Refusing to walk past the old sexist standards in medicine
When I was a third-year medical student in 2006, I was assigned to spend the day at a well-known women’s health clinic in Toronto. I walked into the procedure room and introduced myself to the attending. His first words to me were: “Are you married?” I replied that I wasn’t married, and he (while continuing

America’s inadequate LGBTQ medical education
As medical students, we are asked to learn in exquisite detail the ins and outs of rare diseases that we may never encounter in clinical practice. Yet the education we receive on caring for a population numbering in the millions is sorely lacking, and the health of those patients — the members of our communities

Non-medical transportation for postpartum moms is a necessity
This past June, California’s Department of Healthcare Services went live with the implementation of its non-medical transportation (NMT) benefit. NMT is described by the National Health Law Program as “transportation provided to access medically necessary services, which is provided by ordinary forms of transportation (public transportation, taxi, or any other forms of public or private

Do physicians have a right to be forgotten?
When we all lived in villages, knowing individual merchants allowed you to identify and avoid the cheats. As we urbanized, brand names became the reputational marker. But when you are dealing on the internet, where no one “knows you’re a dog,” what guarantee do you have? A case involving a Dutch physician who argued that

5 steps clinicians can take to get back to their patients
This article is sponsored by Careers by KevinMD.com. According to the 2018 Medscape National Physician Burnout Report, 42 percent of physicians are burned out. Of the doctors in that group, 56 percent place the blame squarely on the plethora of tasks they find themselves performing instead of being involved in actual patient care. Practicing medicine isn’t cutting

5 tips for interns tackling a busy schedule
The rotations on adult medicine and critical care are probably the most challenging ones for the residents doing internal medicine residency. No matter how much we try, we tend to feel overwhelmed, fatigued and swamped sometimes. As we progress into residency, we not only gain knowledge and clinical skills but also learn to tackle the

Inappropriate antibiotics are the new drugs of abuse
In my clinical practice, I have encountered patient aggression typically with narcotic medications, in particular with the refusal of a refill due to evidence of concerning behavior, like a positive drug screen for drugs not prescribed. Aggressive behavior can include yelling, threatening physical violence or intimidation. I have had less trouble with narcotic-related aggression nowadays

The 4 C’s of the disruptive digital health space
The United States spends more of their GDP on health care than any other developed nation, and yet it produces some of the poorest outcomes — notably in the field of maternal and infant health. The tip of the iatrogenic benzodiazepine iceberg
Life experience gives one an intimate appreciation for the meaning behind the saying “just the tip of the iceberg.” Everyone’s encountered something that turned out to be much larger and more complex than was initially understood. In my experience, medicine has yet to submerge its head underwater to discover the true depths of the sordid

A student doctor says, “Time’s Up”
According to the NASEM report, half of women medical students experience sexual harassment before they start their careers as physicians. The numbers are even higher for people belonging to minority groups. This harassment is generally overlooked and tolerated, and as injurious as it can be, these women often have to suck it up, keep it

Here’s why pediatricians ask about trauma and violence
As a behavioral pediatrician, I see children with behavior problems. Kids with aggression, kids who have been kicked out of multiple daycares or schools and kids who are not doing well at home or school. One of the things I always look for are clues as to why. Behaviors, while stressful, are not a diagnosis.

This residency interview season: Be the rebel
Ours is a chaotic and overburdened medical system. As a senior resident, there is every temptation to seek in our incoming classes more obedient interns and junior residents who would obey my orders as their senior without question. I challenge that we must do the harder thing. The explosive growth in the health care industry

Secrets of the Brain and Heart with Dr. James Doty
     Download MP3
We each possess an extraordinary power to realize our greatest potential and live the life we want. Dr. James Doty is living proof of that. Having grown up in an environment of poverty and neglect, James Doty was 12 years old when he walked into a magic shop and met an extraordinary woman who introduced him to a series of teachings that changed the trajectory of his life. He overcame great odds en route to becoming a renowned neurosurgeon, neuroscientist, and one of today’s leading voices on the power of love and compassion.
On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru, talks to Dr. James R. Doty, a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, and the founder and director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University of which His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the founding benefactor. He is also the New York Times best selling author of Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon’s Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Doty talk about how compassion and social connection have a powerful effect on our health, happiness, and well-being. They discuss inspiring teachings to help us master four central techniques: relaxing the body to become present and honor our highest values, training the brain through meditation and mindfulness, opening the heart to foster true connection, and clarifying our intentions as we navigate the journey of our lives.
In this episode, we dive into:
Dr. Doty’s story growing up with an alcoholic father and chronically depressed mother (3:18)
Adverse childhood experiences and how they affect the nervous system (6:33)
The first lesson from the Magic Shop – Relaxing the Body (9:28)
Why magic works (13:07)
Teaching kids how to regulate their emotions (17:53)
The second lesson from the Magic Shop – Taming the Mind – (21:11)
The heart-brain connection (32:00)
Heart rate variability and compassion (35:37)
How our diet affects our emotional state (37:44)
The third lesson from the Magic Shop – Opening the Heart (38:34)
How to cultivate compassion (48:20)
The Alphabet of the Heart exercise (51:17)
Learn more about Dr. Doty and his work (60:12)
I know you’ll love this episode of The Broken Brain Podcast as much as I did.
Wishing you health and happiness, Mark Hyman, MD

How social media can advance humanism in medicine
“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.” – Abraham Maslow. The New York Times recently published the op-ed “Dr. Google is a Liar,” written by cardiologist Haider Warraich, MD. Dr. Warraich describes the rise of fake medical news and the adverse consequences of a
