Breck Bednar's Mum Enjoins Gamers to 'play Virtual Real, Live Real'
Breck Bednar's mom encourages gamers to "play virtual, but live the real"
12 January 2015
The mother of a 14-year old boy from Surrey who was killed by a teen he met through online gaming says she hopes that his story will result in better security on the internet for all.
Lewis Daynes killed Breck Bednar after luring him to Grays, Essex by the 19-year-old.
Lorin LaFave said: "I want Breck's story to show that there really is evil out there. Not everyone.
"But it only takes one person to cause the damage."
Lewis Daynes admitted murder and has been sentenced to life in prison.
Lorin of Caterham tells us that Breck and his companions would often have evenings of playing war games on a server that was set up by Daynes.
"When I would enter his room or walk by and listen I could hear the fascinating conversation and I could understand why they were interacting in this manner." Extreme mining
She began to worry that Daynes was exerting more influence on her son, and that his personality was changing.
"Breck was telling me that Daynes did not believe his computer should be on his desk. Daynes did not think that he was required to perform chores. Daynes did not believe that he should be expected to take part in family activities.
Lorin removed her son's computer and reported her concerns to the police.
'Manipulative behaviour'
"I explained to them about Daynes manipulative behaviour and that I believed he was grooming Breck. I explained, "I know there's a issue because he's changing Breck's behavior and beliefs."
She was unaware that the older teenager had given Breck a mobile phone to keep in contact.
She claims he would tell Breck about lucrative opportunities in the business world and promise in one email that they would work together and earn millions of pounds.
Lorin believes that the boys were impressed by the fake online persona Daynes had created for himself.
"For some reason, Breck was enticed to believe it. He wanted to be involved with someone who appeared to have influence, such an amount of money, and such knowledge. He was an instructor, I believe. They were looking up to him."
Daynes informed Breck that they must meet face to face to discuss business. Daynes booked a taxi to take Breck to his house. It was there that Breck was murdered.
The family has set up The Breck Bednar Memorial Foundation to try to promote responsible use of technology.
Their slogan is Play Virtual Live Real.
"The internet is a great tool, but instead of playing online with those friends, live real. Only meet up with people you know face-to-face in the real world. Breck did not live a real life. His reality was death due to the fact that Breck believed in a devilish person's lies."
She is aware that this is a message that young people need to hear . Breck had an online safety class a month prior to his murder, but she wants to make sure they don't forget it.
"If Breck were here he would be saying, 'Guys I wasn't too convinced There are dangerous people out there'. Unfortunately it took the toll of his life."
Imagine that the message is coming from Breck'
She wants young people think of Breck as the source of their safety message.
"What did he say to Daynes when he was being attacked by Daynes?" Did he think, "Wow, mom was right?" Did him think, "Wow, mum was right!" What was his thinking process? It was too late.
Ms LaFave wants the government to increase its investment in this area so that every parent is confident that they will receive a complete investigation in the event of any online concerns.
Daynes was scheduled to stand trial on murder charges, however, he pleaded guilty at the last minute. He will serve a minimum term of 25 years.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been referred to this case by the Essex and Surrey Police.
They will attempt to determine if any force could have done anything differently.
