yall cant defend this one: "Sometimes, I will write a scene with two characters that Ive planned for them to get together, and then they have no..." She shakes her head slightly at me. "It's like holding two dolls and being like, now kiss! And they won't. ... And then some different character will walk in and they will just." --- she snaps.
DOESNT THAT JUST SCREAM ELAIN AND AZRIEL? #gwynriel 🥰
If this is how literally Gwynriels are reading, suddenly that entire crack ship makes a lot of sense.
There's a difference between "won't kiss" vs "couldn't kiss". "Won't kiss" implies lack of chemistry or an incompatible pairing. "Can't kiss" implies there is a physical interruption, something tangible preventing them from kissing.
Azriel & Elain snuck downstairs to see each other. Elain breathed "Yes" and showed she wanted him to kiss her. Azriel's running internal monologue showed he wanted to kiss (and do so much more) Elain. Their kiss was interrupted - not because of lack of chemistry or because they "won't kiss" - but because of a tangible obstacle in the way - Rhys.
I think it's been made clear if Rhys hadn't interrupted, Elriel would've done so much more than just kiss. (Miss Girl was out here getting aroused by him touching her neck and Azriel's thoughts were a running erotica novel about wanting to taste her, imagining entering her, etc.) y'all can't argue this point.
That statement made by SJM was in the context of having two characters that lack chemistry or are incompatible - which is something she only discovers through writing and fleshing out their personality/storyline more.
Elain & Azriel don't lack chemistry. That statement made by SJM doesn't apply to them. That entire interview, SJM was talking about rejected mates, what happens if you don't like what fate has assigned to you, what if there is no chemistry between two characters that were initially supposed to end up together: idk about you, but sounds clear she's referring to Elucien.
Rejected mates - what is the only couple with a known mating bond we know of at this moment? ✅ Elucien
What if there is no chemistry between two characters? ✅ Elucien
What if you don't like what fate has assigned to you? ✅ Elucien
It's funny people are trying to twist Sarah's words to be about Elriel, when they are literally the only couple at the moment that has clear desire and chemistry. Elain & Lucien won't kiss, even if you put them in a room together. Elain & Azriel were in a room together and they couldn't kiss due to Rhys intervention. Do you see the difference?
Also I thought the antis entire argument was "Azriel only lusts after Elain he's just a fuckboy". Does his running internal monologue about fantasizing about Elain sound like someone who has no attraction or chemistry with her?
Which is it? Either he's a lustful playboy who only wants Elain for sex or there's no chemistry or attraction between them hence the "won't kiss" comment . Can't be both.

Looks and Touching: Elriel
Tumblr media
The Looks:
Elain shyly glancing away from Azriel's soft smile, puzzling Cassian. (Are we suprised?)
Tumblr media
An utterly charged look passing between Azriel and Elain on Solstice, the same night he is grappling with whether or not to give her the necklace be bought for her.
Tumblr media
The Touching:
Azriel cradling Elain to his chest, not letting her go until Rhys pulls her from his arms even though he can barely stand and his power has completely given out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Azriel taking her hand to give her Truth-Teller, and lingering after their gazes meet.
Tumblr media
PLZ THEY ARE SO AGGGGHJSHDJSD *bites screen from cute aggresion*
How could you not want them?!

Link to read!
Teaser from beginning below!👇
The strong scent of cedar graced Elain’s nose, silently beckoning, calling her from her slumber. Even then, she hadn’t bothered to open her eyes. Hadn’t bothered to consider where the fragrance was coming from.
She was so comfortable.
Too comfortable to get up, too comfortable to move.
Perfect, this was perfect.
A heavy weight shifted from behind, pressing itself right up against her back. Another force had snaked around her waist, pulling her in firmly.
The abrupt movements pulled Elain back out of her dozing. Slowly fluttering her eyes open, she took in the view of the daylit room. Everything seemed normal. There was nothing there.
Her gaze cascaded down to her lower half, spotting a massive leathery wing lazily slumped across her midriff and off the side of the bed. All the way down to the floor.
Another shift from behind, skin and warm air met with the crook of her neck. Elain tensed, sucking in a breath as clarity finally came to mind. She recalled it all, what occurred just hours before, who she’d invited into her bed—
It was Azriel.
It was Azriel who was lying against her. Holding her close, skin on skin, back to front with no space in between. Enveloping her in his own warmth and in the safety of his grasp. Color rose onto Elain’s cheeks as she laid there, silently enduring the skittering heat of his rhythmic breathing across her skin. With each warm wave, a shiver crept down her spine.
Hot. It was getting hot.
Elain couldn’t fight it. This male, who her heart still so viciously and unwaveringly ached for, had been so close. His skin on hers, his mouth against her neck, his arms around her waist— It was one of the ultimate expressions of intimacy.
It was getting too hot.
Her own festering arousal had doomed her from the start, the heat of it already beginning to pool down between her legs. And if Azriel scented it, if he woke up and smelled it—
They had never been this intimately close before. Not in this way. Everything last night, everything before, it was all for a reason. But this blatant touching, this unrestrained and subconscious touching was so like solstice night— And yet, this was… This was so much better.
The taloned thumb of Azriel’s wing twitched before the entire appendage moved upward, rendering Elain effectively clung onto and cocooned. She’d been trapped in his arms and by extension, his own wing.
She couldn’t bear it. The embarrassment in the growing heat between her own legs. The race of her heart. The simmering of her skin to the touch, his touch. She had no choice. She had to escape this— Escape before she might do something she’d regret.
Elain squirmed a little, hands reaching down to undo Azriel’s hold on her. His thick arms, while firm in grip, had ultimately loosened just enough to barely let go of her. The male loosed a low groan against her neck, right into her ear.
The delightful sound of it, the mere feeling of the vibrations against her skin—
It was getting worse.
Her body, it all ached for him. Throbbed for him. The want, the need fought like hell against her whole being. The damning desire to wake him and let him do whatever he wanted with her, begging to resume what once could’ve been all those weeks ago—
Too hot. Its all too hot.
She had to go. She couldn’t make another mistake again. Couldn’t bear the thought of further ruining what had already been undone and done again.
Elain slipped out from under that large black wing, careful not to step on the remainder of the length of it that laid arced on the floor. Azriel shifted again on the bed, seemingly from the sudden loss of warmth. Of her warmth.
She fled into the bathroom. Quickly. Quietly. The door behind her clicked shut, followed by a series of soft panting from her. Biting her lip and pressing her shaking thighs together, she tried her best to calm her ravished body, so at odds with her addled mind.
This hunger she felt, this insatiable hunger— She couldn’t do this to herself. Not to Azriel. Not again. Not when her own feelings were responsible for solstice night. Not when it was her fault that she misunderstood their relationship. Not when it was a mistake before. She wouldn’t— couldn’t dare make it again.
The guilt had practically swallowed Elain whole. Guilt for feeling this way. For allowing herself to feel for a male who didn’t even want her in the way she wanted him, to love a male of whom she shouldn’t.
For even allowing her own traitorous body to react to him this way, when all he had done was breathe down her neck. When all he was doing was sleeping. He couldn’t even have true peace in his own rest. Not from her. Not when she was around.
Elain pushed herself off the door as she strained to ignore the sizzling sensations that still remained, the ones that fought with her in every step she made.
Bending over the rim of the tub, she turned on the bath to get it running warm. She had to rinse off to clear her mind, to rid herself of the scent of her own arousal. And perhaps to hide from Azriel out of her own crippling anxiety. She could only hope that he hadn’t woken up yet. Let alone smelled it.

lets talk about the truthteller scene, so az gives elain truthteller but then feyre was like "the only bridge of connection was THAT KNIFE" would you call that romantic?
I don't think it was inherently romantic actually, but it was significant. That scene marks a turning point in not just Elain, but Elain & Azriel's relationship.
Before that moment, Elain seldom had moments of boldness or where she was even the focus in ACOWAR.
The first turning point for her was when Azriel discovered her powers, freeing her from her depressive state.
The next turning point was when she helped Feyre find the Suriel - showing she did care, she did want to help, however she could.
Then the next significant event was when she asked Graysen to give the humans asylum in his fortress- displaying her boldness and strength to do what is right even if she knew it would pain her.
Then, when Azriel rescued her from Hybern. This scene I do believe was written to be romantic, but it also displayed Elain's resilience and determination when she kicks the hounds away with her bare feet.
The truthteller scene I think is more than just Azriel giving Elain a dagger to defend herself with. Let's not forget that Cassian offered Elain a dagger first, but she took the one Azriel gave her.
This scene is significant for both Elain & Azriel:
For Elain: The fact that she even accepted this dagger shows she was willing to do what was necessary to help her family. Maybe she had a vision, maybe she trusted Azriel after he rescued her and whatever conversations they had together in the garden, maybe she wanted something to defend herself with - but something definitely made her accept Truthteller over the dagger offered by Cassian. She sealed her fate, accepted what had to be done the second she took the blade.
Additionally, the scene is written from Feyre's POV, and Feyre uses some very vivid, beautiful imagery to describe it. It's interesting because the act itself of giving someone a weapon for defense is not something people romanticize- and yet that is what Feyre did when she described the scene as a painting.
Tumblr media
That knife is the first indicator of a connection between them. Feyre had no business describing Azriel handing over a knife so beautifully - which leads us to raise the question - Why? She could've said "Azriel gave her a dagger 😐" and moved on to the actual battle scenes, but she didn't.
Compared to the other main characters, Elain does not objectively have that many scenes in ACOWAR. And yet, there are intentional scenes with her dedicated to Azriel discovering her powers, Azriel sitting with her in the garden, Azriel rescuing her from Hybern, Azriel giving her truthteller. It is for a reason. It is all significant to draw attention to that connection.
For Azriel: The truthteller scene is also significant because it is made clear he goes out of his way to make sure Elain is not defenseless.
He says "so I want you to." - Personally asking her to take the dagger.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, he gently takes her hand and places the blade into it. When has Azriel ever initiated physical contact? In this scene, he isn't even self conscious about his own hands, no, his focus is on making sure Elain is protected. Their hands even linger on the blade, enforcing that connection between them.
Tumblr media
On top of all that, SJM makes it a point to show us Azriel has never lent out that dagger before Elain.
Feyre wonders. Cassian gawks. Rhys confirms the fact that Azriel has never let anyone even touch that dagger. 3 separate people observe and are shocked by Azriel's actions.
The fact that Azriel trusted Elain enough to take his dagger was significant.
The fact that she accepted the dagger was significant.
The fact that Feyre described the scene so beautifully, with an artist's mind, was significant.
The fact that 3 people were shocked by Azriel offering his most prized possession to Elain, was significant.
Without even delving further into what Elain used that dagger for ultimately, and the importance of her stepping out of a shadow and slaying the king with that very knife - the entire truthteller scene was a pivotal moment for both Elain, Azriel and their relationship. It might not have been romantic in the most basic sense, but it marked an important moment in their blossoming relationship for sure.

So I have news (?) to share.
I had already said that one of my friends was reading ACOTAR, and she finished ACOSF yesterday.
By the way she’s totally a casual reader she is not in the fandom in any way.
Having said that, I asked her back when she was reading ACOWAR what couples she thought were gonna get together, and she said Nessian and Elriel. Then she read ACOFAS and was totally fan-girling over the headache power scene (I hadn’t told her anything, didn’t influence her in any way lol). Now she finished ACOSF and said this:
Tumblr media
I showed her the bonus chapters just in case her opinion changed but it didn’t budge. All she told me was that she was so excited for Elriel because now they can’t be together and it will hit harder lol.
In conclusion, Elriel endgame is very obvious and is EXPECTED because SJM wanted it to be.

The timeline has always been pretty clear, so i don't know why that side is acting surprised right now.
Sjm has only addressed Elain and Lucien 3 times (2 in 2016) and one time in 2017.
The last one was during a Q&A during the Tower of Dawn Tour and giving how Acofas/Acosf turned out, i think we all have the answer for the question it was posed :
INTERVIEWER: So the next question is from Abigail, and says: Will Elain accept the mating bond with Lucien? And congrats on your announcement!
SJM: (people cheering) Aw, thank you! So if you guys don't know what we're talking about... I'm preggers. (Laughter and cheers) --talks about it some more before coming back to topic--
You... might get an answer to Elain's fate in the upcoming spin off books. I'm not gonna tell you when. Once you read ACOFAS, you may get a sense of the timeline and layout and things, but I've been planning and thinking... I know everyone's fate and (hesitates and laughs) romantic situation.
Interviewer: Not ominous, at all.
SJM: (literally cackles maniacally) Jusf - I have so many secrets I'm keeping from you guys!
Charlie Bowater: How do not let anything slip?
SJM: I live in constant terror of just accidentally being like, "oh and by the way these people are mates. Surprise!" I have no self-restraint in any regards except trying to keep secrets. (...)

Happy Elriel month eve!
To get ready for it I wanted to post the elriel art I had commissioned.
Tumblr media
I commissioned this Elriel Garden Scene with artist chelzd_art.
The more we get Azriels pov we see that Azriel is actually really tender so I wanted a piece inspired by their time together in the garden showcasing that side of him. This perfectly captures how I feel elriel is with each other ❤️

I really want a secret moment like this for elriel where they dance in the woods or her garden. It would be simply perfection.
Doesn’t it say in acosf that azriel is really good at waltzing?
They are so sleeping beauty coded already.

Let’s think about this quote for a sec:
Who is the next book about…
“I thought it was pretty obvious.”
Now keeping that in mind, let’s see what happens when you google “Who is the next ACOTAR book about?”
Time Magazine:
“Maas has already announced that the next book she will publish is the sixth installment in ACOTAR, a highly-anticipated release that many fans suspect will flesh out the stories of Feyre's sister Elain and Azriel, just as A Court of Silver Flames did for Nesta and Cassian.”
Business Insider:
“Although she didn't specify which characters from "ACOTAR" the novel she is writing will focus on, Maas previously said in a February 2021 conversation with Eva Chen that she planned to write a novel focused on Elain Archeron, Feyre's older sister, planting seeds for the book in the last installment in the series, "A Court of Silver Flames," which was about Nesta, the eldest Archeron sister.”
Today:
“There’s a third Archeron sister, Elain, as well as another in Rhysand’s trio of friends, Azriel, whose stories are left to tell. (And Maas did say she plans to explore Azriel more.)”
Screen Rant:
“As far as characters go, it's been repeatedly speculated that the sixth ACOTAR novel will follow Elain and Azriel, Elain and Lucien, or all three.”
Culturess:
“The most obvious choice for the character at the center of the next book would seem to be Elain. She’s the Archeron sister we know the least about, and who probably has the most unanswered questions around her story.”
Fandomwire:
“The story that is yet to be told is that of the youngest*, Elain. This is why it would make sense for Sarah J. Maas to tell her story in her new book.”
Books of Brilliance:
“It’s not official what this new book will be about, but Maas hinted in a previous interview that she was planning on writing a book from the perspective of Feyre’s older sister, Elain Acheron.”
The Every Girl:
“Namely, book five is Feyre’s sister Nesta’s story, and there are rumors (pretty strong ones) that the next book in the series will be Feyre’s other sister’s [Elain’s] story.”
The Mary Sue:
“As for what this next book might be about, Maas has mentioned previously she wanted to focus on Feyre’s older sister Elain in an ACOTAR book.”
These are all the articles, blogs, exclusives, or opinion pieces that talk about who the next book is about that I could find. Now, before anyone gets on me about this, I am aware that these articles have varying levels of credibility and accuracy! If you want to take this with a grain of salt, go ahead.
Some of these articles also mention Nesta, Mor, and Amren but they also always mention Elain. Yet, the apparent “super obvious” Azriel book is never mentioned? In fact, Azriel is only ever mentioned alongside Elain.
So idk, if the author of a book states that she thought something was obvious, and then multiple news sites, blogs, exclusive interviews, opinion pieces, etc. all draw the same or similar conclusions on the topic, I would say that maybe there is some validity to that conclusion.

"Elain can't handle the cruel torturer of the NC because she abhors violence"
Wait... are we talking about Elain, Kingslayer? The sister who stabbed the King of Hybern and in turn, saved Prythian - that sister can't handle violence?
The sister who said "I hope they all burn in hell" to the mortal queens in ACOMAF... that sister can't handle violence?
The sister who time and time again, dealt with Nesta, understood what she was going through - that sister can't handle someone's darkness?
"Elain doesn't know about Azriel's darkness. Once she finds out what he does, she'll be disgusted"
Based on what? Azriel's thoughts in his POV?
Tumblr media
Personally, I interpreted this as another way SJM has shown us what low self-esteem Azriel has. He's essentially thinking there's no way Elain would've looked at him with such trust and hope if she knew what he did.
But I don't think that's the case, honestly. I think Elain is fully aware.
And again, if antis are going to say things like "Oh we don't have Elain's POV yet, so we don't know what her thoughts are yet, she could be deeply in love with Lucien" then I believe it's a fair statement to also say that "We don't have Elain's POV yet, she could be fully aware who Azriel is and what he does. And it doesn't matter to her either way."
Also not to mention the fact that Elain is literally a SEER. I think there's a very high chance she already knows all about Azriel's day job, and she does not care.
Elain is not a child. She isn't some ditsy airhead that doesn't know what is going on with the politics in her home and the true nature of the people closest to her. She's not a rebellious teenager sneaking around with Azriel just to "act out".
The people who claim Azriel and the IC are just infantilizing her are also the ones saying "they don't need to respect her, she's a fictional character", or "Elain doesn't know what she wants, she doesn't know what's best for her", or "she's not happy with her family and friends and home in Velaris", or "she secretly loves Lucien and is using Azriel to be rebellious". The same people are ignoring her wants, her needs, her desires, in favor of their own agenda. "Pro Elain" my ass 🙄

quick why is it always the people that reduce Elain’s arc to her being a flower needing the sun that go on to lecture us about how there’s more to her story than romance 🧍‍♂️
anyone who’s actually paid attention to her character would realize that there is a clear dichotomy between what people expect her to be and who she’s showing herself to be. it’s no coincidence that SJM emphasizes the former with very superficial statements (whom everyone and their mother pick up on & define her by), while weaving the latter into the actual fabric of her story.
it’s probably why they are so insistent on dismissing her friendship with Nuala & Cerridwen, who are said to know her better than Feyre does. or why her beauty in a dress is world-reckoning one second, while her radiant health in the city she calls home a chapter later is so dismissible. or why the only thing they remember from WaR is her need for sunshine, while conveniently leaving out that the one person who listened to her and spent time with her in the sunshine, enabled her to begin to distinguish dream from reality, elain’s mental health all the better for it.
she represses the parts of herself that would make her sisters uncomfortable & that she’s been conditioned to believe were undesirable, and hides her pain in fear to be a bother, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t know what’s best for her own life.
but yea apologies for recognizing that Elain needs only her light to bloom (canon), and for pointing out that while she is obviously not all happy & healed up & in love or whatever it is ppl think we are saying, her story won’t be about her realizing that everyone was right about her not belonging: it will be one of self-realization.
“well so and so says—” yea it’s almost like that’s the point idk what to tell u.
