something about ronan lynch, the devoted catholic that he is, pronouncing adam's name like it's the first time it's leaving his mouth, every single time anew. the only person to ever truly see adam, breathing life into the simple word that was his name, the only person ever to pronounce it like he really meant it. just like god breathing life into the first human created by him, ronan was the one to make adam feel like he was a creation worthy of love too.

Blue and Ronan don’t really have money issues, she regularly takes his credit card and buys shit and he thinks it’s funny because Declan would be horrified, but where they DO have an issue is with doling out punishments toward people who catcall blue/generally annoy her, because Ronan has been known to literally pick ppl up and throw them in dumpsters over this. Which makes blue mad because she’s like “I can fight my own battles!!!” And Ronan’s like come on, this is at least 40% just for me, and she’s like let!!! Me!!! Do!!! The!!!!! Punching!!!!!! and that’s how Ronan teaches her to box.

TRB CH 2 ✨
when Ronan and Adam are introduced !
-Stiefvater is big on setting up arcs and paying attention to beginning and endings. Gansey is introduced by himself, directly connected to Blue from her previous chapter. Ronan and Adam show up together, and that holds a little extra weight because it’s the reader’s first impression of them
-I had my eyes on Ronan and Adam right away cuz of this
Ronan scratched at an old, brown scab beneath the five knotted leather bands he wore around his wrist. Last week, he and Adam had taken turns dragging each other on a moving dolly behind the BMW, and they both still had the marks to show it.
the two of them hang out doing dumb shit without Gansey, that's established right away
-this is very small (’s gonna be the premise of this whole thing ✨) but we get
"Hey, runt. What went down with Declan?"
This last part was directed at Adam as he climbed out of the BMW with Ronan's phone still in hand. He offered it to Ronan, who shook his head disdainfully. Ronan despised all phones, including his own.
Adam said, "He's coming by at five tonight."
Unlike Ronan, Adam's Aglionby sweater was secondhand, but he'd taken great care to be certain it was impeccable. He was slim and tall
(again I know this is small but) the contrast between what Ronan says and what the narrative tells us made me generally feel like ‘I’ma have to watch them cuz what they say ain’t reliable~’
also right out of the gate, the two of them are continued to be linked. Adam as a character is introduced to us in Ronan’s car talking to Ronan’s brother on Ronan’s behalf, we’re meant to think about their appearances and their attitudes in relation to one another, and Adam hangs on to Ronan’s phone for him
-Gansey thinks about how it seems like Ronan and Adam must have fought. but despite being in a fight, Adam is still willing to take Ronan’s calls for him
[I think it's funniest to imagine Adam got in the habit of answering Ronan’s phone because Ronan said something to tick him off and it happened to coincide with Declan calling Ronan, so Adam picked up the call and was like ‘Hello Declan you're on speaker.’
this scene couldn't have been that first time or I imagine Ronan would have gotten out of the car like ‘for some reason you don't wanna think Parrish is a bitch, Gansey, but he's a maSSiVE fucking bitch’ lmao]
-Gansey thinks:
It could have been any one of the mornings in the last year and a half. Ronan and Adam would make up by the end of the day
so he isn't worried Adam and Ronan really dislike each other, or that they won't wanna hang out with one another and Gansey will have to hang out with them separately
(once again, this is very small, but) I also think "make up" is sort of interesting word choice, in that I feel like it implies a certain amount of effort? like it's not just saying eventually they'd move on, like they’d just get over it or at some point they couldn't remember what they'd been fighting about anyway. we know just by their personalities that Ronan and Adam wouldn't actually full on apologize to one another, but it does sound like they have an established pattern of bickering and then actively extending an olive branch to one another
[I’m not saying it's anything very profound. I imagine it has the feel of ‘hey I don't wanna fight right now I wanna tell you this diss I just thought up about Whelk and it wouldn't be the same trying to tell Gansey he’d just tell me I was “““mean”””’
the point is that the text indicates that however it happens, it happens ✨]
-toward the end of the chapter we get
Adam leaned into the car. "We'll follow you back to the school. It'll get you back, but it's not done yet," he said. "There's still something wrong with it.”
so Adam both arrives with Ronan and chooses to leave with Ronan
Adam specifically states that the Pig is still having issues, so one would think it would have made more sense for Adam to drive back to school with Gansey, so that he can hear and feel how the car is driving to help diagnose it. especially if we're meant to believe that Adam and Ronan don't really get along, and they're just forced together because they both happen to be friends with Gansey
but there's groundwork laid in just the first chapter we're meeting them to show us that this isn't exactly the case 👀
-I think that’s the most interesting thing about Adam and Ronan’s dynamic in the first book.
we don’t get any of Ronan’s POV in this book, but Adam spends a lot of time talking like ‘it sucks how I HAVE to interact with Ronan because of Gansey’ but we’re shown things that juxtapose this right away, with the knowledge that Adam and Ronan hang out without Gansey “dragging each other on a moving dolly.” so it begs the question why does Adam feel the need to go out of his way to be extra about framing it the way that he does (👀)
