Grad602 Unwind + Portfolio Reflection
Overall, I'm super happy with how the project turned out. Because the formative assessment ended up doing quite well, the process for the summative wasn't too much work.
Since the team was still working together on the packaging prototype (laser cutting etc.) it was a big part of the project sorted pretty early on. I ended up not being too stressed with the making of it and I was able to focus a lot on the design of not just the package but the ad and the brochure. I honestly did not have to change too much as I was pretty satisfied with a lot of the design already. I just updated the design to fit my style and simplified a lot of the elements so that it was more cohesive.
One thing I wish I had more time on is the ad. I feel like it's not 100% finished. I wanted to create the actual animation itself but I didn't have a lot of time left so I decided to just keep it as a static image. I want to make this a project for the summer because I think it would be a good idea to add to my portfolio but also it would be good to keep up with those skills.
Speaking of my portfolio, I definitely think I could add more to it. I was originally going to add some collage pieces to it but I, unfortunately, ran out of time and wasn't able to create those in time. But because it is my portfolio, I'll be able to add to it and make it more me.
I think I was quite organised during the whole project (mainly for Unwind), which is something that I'm not particularly good at, so it was a real turning point for me. I felt quite motivated to do the work and was in a good place creatively so it was easy for me to get into it.
I want to keep working on my portfolio. I have some ideas on how to improve the portfolio itself like adding some imagery/illustration possibly. I also plan on updating uni projects during the summer that I wasn't satisfied with so I feel more comfortable putting them in my portfolio. It also keeps me busy and allows me to work on my skills for the next couple of months.

Grad602 Final Prototype + Leave-Behind
Final Prototype
This is the final prototype with the packaging design and everything. I decided to keep it nice and simple as this is going to be something that hangs up in people's homes. In order to have it be something memorable in the store as well as neutral enough to place around the house, I kept most of the information design around the sleeve.
I also wanted to make sure that I had a picture of what it looked like with a plant inside it so everyone has an idea of how the product is used in real life.
Leave-Behind Design System
I decided to update the design system of my leave-behind book as I wanted it to fit the style that I ended up with.
I wanted to add a page number as well as the area the page focused on. For example for the logo page, I put it under brand style + design system. I wanted to keep it fairly simple so it doesn't look too different from the original version. I also wanted to have it look appropriate to show outside of a uni environment.
I think it ended up looking pretty good and I'm pretty happy with the layout of each page.

Grad602 Final Packaging
Dieline
This is the final dieline with all the measurements, cutlines and crease lines. I updated it from the last version as all the measurements have changed slightly. I also put the design onto the dieline so that the whole packaging system is shown.
Final Packaging Design/Cutouts
These are the final cutouts for the cover design of the packaging. I printed these out and then pasted them all using collage glue onto their respective pieces. I then glued each individual piece together using PVA glue.
Final String
For the string, I ended up using this macrame string which is 4mm wide. I thought this was the perfect size as it isn't too thick that it wouldn't fit inside the package but it also wasn't too thin that it would likely break if it had too much pressure on it.
The final package has 8m of string in total. Each individual pot has 4m each as each individual string is 1m long.
I also used this tutorial to figure out how to do the hook.

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of me actually creating the prototype. I had completely forgotten to do so after being completely in the zone during the whole process. It took me about 4 hours just because of having to wait for the glue to properly set in between each round. But overall it was fairly easy to create.
Cylinder Sides: I had to glue the side tabs together. I also had to glue the bottom tabs to the outside cylinder bases.
String: For the string, I frayed the bottom half of the string about 3cm high. I then glued this down to the outside cylinder base and then to keep it secure I placed the inside cylinder base on top of it. This also hides away the glued string and makes placing the plant inside the pot much easier.

Grad602 Portfolio Final Design
These are some of the most important pages in my portfolio and their final design. I, unfortunately, ran out of time and was going to add some small collage pieces to the cover and about me pages to give them more life. This is something I plan to add later on before I apply for jobs. I think this would add some uniqueness to my portfolio and make it more memorable.
Cover -> I wanted to have an example of both a serif and a sans serif on the cover. I chose these typefaces because I thought they looked good together and I really like them individually. I wanted to make sure that the year was put on there so I'll remember to update my portfolio every year with better projects.
About Me -> I didn't want to have about me on this page as I thought it would be boring and overseen so I decided to come up with a more concise description of me - practical dreamer. I thought it would be appropriate to have stars placed around the page as this correlates with the "dreamer" aspect of me. The stars are actually the Astrix symbol * which relates back to the "practical" side of me.
Project Page -> I wanted to keep these pages simple and straight to the point. I wanted the image to stand out which is why it doesn't follow the margin and extends to fit towards the edge of the page. This is just one example and the other pages have examples of the images placed inside the margin. I wanted to have a variety of different ways I could place the image as I think it makes sense for each page to fit the project dimensions.
CV Page -> This page was definitely the hardest to figure out. It was hard to figure out where each element should go. I think I still need to work on it but this is the layout I settled on.

Grad602 Advertising Design
This is the final TikTok ad. The ad is supposed to bring people to want to buy "Unwind" as a way to bring relaxation in their stressful lives.
I decided to put in the brand illustrations which I think makes it look much better. I also decided to show a little bit of how the ad will run. So it's an animated ad which will slide up the whole time. In the actual ad, all the illustrations will move around slightly so it's less static and more interesting to look at.
The first illustration is supposed to illustrate a fast-paced lifestyle which then is replaced with a more relaxing nature-filled view as the ad goes on.

Grad602 Brochure Design
This is my brochure idea. So it's going to be separated into 6 squares. Each square apart from the front cover will be a tip. The size of the brochure is going to be fairly small as it has to fit inside the package.
Final Design
I wanted the design to be super simple as I think this fits the simple look the brand is going for. I also decided to use these illustrations as they fit the rest of the brand illustrations.
I wanted to keep the colours to be super simple and not too overpowering which is why I only have 4 of the colours from the colour system in the brochure. I also decided to have these illustrations overlayed in the background to add some texture to the brochures.

Grad602 Week 12/02
#1 Advertising Iteration
This is the first iteration of my TikTok ad. I wanted it to bring people in by asking them a question. This will hopefully appeal to or relate to them which will then hopefully make them want to buy the product.
Notes -> David then told me I could easily condense the first three shots so that it's a little more succinct.
#2 Advertising Iteration
In this iteration, I decided to take David's advice and shorten the question to just "stressed?" that way the viewer is immediately told the question. I also thought it would be nice to have the product come in between "unwind" as it gives it more interest and makes it look more animated.
Notes -> Akifa told me it would be a good idea to bring in the illustrations to the ad so that it would become more familiar to consumers. This way the branding feels more complete in the ad.
Packaging Design
This is the final packaging design. I managed to print everything out today and I love how the final colours ended up looking together. The only thing is that for the final prototype, I'm going to have to print the design without the black lines so that it won't be seen in the final package.

Grad602 Week 12/01
In this class, I decided to do the portfolio and ad workshop because these are the two areas that I need the most work on.
Updated Portfolio + Akifa's Notes
I don't think this particular design works very well but I do want to stick with the stars possibly. I think the colours are too much I want to go with something a lot simpler, maybe even black and white?
I just need to add more to my graphic design style and what I like doing/my strengths -> everything else is good :)
Ad Ideas -> David's Notes -> What I could do
I definitely want to stick with the TikTok ad and focus on that for my advertising. I think I want to go with something more conceptual so less instructional and more of a way to get people to want to buy the product.

Grad602 Week 11/Prototype Making
This week we ended up finishing our prototype base. Since we wanted to have perfectly cut circles for our prototype we got them laser printed in the WM Building. The circles came out perfect and this is what that looks like.
We also ended up making the final mockup of the prototype with the string and all of that.
For the string, we decided to go with macrame string. I want to find some slightly thinner macrame string in a more neutral colour hopefully. I think this will go with my own design much better. For the sleeve, I'm probably going to go with a 160-200gsm card just so that it doesn't easily tear and will be able to hold around the base well.
So far though the final mockup looks good. For the cover design, I'm going to paste the design onto the base and then glue all the pieces together. This way the paper doesn't crease and it'll be easier to handle.

Grad602 Week 11/01
I spent a lot of time planning and figuring out what I wanted to change in the design.
What I want to update:

During class, we did some work on advertising ideas. These are the notes I took of "ad rules" and the different styles/forms of ads

My main idea is definitely creating a TikTok ad. Maybe something on how the product works like where you can use it or who can use it?

I definitely want to keep the style simple and easy to follow for my portfolio. BUT I still want to have my distinct style in the portfolio. If I have time I want to possibly make some collage pieces to place on the cover etc.

Grad602 Prototype Making
After having a talk with Akifa about how to create our packaging, we (Studi01) decided to email Fleur so we could have a chat about it.
Because of how elaborate our packaging is, we decided to work together for the actual making of it because it would be a lot easier since none of us are changing the packaging itself just the design of it.
Thursday Meeting
When we got there we got help from Lindsey on how we could go about it. These were some of the ways we could do it.
We decided to stick with the original dieline that we did for our formative. But we did get a lot of help on which paper/cardboard to get and how we could stick the cover design onto it. We were able to go to Gordon Harris and find the cardboard materials we needed for the base of the prototype.
Friday -> Creating Prototype
On Friday, we were able to create the initial prototypes with the materials were going to be using. The materials we ended up needing were just thick cardboard for the circle bases and corrugated cardboard for the cylinder side -> this is because it makes it easier to wrap around the base without it creasing unflatteringly.
We ended up making two tests to see which measurements worked the best. We decided to go with the second test as it fits much better together.

Grad602 Presentation + Formative Reflection
Most important points to keep in mind (Peer + Tutor Feedback):
The final prototype ended up looking really good -> final design was well done
Slogan/Strap line -> Self care through plant care -> GREAT, catchy, genius
Colour palette names are nice -> bring them into the presentation
Research slides with the big typography -> easy to read and to focus on -> what did we find? -> talk about how that helped in the development -> include who researched the info
Introducing logo as stacked and horizontal -> works WELL
Victorian wood type ornaments -> illustrations and logo -> feels sophisticated; talks about finesse and wellbeing
Sticker Sheet -> not sure if right for target market -> the way its laid out means that it could be damaged in the packaging, rethink how this is done
Extra collateral [posters, spotify playlist, stickers, brochure] helps with the selling of the string -> more reason to buy -> not just string but an experience
Illustration is great but maybe there's too much variety between them -> simplicity vs scientific
Work on the brochure -> doesn't work with the rest of the design system because there's so much on it -> keep it simple -> scroll idea? unwind the instructions/care package?
TARGET MARKET -> would buy which is awesome feedback -> maybe too big of a market?
Personas -> maybe there could be a more solid idea of who each person is
Overall Project Reflection:
Honestly super pleased with the reception and the feedback we got for the project. We all worked pretty hard to get it done so it's nice to get good feedback out of it.
There's not too much I would change some little tweaks on certain things but overall the look and message of the brand feel really good. I'm quite glad we did a lot together so the individual part of the project would be tons easier and there wouldn't be too much to tackle.
Studio1 is such a great group to be a part of. I think we all (mostly) pull our weight and work together well. There are no major issues overall apart from the newest member, Ryan, who was able to get the stuff we assigned him done but we felt that he wasn't really willing to contribute more than that. Apart from that, I think our communication is great and we all are pretty ready to share and respond to each other's ideas. Once we had our idea it was quite easy to riff off of each other and develop our ideas into the final product.

Grad602 Week 9
This week was the week of the presentation so we had a couple video calls and a meetup on Wednesday to get it all sorted. This is some of the final stuff and some of the slides we have in our presentation.

Grad602 Week 8/02
In this class, we just finalised the design system fully and collated the illustrations as well as the logo together.
Logo Concepts
These are some of the things I was working on following the last class. I also did some research for a new typeface for the logo and found IvyPresto Display, which I ended up using in the final logo.

This is the final logo. The colours look strange here but they're more toned down in the original.
As you can see I used IvyPreto Display in regular and italic (for the w). We ended up going with something super simple as it fits our brand and I think this works quite well with the rest of the design system.
I did use Briana's amazing illustrations in this as I thought it would look perfect with the typeface. I think I was right.
What we did in class:

I think this class was helpful in helping us with the final ideas and the main ideas behind our brand. I think we were also able to have our final message or takeaway sorted which is a focus on mental health.
We were also able to get some ideas for certain catchphrases or slogans that we could use in the final product.

Grad602 Week 8/01
My job over the last bit of break was to come up with some logo ideas and this was some of the inspiration.
And some of my initial concepts/sketches
What I need to do:
I definitely need to keep working on these and figure out the best way for them to look digitally. There are some initial sketches that I liked on paper but didn't read too well digitally.
Maybe looking for a different font? I like the font we've chosen but it might be too thick for the specific illustrative vibe we're going for. I'll definitely do more research on that.

Grad602 Week 7/02
In today's class, we did more ideation and refining of our ideas. It kinda forced us to think outside of the concept we already have (plant macrame holder idea) and allowed us to think of ideas beyond that.
The other idea was bracelet kits that raised awareness for causes/charities such as mental health, ocean pollution and deforestation. We ended up getting good feedback on it so we've decided to explore it more and see what we can come up with.
For our (kind of) main idea (at this point) the feedback was to see how we could make the product relatable to the consumer. So possibly experimenting with emotional meaning or sentimental value could prove advantageous for making our product more real.
Break Meetings: We've decided to meet up once a week during the break just to catch up and work on our project. Next week we want to come in with some more in-depth ideas with what we have so far as well as mood boards and design system ideas.
