. I’m really sad it has ended and say goodbye.

What I liked:

The birth of the twins (it was honestly so much better than the book (sorry) , the music, the acting, Teresa was amazing in the scene. I do wish Yseabeau and Marthe was there though)

(A lot of people might disagree with me about this but) Satu working with Benjamin instead of Knox. I felt like there was a parallel with her working with Benjamin. With Diana and Matthew (the good Weaver witch and vampire with Blood rage) attempting to end the covenant, save the creatures and bring the creatures to a new age out of the long lived fear and darkness that plagued them all and affected them with siring (vampire), magic (witches) and mental illnesses (daemons) issues and that we are all from the same tree but different branches vs Satu and Benjamin (the evil version of the two)

Sarah killing Knox instead of Diana (It felt right for her to do so, he had taken her sister and brother in law, almost killed her niece and killed her wife. It felt poetic for her to destroy him after he underestimated her as a mere “kitchen witch” and “pest”)

Toby Regbo as Jack! I loved him! 🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰 At first glance I wasn’t sure about Toby playing this tormented damaged baby but after seeing him in just one episode 🥺🥺 He’s such a baby bean, must be protected at all costs

I loved Toby’s portrayal of blood rage. You could see a difference between him (Jack’s) and Matthew’s blood rage (seen in season 2) with Jack’s it is triggered by anything and he tries to fight for control, to retain his humanity before the rage fuels him and makes him feral, it’s a constant mental battle between the blood rage monster he “supposedly” is (according to Baldwin and Gerbert) vs the person he wants to be whereas Matthew’s appears more rage instigated and feral like a angered wolf ready to attack its prey

Diana calling Jack her son after Baldwin attacks him and tells him to let him go ❤️❤️❤️

With Jack’s attack on Baldwin before the previous point after he bad mouths him, loved that. It definitely showed the difference in blood rage’s triggers with Jack compared to Matthew

Going back to Jack again, I LOVED the reunion! I honestly prefer it better than the book. Even the scene before that when Benjamin comes looking for Jack by asking Hubbard where is he and to let him know when he shows up was great. (It was like “right, time to return what’s not mine. Hey Jack, get in the car you’re going home.”)

Father Hubbard fighting back against Knox, I watched that scene over and over again

Marcus’ flock in New Orleans (LOVED them!!! Ransome, Geraldine, there was amazing from the moment they appeared onscreen. I loved them giving shit to Matthew after the damage he did to them, calling him out and making him realise he needs to own up to what he did and they will not let him off that easy)

Marcus calling Matthew out on his hypocrisy (I wish there was more of it!!) 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Matthew being the one to say the names of all of Marcus’ children he killed then Ransome tells him to say them all and if he misses one he will kill him instead of Ransome telling him to name them all in order to gain him and the others as part of the scion. It really showed that Matthew finally coming to terms with what he has done to Marcus’ children

Marcus and Phoebe! They were so cute, not enough scenes 🥰

The christening and the set up before it was beautiful.

Gebert’s face when Baldwin tells him that he is stepping down as the de clairmont representative and Diana says she’s the new rep! I pissed myself at his reaction

Agatha! Badass daemon queen Agatha! I loved her this season, her bravery to stand up against Knox in episode 1 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’m so happy for her

Loved Gallowgalss in this season. I felt so bad for him in the end, no one deserves to feel like that

Dominico’s character development! I honestly hated that gutless kiss ass weasel in the first season and second but in the 3rd, he has my respect. I loved when he realised the damage Gerbert’s leadership would do to the creatures and defies him by telling Baldwin the truth (The killings, everything that was supposedly Matthew’s “fault” was in fact Gerbert’s doing as he was working with Benjamin all these years)

Chris and Miriam scenes! They were so CUTE!!!! 🥰🥰🥰 I kinda wish they would end up together

Fernando 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 I love him! He was such a wonderful character, I loved his interaction with Sarah about mourning their lost one and telling her that he wasn’t allowed to mourn Hugh and not acknowledged as his Mate

Jack, Chris, the twins, Sarah, Miriam becoming Knights of Lazurus

What I wished was in the final season/ what I would add if I could change some things about the season:

(Please note: I’m making a suggestion of what I would add. Trigger Warning: Mention of assault)

Phillipe and Emily’s ghosts talking to each other just as Emily’s funeral ends (episode 1, watching Diana and Sarah leave)

Phillipe and Diana’s conversation in the end

The horrors of Benjamin’s torture on the witches (to an extent, more if Satu and Knox was with him, both “ripping” witches open with magic to see how he could conceive a witch-vampire child like Diana and Matthew, like how that witch tried to see inside Diana’s mind in season 2) and Jack’s

Mention of Jack’s daughter being killed in front of him by Benjamin and his sons while he is forced to watch (to show the mental trauma they inflicted on him)

More Yseabeau scenes! I would’ve liked to have her being held prisoner at Gerbert’s as leverage to cooperate to the congregation as she was in the book and her causing mayhem whilst there

Janet Gowdie making an appearance of some sorts or having her a member of the congregation or a retired member of the congregation coming to offer Diana aid when searching for the final page of the Book of Life

Satu and Diana having a witch fight in Poland (I’m thinking something like Scarlet Witch vs Thanos in Avengers endgame, to an extent) (Satu, angry that Diana has become the Book of Life and taken its power, and that Diana is the witch of the prophecy threatens to go to the Congregation and threatens her children, and Diana, glowing with the goddess’s power, her own and the knots attacks Satu, destroying walls and rooms like the fight with Matthew and Benjamin with magic then she spellbinds her and ends with something similar to the line in the 3rd book “come after my children again and I’ll throw you down that well and leave you there.”

Jack calling Matthew and Diana Dad and Mum (spewing that never happened especially in the final scene between Jack and Matthew in the final episode)

Jack and Marcus have a one on one conversation about Jack being allowed to live after what he did and Marcus’ children not and how Marcus is upset about Matthew’s decision to let his brother live and how he hates Jack for that. They would also talk about how Matthew treats Jack with more love and tenderness than he does with Marcus (how Marcus is treated like Baldwin (with Phillipe seeing Baldwin as his pride and Matthew his (Phillipe’s) joy), like Matthew’s pride and Jack is the joy) and the two finding some ground to walk together on. (I want these two to be goofy brothers)

The wall drawing/ blood rage scene with Jack!!!!! (I would’ve loved this scene to have been in the show! It was my favourite scene in the book! If I could imagine how the scene would go it would be like this: Jack is drawing in his notebook of a victim’s face, etching the details of a jaw and then all of a sudden he gets lost in his head and he sees everything, all the victims’ faces swarm him, their screams deafen the sounds of the outside world, the page of the book not enough to get them out of his head, his life as a human comes, the man with the breaches, life on the streets, his life as a vampire, the blood rage, Benjamin’s torment, his daughter’s death, all being etched in the walls, the pencils becoming stubbles, then disappearing one by one, his eyes black, skin pasty white, heart thundering in his chest all while he is humming and singing: “all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put poor Jack back together again.” (Nod to the book scene)

Jack being mentioned to have designed the new family crest or giving Diana the emblem (the one scene in the final scene is the crest Jack designs)

More Corra!

Diana’s parents appearing as ghosts, possibly lending her their powers as she deals with Benjamin

The fight scene with Matthew and Benjamin to be longer and more intense

So you know how Jack was born in roughly 1583 and is 21 when made a vampire. Hes both 21 years old AND 438 years old.

But Marcus was born in 1757 so technically he's younger but was 24 when made a vampire. So he's both 24 years old AND 264 years old.

Do you think they have lots of fun introducing each other as the little brother.

It was very, very, very hard for me to film through the entire [season], actually. Whenever Em was mentioned, or there was something to do with Em, I would just cry. We were sort of like halfway through the season, and I thought I was kind of over it. And then, suddenly her name came up out of the blue, and hearing somebody say her name, I just completely lost it. I was a mess. So it was hard. It was really hard. But in the funny sort of way, for me, the season ends when things sort of resolve themselves. In a sense, I’d had that resolution as well for myself, because we just had to get on, and I had to get on without her. It was a different dynamic for sure. Without Em being there, it allowed for Sarah to learn to understand Diana and to connect with her in a way that she didn’t necessarily need to before, because Em did that. Sarah loves Diana, Em was the one who was the empathetic outwardly, where Sarah found it more difficult to be open emotionally. So that was the journey that Sarah then, in a sense, found herself on. What we know about SEASON 3 so far

A Discovery of Witches season 3 is coming in early 2022.

No specific broadcast date is announced yet. Fans are still waiting for a full trailer. There was a 30-second teaser released back in March, plus a couple of snippets from recent SKY TV promo videos. Unfortunately, unlike last year, there won’t be a season 3 cast Q&A or panel at the upcoming New York Comic Con.

Ugh!

This is what we know so far - season 3 is based on book 3 of the All Souls Trilogy, The Book of Life. It’s currently in post-production and will have 7 episodes! This is onfirmed by Jane Tranter of Bad Wolf which produces the show.

“We’re making 7 episodes only, for the cost of 8 because those costs have gone into the COVID costs and keeping everybody safe.”

A Discovery of Witches Season 3 Synopsis

A Discovery of Witches began when Diana Bishop laid her hands on Ashmole 782 and found herself thrust into a dark, sensual and thrilling world of creatures she had spent her life swerving.

The third season will close that circle and see Diana finally reassemble the Book of Life and crack open its tantalising mysteries. Matthew and Diana must find the Book and muster their forces to do battle with the greatest of their enemies: the allied members of the Congregation, who enforce the strict segregation of creatures.

Matthew and Diana’s first priority is the protection of their growing twins – two babies who represent threats to the entire foundation of the Congregation.

Matthew has to face up to the consequences of his past, confront his own deep secret of bloodrage and make amends for some of his most violent acts in order to successfully launch his own family. Diana has to become a mother while facing the biggest challenge of her life – only she can unlock the mysteries of the Book of Life so that her children will not have to hide their true natures as Diana had to.
