He cannot say "I love you," but he remembers every single one of her coffee orders and when she prefers which one. He knows when to bring her breakfast in the morning and always makes sure the coffee is still hot when he gives it to her. He knows she wouldn't buy two blueberry muffins for herself, but she will eat them both if it's him offering them to her.
He cannot say "I love you," but he lets her sleep in the car even when they're on a stakeout. He covers her with his coat and takes care to stay quiet. Whenever he dares to, he will tuck any stray strands of hair behind her ear and brush his knuckles over her cheekbone just because.
He cannot say "I love you," but he takes her hands when they're cold and clings to every word spilling from her lips. He keeps her favourite ice cream in his freezer and turns up the heating—even if it means he's too warm—as long as she is comfortable.
He doesn't say "I love you," yet there are pads and tampons in his bathroom, his desk drawer, in his suitcase, and he never runs out of ibuprofen. He has a hair brush in their office and hair ties that keep showing up everywhere, including rental cars and motel rooms. Even though her hair is rarely long enough, Mulder still knows how to braid.
He doesn't say "I love you," and he keeps quiet when she steals one of his shirts and never returns it. Conditioner and flower-scented body wash mysteriously appeared in his shower after she stayed over one late night and complained about his 4-in-one shower product. He buys a heating pad and knows that red wine gives her headaches, so he only ever orders white for her. There is a nail file in his coat pocket and a pair of fuzzy socks at the bottom of his suitcase.
Mulder never tells her, "I love you," but he holds open doors and guides her down hallways with his hand on her lower back. He knows the feeling of her face against his palms and the weight of her in his arms; he knows when to take her hand on a flight and never complains, no matter how hard she squeezes. He never listens to anyone, but he listens to her. He trusts no one—not even himself—but he trusts her.
Mulder never says, "I love you," but Scully knows and always has.
She never asks him to say it. Instead, she takes his hand and smiles, she presses a kiss to his forehead and fits herself against his chest.
It's a truth they do not need to look for, it's everywhere and nowhere, and she takes the coffee he offers her with a thank you, getting a you're welcome in return.
They both know it's not about the coffee.

But you saved me! As difficult and as frustrating as it's been sometimes, your goddamned strict rationalism and science have saved me a thousand times over! You've kept me honest.
or: I don't know where I would be without you today. And I never want to find out where I'd end up without you. I didn't know what it was like to have someone who cared. I didn't know. You keep me going, you keep me fighting. Don't you know how important you are to me? The world has solidity because you make it that way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You've made me a whole person.
or: I can't imagine not having you in my life. I don't want to. It's you and me, always, together. I didn't know I could love anyone this much, but I do, I do. I see your face when I close my eyes and I wake up with your name on my lips. Sometimes I miss you when you're on the opposite side of the room. I was all alone and I thought I was okay. That was before I knew you existed.
Tumblr media
I owe you everything . . . Scully, and you owe me nothing. I don't know if I wanna do this alone. I don't even know if I can.
or: I'd go to the ends of the Earth for you. There is nothing that I wouldn't do. Please believe me. Out of any of the wild things I've ever said, this is the one I need you to believe the most: you keep me believing that this world is worth saving. Ever since you told me aliens don't exist five minutes after we met, I've needed you. As my partner, as my friend, as the only one I trust. Please understand what I'm saying. I have nothing to give you except for myself, and you can have me, all of me.

It is entirely possible that they had sex for the first time after the Millennium kiss.
It is also possible that they went home together to her place or to his, and just made out until they were too tired to keep going. Smiling into kisses, hands roaming, over each other's hair, shoulders, backs. Pulling back to look at each other, just look, eyes full of awe and gratitude and happiness. And . . . love? Quickly diving back in for another kiss because that is a big word, such a big word, and too much too soon, but unsaid is not unfelt.
Something has changed, but not changed; it's not any different than it was before. It's not more than it was before. It's just the difference between knowing and knowing. Between feeling something and putting a name to it. The ground doesn't shift, there is no earthquake, no lightning, no fireworks except the ones outside their window. There is only them.
Only them, hands finding each other, his fingers soft against her cheek, her palm warm against the back of his neck. Time and space can do without them for the night, the world is turning like it always has, and they're sharing each other's warmth, breathing each other's air. Adding vocabulary to the silent language they've been speaking to each other for years: touch. Now more than his hand on her back or her shoulder against his. There is so much to say, and they are saying it, not all of it, but enough for now; through touch, through looks. It's not a new story, just a new chapter. They fall asleep before they can add the next one, but there's time. The world didn't end, after all.

no cause Mulder was alone in that basement office for a while, maybe even two to three years depending on when exactly Diana left him.
there was no one to talk to, no one to keep him company, no one visiting him, no one wanting anything to do with him outside of making fun of him or trying to shut him down.
the days he must have spent without saying a single word out loud. Mulder must have been so fucking lonely during that time.
then—Scully.
he does his research on her, he reads her thesis and memorizes it to the point where he can quote it back to her word for word years later, all the while telling himself she will be a spy and nothing else.
and yet.
she walked into his office with bright eyes and an even brighter smile, and suddenly there was light everywhere. another person living and breathing beside him, someone to talk to and joke with, someone who didn't look at him with pity or mockery.
someone who made his mission their mission, someone who told him she wants to find out the truth, no matter what it ends up being, someone who didn't ridicule his theories and explanations.
someone who stepped in front of him to defend him and held people at gunpoint to get him back, to make sure he's safe. someone whom he can touch, someone who will reciprocate his bids for attention and affection, someone who runs her hands through his hair and offers comfort even when he doesn't know how to ask for it; especially when he doesn't know how to ask for it.
suddenly, Mulder was wanted, and he couldn't help but want her in return.
for the very first time in his life, someone saw him and did not leave.

Do you think after her abduction (and subsequent return), Mulder took some pictures of her under the guise of playing around with a Polaroid camera?
Because he realised, down alone in the basement again, that he doesn't have a single picture of her smiling? And he remembers, god, of course he remembers, but there's a seed of fear growing in his chest.
What if he forgets? What if he forgets the exact way her eyes crinkle when she laughs at one of his stupid jokes? What if he forgets how she tilts her head when she tries to hide a smile? the shape of her lips? The way the sunlight sets her hair on fire and illuminates her freckles?
He remembers now, but what if she doesn't come back and he forgets? What if she comes back and turns her back on the X files for good?
What if he spends the rest of his life trying to burn the image of Scully in the light of the projector—long hair, an oversized blazer, a spy, someone to distrust, someone already splitting him open—into his mind?
She comes back, she stays, and he is still looking at her like she is going to disappear again the second he stops.
So he starts taking pictures. Scully preoccupied with a case file, one heel kicked off so she could fold her leg underneath her, her hair falling into her face, and he is grabbing the camera from the top drawer before he can stop himself. She blinks and looks over at him, trying to be upset and failing, and he takes another one of her smiling at him.
Mulder, and her voice is soft around the edges; she doesn't say anything else. He keeps the pictures, half expecting her to steal them when he isn't there, yet she never does.
Scully leaning against the desk with her arms crossed, Scully in the light of the projector, Scully writing, typing, sorting, drinking coffee early in the morning. On one memorable occasion, she dozes off, her face turned towards him, and when he takes the pictures after draping his coat over her shoulders, he leaves it on the desk for her to find.
Keep it, as she hands it back to him, and they never talk about it. Then he almost dies, and she empties out a drawer for herself; he doesn't mind having a camera pointed at his face when it's her holding it.
They never talk about it, but it's something. Something solid, something to hold onto, something to soothe the concern bleeding within both of them.
They take pictures.
Just because. Just in case. Just to make sure they cannot disappear, no matter what.

trust: not just "I know you would never betray me"
more: "this is what I believe, this is my opinion, and I'm telling you not because I think you will agree, but because I won't mind it if you don't. because I know you won't think less of me for it."
trust: not just "if I'm in danger, I know you will always have my back"
more: "here is a key to my apartment. yes, it's convenient. yes, it's for emergencies. no, I would never give it to anyone else. use it whenever you want."
trust: not just "I will tell you my secrets and I know you will keep them safe"
more: "I know you will look deeper than that, and I want to let you in. I want you to know me. because you will try to understand. you will listen. and you'll stay."
trust: not just "I know you won't abandon me when I need you"
more, so much more. it's your hand in mine. it's your feet up on my coffee table and your dirty sweater mixed in with my laundry after you spilled juice on it during our last movie night. it's calling you at 2am because I know one word from me and you'll grab your car keys, as I do every time you call me with the weight of the world in your voice. I'll look at you with my heart in my eyes and know you won't run. I can reach for you without stretching out one arm and you will reach back. I will let myself fall and not be embarrassed; you accepted my weakness before I did, and you never expect me to cover up the cracks in me with a fresh coat of paint every time they show themselves.
trust: because you don't expect me to change. because you are honest with me. because I can see your heart in your eyes too when you look at me, and you give me no other choice but to believe you. so let me fall asleep on your motel bed after working all night. argue with me. I can see my favorite blend of coffee in your cupboard.
I am not afraid to be known by you. so please come in. the place is a mess, but you tell me not to apologize. I'm trying. because I know you mean it. I believe you. like I have never believed anyone else.

There is something about the way Mulder learns to accept and seek out emotional support and comfort throughout the course of the seasons. With all the casual physical contact that they have going on from the beginning, he seems ready to reach out, but doesn't seem to expect others to do the same. He feels deeply, but he keeps it to himself; something he seems to have learned from an early age. He's had to build his life around other people's pain since his sister disappered. He doesn't want to burden others with his needs.
Scully's "I wouldn't put myself on the line for anybody but you" in "Tooms" is met with a joke immediately to lighten the mood -- a flirty joke, but still. He doesn't think he deserves how much she cares about him. Caring is his job. It's everyone else's job to disregard and dismiss his feelings and not take him seriously.
Scully setting up their secret meeting in "Little Green Men" -- he seems almost a little confused that she really just wanted to see him. He doesn't react when the touches his hair before she leaves. He doesn't react when she briefly takes his hand at the end. I don't think those little gestures of comfort don't register with him. They do. He simply doesn't quite know how to respond to them. He doesn't hesitate to gently cup her cheek and offer comfort when she wants to come back to work after her father's death. But he would never expect her to do that for him.
In "Anasazi" when he says "Thank you for taking care of me," it seems like he has to think about that sentence for a long time. Not because he isn't grateful, but because he doesn't really understand why she did it. Nothing more embarrassing than thanking someone and hearing "Oh, I didn't do it for you." And he said some pretty rude things to her when he was drugged, accusing her of betraying him. Who knows how much of it he remembers, but apparently enough to feel mortified. He never wanted to hurt her, but he must have, and then, after all that, she saved him and risked so much for him?
The scene in "Detour" comes to mind, the night in the forest when she tries to pull his head into her lap so he can get some rest and so that she can keep him warm, and he jokes "I don't want to wrestle." She doesn't have to do this, he's fine. He's not being a manly man who doesn't need anything, it's just that she's offering something that's hard to accept for him. She offers him a place to let go and stop pushing on. And he doesn't think she needs to do that, he is not fatally injured or anything, he'll be fine. But she wants him to be comfortable. She sees him, and is there for him.
At his mother's hospital bed in "Herrenvolk," she reaches for him and he lets himself cry into her shoulder. It's not just an emotional scene because of what he's going through. It's that he's allowing himself to truly let himself go in front of her. She reaches for him and he gives in and leans his face against her shoulder, holds onto her, letting her hold him. Letting her hold him. That's the really crucial point. Who has ever done that for him before? Who has ever allowed him his pain and told him it's okay, I know you have to feel like this right now, I know you're hurting, and I will be your tether for as long as you have to lose yourself in this?
"Sein und Zeit" -- he clings to her so tightly, lets her be his lifeline in this moment, as he knows she wants to be that for him. Letting go like that is so, so scary. There is always the fear that it will change someone's opinion of you. Make them think you're weak. Let them know what gets to you, and then you will always always always have to deal with them looking at you trying to asses how okay you are in stressful situations. It leaves you wide open and vulnerable. Learning that she doesn't expect him to be strong, that she doesn't believe that things don't affect him, that's a new concept. It requires so much trust.
Being able to take an offered hand is really fucking difficult, especially when you've been conditioned to be the one doing the reaching out. Leaning on someone is terrifying. Some patterns are hard to unlearn. But her steady presence finally allows him to show weakness and trust her to catch him when he falls. It lets him understand that he's allowed to fall sometimes.

by episode three scully is already threatening to ruin people's careers if they keep being rude to mulder and holding government employees at gunpoint, so i think she gets really fucking good at collecting blackmail material over time.
oh, you called mulder "spooky" while they walked by? better be ready to explain to your superior why you got drunk on duty during a stakeout last week.
you are whispering about how he's a waste of bureau money during a meeting? have a fun time justifying the hooker that is suddenly on your expense report.
you attempted to keep mulder from accessing a crime scene? enjoy the written formal complaint in your personnel file.
did you make any sort of negative sexual comment about mulder and/or their relationship? there are now five different agents in HR filing sexual harassment reports against you.
if she doesn't already have something on someone, it takes her about one hour and a cup of coffee to find something highly incriminating.
whether that's a married guy having an affair (and his wife accidentally receiving enough evidence to file for a divorce by an anonymous source) or a documented abuse of power (skipping a line at the coffee shop? getting out of a speeding or parking ticket? literally anything else? she will find it).
hurt mulder and scully can and will ruin your life and/or career.
fuck around and you WILL find out.

This moment in "Irrestible." She told him she's fine. He told her "If you're having trouble with this case, Scully, I want you to tell me." He told her "I just don't want you to think you have to hide anything from me." Back in Washington, she told Kosseff "I don't want him to know how much this is bothering me. I don't want him to think he has to protect me." This moment is such a turning point. She's not fine. She has to let herself need something for once. He offers, and she takes.
His fingers gently lifting up her chin, that is him repeating his earlier message: I just don't want you to think you have to hide anything from me. And her response isn't "I'm fine," this time. She has been through so much. Her responses aren't calculated. In this moment of vulnerability, she steps into him and accepts what he wants to give her. Partnership and support. Friendship. This isn't even about love. This is about needing something and trusting someone not to use it against you.
She does not have to hug him. She could turn away, walk away, try to hide how not okay she is. And if he were anyone else, she would walk away. But it's him. He's a safe place for her. And I believe if he had pushed her more, had tried to get her to admit how much this was getting to her, this hug wouldn't have happened. But she can lean on him now because he respected it when she wouldn't.
None of this is conscious, she's not weighing pros and cons in her head. This is instinctual. This is emotion overriding rationality. This is a very human response to something that shook her to her core. This is unfiltered. And when her walls can't stay in place, he invites her into his instead and she steps inside. And that is really, really big.

Headcanon that Mulder and Scully do end up attending a team building seminar at some point and are forced to compete in a three-legged race, and they absolutely wipe the floor with their competition (because they practically walk like that on a regular basis, right? no such thing as personal space, they're already attached at the hip)

It's "ice queen" until they're waiting in front of Skinner's office and Mulder makes her laugh so hard she has to half-bury her face in his shoulder to keep it contained. Until she is breathlessly blushing and whispering something that makes him bend over in return. It's the first time any of the agents passing by have heard her laugh.
It's "ice queen" until Mulder brings her a hot coffee and her favourite kind of muffin for an early meeting, and her smile could melt glass. Until a room full of accountants watches them pass the paper cup back and forth without even looking, spilling not a single drop. Until she gives him an undecipherable look and Mulder comes back after their ten-minute break with yet another one to share. Until she leans in like she is going to kiss him before simply bumping her shoulder against his, her lips parted and her cheeks flushed.
It's "annoying" and "insufferable" until Mulder almost trips over his own feet while clinging to every single word spilling from her lips. Until he walks straight into Skinner because he was looking at her and only her. Until he listens to Scully and Scully only, until he silences people with a glare when they interrupt her during meetings, until he starts introducing her as Dr. Special Agent Scully, daring anyone to contradict him or drop an honorific.
It's "ice queen" until Mulder gets injured, and she refuses to leave his side even as they make their way through the crowded building. It's just a hair fracture, Scully, and she almost shoves someone into a doorway to make space for him. Your ankle is broken. Hair fracture. Broken.
It's "prudish" and "prissy" until people occasionally catch them in an empty corridor, watching as Mulder wipes away dark red smudges from the corners of her mouth while the same colour is smeared across his lips. Until there is enough visible adoration in the way their hands brush together that it makes any bystander blush.
It's "standoffish," "uptight," and "unapproachable" until they are no longer in the basement, and no matter how hard she might try, she cannot hide the person she is around Mulder. Until she drags her chair towards his desk more days than not, until they move in sync, sit down in sync, breathe in sync, and they both don't seem to be what everyone else always imagined.
Soft. Warm. Loving. In love.
Scully smiles at Mulder like he's her whole world, and he smiles back like she hung every single moon and star into the sky.
It's "Mr. and Mrs. Spooky" from their very first case right up until the day a ring is glinting on Mulder's finger and another one on a thin gold band around Scully's neck, resting above her heart.

I was going to do a complete season 1 review for the rewatch, but instead I did a close reading of this scene from 1x24 The Erlenmeyer Flask, because I can’t get it out of my head, I love it so much.
Scully: Wait a second. Mulder? I just want to say that I was wrong. Mulder: It's all right, don't worry about it. Scully: No, um, if you'd had listened to me, we wouldn't be here right now. I should know by now to trust your instincts. Mulder: Why? Nobody else does. Scully: You know, I've always held science as sacred. I've always put my trust in the accepted facts. And what I saw last night . . . for the first time in my life, I don't know what to believe. Mulder: Well, whatever it is you do believe, Scully, when you walk into that room? Nothing sacred will hold.
This is a big moment for various reasons. It’s a defining moment for their partnership. This is almost a summary of the season.
Possibly the biggest thing for their partnership is her admitting she was wrong and Mulder’s reaction to it. We don’t know this, but from all the context we have of his life at this point, it’s safe to assume that Mulder doesn’t get apologies very often. “I just want to say that I was wrong.” It’s important to her to let him know that. And that alone says something about the way she sees him. He’s generally seen as crazy and paranoid. But not by her. More than that, she sees him as a person with feelings that can be hurt, and she wants to make sure he knows that wasn’t her intention. “I should know by now to trust your instincts,” that is a huge thing to say and has to be something that needs a minute to sink in for him. She trusts him. Which is something he knows already to an extent, but to hear it said that openly after how vehemently they disagreed on this is a different thing.
In that context it’s worth looking at their exchange after visiting Doctor Berube. She tells him: “I mean, this has reached the point of absurdity, Mulder. We're out here on half a hunch off of a cryptic phone call chasing down a clue that's based on nothing but speculation.” She voices her mistrust of Deep Throat and Mulder asks her “You think he does it because he gets off on it?” To which she replies: “No. I think he does it because you do.” And then she walks off, effectively ending that argument, she doesn’t have anything more to say. She’s made her point. And to come back from that the way they do in this scene, that is a real testament to how much respect they have for each other. Yeah, he was right. And yeah, he gets that she has to ask the uncomfortable questions.
Just the fact alone that she thinks he deserves an apology is a lot; she doubted him and she’s sorry for that because she knows he’s not crazy. They’re partners and they work as partners. She’s not there with him right now because he asked her. She’s there because she genuinely wants to be and genuinely believes that his explanations of the facts hold value and that she takes them seriously. And nobody ever takes him seriously. He points that out to her right away.
In fact, his whole interaction with her in this scene shows a vulnerability that needs the context of the rest of the season to be fully understood. He could say all of these things to anybody else, word for word, and it would simply be the equivalent of a shrug and a “fine, let’s move on.” But with everything they have been through and with the way we’ve seen them opening up to each other, this means something very different.“It's alright, don't worry about it.” I mean. Shit. The thing is, it probably is alright on the surface. It is a way to shrug it off. Not being taken seriously has to hurt, but he’s used to it, so really, she shouldn’t worry about it, she’s there now and that’s all that matters. But it’s not all that matters to her.
His reaction to her telling him that she should know to trust his instincts? “Why? Nobody else does.” The way he says this, it doesn’t sound like he’s testing her. It sounds a little bitter, but that bitterness is not directed at her. After years of being at best ignored, more often ridiculed, of course he doesn’t have a more positive reaction to something like this at hand. But I don’t think there can be any doubt that it means something to him. She smiles after he says this, and that also says something: she doesn’t count herself among the people who dismiss him and she gets that he’s not dismissing her. She sees the self-deprecating humor in his response. She also hears the “thank you for not being one of them” in his response. His face stays sincere. He isn’t challenging her, but he needs to know why she’s sticking around. It’s such a loaded response. You can hear a lot of things in it if you want, which makes it such a well-written exchange: he is a little confused as to why she’s sticking around, he’s thanking her for being there, he’s bitter about and/or used to nobody believing him, I mean, hell, it isn’t even impossible to find a flirty note in there. In any case, he’s downplaying her apology not because he doesn’t appreciate it, but because he didn’t see it coming since most likely nobody has ever bothered or seen the need before. At the same time, he’s telling her he trusts her too.
Scully has had her beliefs challenged, and she shows right here and right now how much of a scientist she really is. She is ready to admit that one theory hasn’t worked, so she is prepared to examine a different one that looks more promising. This is one of her core traits: she never clings to her theories out of some sense of vanity. She doesn’t have to be right. She just wants to understand, and she needs facts to do so. Poking holes in things is part of science, to see how well it holds up. It’s about getting as close to the truth as they can. And with the evidence to support Mulder’s arguments, she can be convinced to have a closer look at his theory. She says: “I've always held science as sacred. I've always put my trust in the accepted facts.” And that’s what is being challenged here. This is seriously stretching the boundaries of what she accepted to be fact. But she doesn’t stubbornly cling to what she believes. It’s a process, and she respects that as much as he does. Their arguing is never just for the sake of it.
Scully says: “For the first time in my life, I don't know what to believe.” How big is that? But this is something that reiterates and reinforces something we have seen throughout the season again and again: they trust each other. She isn’t afraid to admit her insecurity to him. They’re faced with something she can’t wrap her head around, when knowing things is kind of her job? She makes herself very vulnerable with this statement. His response picks up on that and tells her she’s right to question everything: “Well, whatever it is you do believe, Scully, when you walk into that room? Nothing sacred will hold.” He’s telling her it’s okay, it is all a bit hard to believe. He’s well aware of that. This is not trying to convince somebody to try mayo instead of ketchup with their fries. This is about the fundamentals of her worldview. He does not expect her to be convinced. He is sure she will be impressed. But he accepts her doubt, he always does. “Whatever it is you do believe.” No pressure, but here’s a cool thing that will definitely give you some answers. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen, but that’s a different story.
This little conversation between them is such a pivotal moment. It truly shows who they have become individually and as partners. It wraps up the season very nicely and at the same time cements the foundation of their partnership for season two. Because they can have a conversation like this one and understand what the other one is saying, their pining after each other at the beginning of the next season makes sense. They’ve become very important to each other, they show each other their vulnerable sides, they take care of each other. This little conversation sums that up perfectly.

Mulder truly is the male character of all time. He's a whore. He's repressed. He almost dies more times that I can count on one hand. He gets into physical fights with his boss. He believes in aliens. He's right about the aliens. Scully holds him on her lap and strokes his back once. He wears a kickass coat. His first name is Fox, for God's sake.

Jedi June 2024
Tumblr media
A creative fandom event dedicated to appreciating the Jedi, taking place during the entire month of June! Each week will feature two prompts, around which people can create fanwork (of any kind – fic, art, cosplay, edits, anything you can think of) or meta focusing on the Jedi and the Jedi Order. All eras and continuities are welcome; OCs, established characters, doesn’t matter – it just needs to be about appreciating the Jedi!
Rules:
If you are participating, please tag your work/meta with #jedi june and/or @ this blog so that I will see it and reblog it here. All work must be your own. Feel free to crosspost it off-site.
This is an appreciation event, focusing on what we love and enjoy about the Jedi – not what we don’t. This is not the place to air your grievances with the Code, take potshots at the Council, prop certain Jedi/certain eras of Jedi up at the expense of others, or disparage the Jedi Order or their philosophy (including the concept of non-attachment) and way of life in any way. You are free to do that on your own time if that’s your thing, but it has no place within this event.
AUs and crossovers are allowed, with caveats: again, the purpose of this event is to appreciate the Jedi as Jedi, so sticking your favorite Jedi characters in something like a modern AU or making them all Sith or Mandalorian is not really within the spirit of this event. However, AUs such as making a non-Jedi character a Jedi, having a character survive their canon death, giving a character a different teacher or padawan, or killing Palpatine off-screen in an unspecified yet embarrassing and painful manner, would all be perfectly fine. Use your best judgement to determine whether an AU fits the spirit of the event or not.
Ships are allowed as long as they’re not between a child and adult, and following the above rules.
Please tag any spoilers up to two weeks after the relevant content has aired.
Following the prompts is encouraged, but not required. Any sort of pro-Jedi content is encouraged all year month long, and if tagged (and following the rules), will be reblogged.
We also have an AO3 collection!
Prompts:
Week 1 (June 2 - 8):
Prompt 1: Fun/Joy
Prompt 2: Comfort
Week 2 (June 9 - 15):
Prompt 1: Advice/Inspiration
Prompt 2: Balance
Week 3 (June 16 - 22):
Prompt 1: Art/Music
Prompt 2: Peace
Week 4 (June 23 - 29):

It gets talked about a lot but I still can't stop nerding out about Link's characterization in TotK. It's done through his many creative dialogue choices and his expressions of course, but it's also done so subtly through what he *doesn't* say. Notably, he doesn't talk about himself. And this is why nobody recognizes him unless they've already met him. Because he doesn't tell them when they've got the wrong impression of him.
The meme about Link having Tony Hawk syndrome is so real. People will look at him and straight up say, "Wow, you look exactly like Link!" without a hint of irony. Lookout Landing has a detailed picture of his face in their watchtower and the search party still doesn't recognize him. Penn works with Link for a long time and thinks he's unlucky that the Yiga keep "mistaking" him for the Hero (granted, Traysi asked him to deliberately keep quiet, but Penn still didn't put two and two together himself). I think the reason for this, aside from it being really, really funny, is that Link just doesn't talk about himself. He doesn't feel the need to.
Characterization isn't just about what we see a character doing, it's also about how other characters respond to them. Link is so unassuming and humble that he doesn't match people's expectations of what "Link" should be like. The three Gerudo ladies hanging out around Outskirt Stable are one of many perfect examples. Link stands in front of them carrying the Master Sword, but they expect the Hero to be taller than they are, with a giant glowing sword, so they don’t believe it's him. Obviously that's not the reality, but they don't know that. Link doesn't correct them, either. Again, he doesn't feel the need to.
This is also why many NPCs from BotW don't recognize or remember Link. To them, he was just a passerby that did them a good turn once 6+ years ago. Nobody's going to remember a person like that for so long after. They had no way of knowing he was the Hero, unless it came up for story quest reasons. When they hear stories about the Princess's Appointed Knight who woke up from his 100 year nap, defeated the Calamity, and rescued Zelda, they imagine someone larger than life. Then when they see what Link actually is like, they can't put two and two together.
This is true even during the Hyrule Restoration efforts. Link always follows behind Zelda as her shadow, which she notes in her diary, but the people in the stable investigation quests and in Hateno don't recognize him either, even though he went everywhere she did. Link is just that unassuming. He resigns himself to being a shadow, allowing Zelda to take the lead and do as she pleases but always staying nearby to support and protect her. He doesn't need to be recognizable to do his job. And we know from both BotW and now TotK that he's wholly devoted to her. He's content with this. Many people more eloquent than I have spent many paragraphs elaborating on this. I just wanted to focus on what it says about his character.
Link is humble and unassuming, so much so that nobody believes that he's the Hero unless they already know him. He's devoted to Zelda, so much so that he's willing to do anything to chase even a glimpse of her. He doesn't talk about himself or correct people who have the wrong impression of him. He doesn't need to do that to chase his Zelda. He is a person of great humility in spite of his station. I think that's so interesting and neat how the comedy of him being unrecognizable also tells us all this about him. It's also cool how this is only one aspect of him; all the dialogue choices and expressions he makes during cutscenes and actions out in the world show a whole other, lighter side to him that meshes with this. It's all so good. I am in love with it. It always kills me inside when people dismiss his characterization as being nonexistant or flat just because it's not spoonfed to them or when they say Link being unrecognizable is lazy writing instead of a deliberate choice. I am biting and gnawing and gnashing over him and his relationship to Zelda. I love them so much.

scully lying on mulder’s hotel bed season 1 episode 1 after showing up half naked all prepared to pull some “i’m scared can you hold me” bullshit in order to book a last minute dick appointment but instead she spends 3 hours listening to this hot but weird ass man talk unprompted about his childhood trauma and how the whole entire us government is committing war crimes against him specifically meanwhile she’s starting to realize she may have slightly utterly committed career suicide
