manny looked at kalen and nodded. he knew exactly that people would be judging him. he was marcus' best friend, always under his shadow, and a good motive to try and kill him. did he though? if he was being honest, he did wish that his best friend would get what he deserved, that someone would bring him down a peg, but he never wanted him to die, he never wished death upon anyone. did he?
manny looked back at the water, and he watched the still water. it was calming, and perhaps their institution was right when they decided to do this. manny was totally against it. his best friend just died, why would they do a stupid retreat when they were feeling this way. and to be isolated, it didn't sound smart either, but he went along with it, needing some place to at least greave.
" i wish i didn't have the spotlight, " he responded. " like–– everyone expects me to be the goddamn example now. and i just want a damn break. after that tragedy that happened in the fall, and now this.... " he cleared his throat. he was feeling himself getting too vulnerable, and he didn't need kalen to see this. " it's tragic. "
as much as he had his niche of being studious, all throughout his education and well into his law degree, he had to admit so did manny. there was something about him that seemed like a chameleon. kalen was extremely observant. he saw how good manny was in the arts, but also in his studies. that also made him a big target since he took a lot of spots from marcus.
although, that was a dumb move. kalen didn't have him high up on the suspect list. he probably knew that people would be asking a lot of questions the second that marcus died. unless he was completely dense and couldn't think ahead, then he wouldn't risk himself that much. that made him wonder again, was the man just stupid socially?
they all had their secrets. kalen walked around with the hairs on his neck standing up because he always felt watched. what was going to happen if some of his secrets made it out? he was just going to have to be highly distracting.
" good. " that might have been a weird thing to say, but he meant it. he finally sat down at the edge of the dock. " if you were all smiles they'd also call it odd. people are always going to judge. might as well grieve in your own way. "

manny smiled. he watched parker walked over to one of the other guys and he rolled his eyes. the use of his tongue was unnecessary, but he wrapped his arm around parker, getting closer to him. " you definitely could have KISSED ME, the option was open, " he laughed, before he leaned in closer to him. " i would have been a better kisser than him, " he whispered in parker's ear. " but don't worry, WE'LL MAKE OUT LATER. " he said.
hearing his friends dare, parker merely gave his eyes a roll, that was an easy one. "and le me guess, the dare can't include you?" he teased, shooting the other a wink, before he was pulling himself to his feet, took a sip of his beer then made his way towards the hottest guy that had caught his attention and after maybe a minute, he was making out with the man, tongue and everything. "thanks, handsome." he told him, before he was retuning to manny with a smirk.

" it's just you, best friend. the last thing i want is for you to get cooped up in your room while YOU ARE MISSING ALL THE FUN, " he laughed. he knew that he wanted the other to have a good time. they were all struggling, and yaz couldn't be alone in their room when everyone was out and about. when he heard them say truth, he thought of a few and then he landed on one. " IS IT TRUE that there is someone in this room you think is absolutely your type? " he teased. he knew the other wasn't one to jump in so quickly to relationships, being a demi... whatever it was, but he wanted to get a kick of it for a moment. he was curious to see if any of the guys here peaked their interest.
✚ ❝ it's bad enough you literally picked up and kidnapped me out of my cabin, now you're trying to see what's underneath my clothes ? not beating those pervert allegations, MJ. ❞ yaz shakes their head, though in a way that wasn't totally condescending given that they and manny were childhood friends, so even though they weren't exactly thrilled to be pulled away from exam prep and in the company of a bunch of horned & aggravating seniors, they would tolerate it for a few minutes before they retreated back to their cabin to finish highlighting equations to chem formulas, because despite the hell on campus yaz was sure an exam was waiting for them when they all got back, marcus or no marcus. ❝ alright .... truth. ❞ yaz gives the go ahead, taking out their nifty flask in case the truth that was being asked was one they didn't want to share, not to mention they weren't taking drinks from a couple of students who they knew without a fucking shadow of a doubt were sex fiends.

MANNY KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING, especially in a setting like this. he didn't want to play truth or dare, he wasn't a damn child. and he knew that francis wouldn't do the dare, even if he was the one that gave him. so watching him, he smirked, as he got up and started to walk away. " does it though? " he grins. " i still get what i want, you naked, " he winks. but as he watches the other go, manny tells someone else to go instead. he continues to drink his beer when he hears the text tone. he grabs his phone, and looks at the text on the screen before closing it and putting it in his back pocket. " alright boys, i'm calling it a night, " he states as he gets up and heads out.
manny finds himself walking upstairs though, to the second floor where francis seemed to step in. he smiles as he steps in the decent sized room, closing the door behind him and locking it. " HOW'S YOUR HEAD, is it feeling any better? " he asks, knowing well that he was perfectly fine.
FRANCIS CONSIDERED IT FOR A MOMENT , WOULD BE MORE SHAMELESS IF IT WAS JUST THE TWO OF THEM ; but francis also knew the value of a good mystery. as much as he'd love to brag about what he was hiding in his pants , he didn't want to be just another piece of meat ────── and he thought : people are better when you keep them wanting , enticed with what they can't have. at least when it came to everyone else. but manny ? he couldn't deny him. " kind of defeats the purpose of the game , doesn't it ? c'mon manny , there'd be no point for me to keep playing if i just reveal the goods on round one. " he clicked his tongue and shook his head disappointedly. francis drank the rest of his beer before he stood up , stretching his muscles for a few moments while he kept his heavy gaze on the school's new it boy. " THINK I GOT A HEADACHE , BOYS ... just gonna pop an aspirin and sleep it off. " he waved off the collective groan and headed back into the cabin , so unlike him to miss out on a party but he just had better plans than playing some stupid game.

" i mean, PRETTY HYPOCRITICAL OF YOU, " he said. " you're out here all alone, in the dark, walking away from the group, " he chuckled. hearing him say what he was doing he nods. " well–– don't go alone. it's clearly dangerous dude. we don't need another one of us dead, " he sighs. eyes glanced over to him. manny finally approaches him, as he continues to walk. " next time take a buddy at least, " manny stated.
he grabs his sidekick phone to see the text from one of the guys back at the cabins and he ignores it. jason has his attention now, and manny decides he wants to stick with him, even if he doesn't want the company. " haven't really seen much of you, you like to keep to yourself a lot, huh? " he asks. " or you just don't like the guys FLIRTING WITH YOU? " he jokes.
"and so following somebody else out in to the dark alone seemed like a great idea?" he didn't even make an effort to contain the exasperation in his voice, even if it was a little hypocritical given he'd wandered off on his own. he was just working under the assumption he didn't immediately have a target on his back. maybe. probably. at least he certainly wouldn't have as much of an impact as the first victim. hell, maybe they'd be doing him a fa-

manny had eyes. after his best friend's death, he kept his eyes on everyone around. he was suspicious of everyone, but also worried that whatever happened to marcus, could happen to any of them, could happen to him. he was in the middle of sipping his drink when he noticed jason walking off. why would he end up walking off when it was dark. that was very suspicious. but then again, that was something he'd do himself. all the noise became overwhelming at times.
so he followed him. and of course he was noticed. he chuckled at what the other said. he walked out, making himself more into view. " honestly, if anyone should be worried of getting murdered, it's probably me, " he stated. " HEAVY IS THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE CROWN or whatever that saying is. "

there was a different sort of freedom here. at least, that was how it felt to jason. somewhere removed from what had happened, a lessened eye upon them. and while he would love to be enjoying the freedom offered by the lakeside, there were still eyes here. always. everywhere, everywhen. it's why, with the sun beginning to dip on the horizon, he chose his moment to slip away from the crowds and just... breathe. not linger on thoughts that had no place in his head for the next week. while it wouldn't be true freedom, he could take it as a breath of fresh air, maybe.
"you know following somebody in the middle of the dark after a classmate was murdered really isn't a good look, right?" he'd heard the snap from behind him a minute or so prior, but decided to at least start leading himself back toward one of the houses before raising his voice. head turning to look over his shoulder, and awaiting something of a reply.

if there was one thing to keep parker interested, it was to involve either booze or naked hot bodies, so manny had caught his interest in the game almost immediately. manny cocked his head before rolling his eyes. it wasn't like he hadn't seen the other naked before. manny took a swig of his drink and then he thought of a dare. he sure as hell wanted to see francis naked. so when the idea popped in his head, he smiled. " well, since you said i should ask. I DARE YOU TO TAKE OFF ALL YOUR CLOTHES and go jump in the lake, " he smiles. " i guess it's not really a question, but the sentiment is there. " eyes kept his eyes on the other, the smile still on his face. " OR YOU CAN BE BORING and just take one piece of clothing off now. "

he turned to see who it was that was creeping up on him. kalen, the law student who took academics seriously. manny always saw him in the library just as much as he often did. but manny never really stay as long as he did. he enjoyed a bit of fun, being social. manny never wanted to be the nerdy best friend. he wanted to be in the spotlight too.
manny knew what people were thinking. the moment that marcus died, everyone looked at manny now. he was the closest person to him, and he was pushed into the spotlight that he so desperately wanted. but this was not how he wanted it. not days after the last one died. and then he heard the whispers. did people really think he would be capable of murder?
the answer was yes, they did think it. and it was irritating, feeling like they thought manny was capable. he had his secrets, but nothing that extreme. he never wanted marcus dead, just someone to knock him down a step or two.
" I DON'T CARE, " he responded. " i needed time away. i can't be over there acting like everything is sunshines and rainbows, " he stated. " acting like he's not dead or QUIETLY CELEBRATING... " he sighs.
dealing with the competition of being the top of the class was stressful. for that reason alone he was almost happy to be enrolled in the law program instead of undergrad. he didn't know how his grades would fair with people like marcus and manuel heavy on his tail. now the younger man was probably happy though. on some level, his friend was gone and that meant that he wasn't going to have that constant competition anymore. was that enough reason to want someone dead? for some, it might have been.
even his own relationship with the deceased was strange. while they weren't in the same grade, they still traveled in the same social circles. that meant that he was still a competitor. one of the things that the two of them shared in common was the fact that they were polylingual. he always felt like he had to learn more languages.
kalen was walking aimlessly when he was thinking about everything that happened in the past couple of months. was marcus also being blackmailed? how many skeletons did he have in his closet? he needed to find out, he almost craved to have all of the information. yet there he was, accidentally sneaking up on the new it boy because he didn't see how he was sitting at the edge of the docks. he should've looked down.
" neither is constantly walking away from the group and making yourself a target. " kalen wasn't trying to judge manny, but he did it so naturally nowadays. " i'm sure EVERYTHING IS TOUGH right now, but you really shouldn't be alone . " he was already a mini marcus. the new it boy. did he really want to meet the same fate as him too?

manny wasn't sure how he was holding it together. he hadn't cried once since the news of his best friend's passing. even though the two of them at times clashed, feeling like he was always competing with him, the sudden death only a few months before they graduated, it was a shock. so when they were taken away from the school, he felt obligated to go. he was the next in line for valedictorian, and he felt like if he didn't show face, it would look bad somehow. everything was moving so fast, and he wasn't prepared to be the one to pick up the pieces.
but how was he meant to do that when he himself was not prepared for it. even though marcus was always someone he seemed to always compete with, feeling like he was but his shadow, he still cared about him. he still loved him. even if they argued, or fought, the love for him was still there.
so when he found a bit of time away from the group, he walked over to the small wooden pier by the lake. he needed to let out these feelings he's been holding in. if it wasn't now, it would be later, and he didn't want anyone to end up seeing him this way. especially now that everyone saw him as the next marcus. manny always wanted the spotlight, but not like this, not when he had to lose his best friend for it.
he didn't know how long he was sitting alone, feeling his emotions when he heard footsteps from behind. manny quickly wiped his eyes and immediately shifted his body. he cleared his throat, turning on the persona that everyone known to see. " if i were you, i'd turn back around and leave me be, I'M CLEARLY NOT IN THE MOOD, " manny said.

when someone mentions the diaz family, it's nothing but good things for that family. of course it would be. they were the poster family of what the american dream was all about. the family immigrated from dominican republic in the early 80s, with a hundred dollars in their pockets and but a dream. the dream for a better life. jaime and marisol had always dreamt of living their lives in the united states, but when manuel was born, they had another dream now, to give manny the best life they could, and that was to move them to a country where anything was possible.
and that's what manuel managed to do. growing up from his humble beginnings and learn that with a bit of hard work and dedication, any dream was possible. and growing up with someone who had everything, he felt like he needed to keep up with all the things he managed. marcus was always the charming one, the trendy one, the king of the school. and manny always felt like he was just his lackey more than he was a friend. but that didn't stop manny for pursuing things he enjoyed, even if marcus wasn't into it, from being the best in whatever sport he was in, to getting a solo in the school and church choir, to ending up getting the lead role in every musical and play he had auditioned for during school. he was dream catcher, a perfectionist, an idealistic person.
the struggles came when he applied to schools, and finding out that he was an immigrant himself. for most of his life he was told that he was born in the bronx. manuel's whole life was in the states, in new york city, and discovering that he couldn't legally get a job or apply for student loans because he was not from here took a toll on his whole identity. no one knew else knew about this, not even marcus, except for esteban chamberlain, marcus' father.
after the news, he didn't stop though. he kept working hard, getting accepted to one of the best schools. his eyes were set on lawrence university. it was the most prestigious school that he knew he needed to be part of, but he knew that he would struggle to afford the school. luckily he got some money with some scholarships, but it wasn't enough. he had enough for a year, thanks to his parents saving up, but he still needed three more years worth of tuition, so he had to find some way to get the money. and so he found himself escorting, and then eventually finding a man that would eventually helped.
he managed to do all this under the books, until marcus discovered the truth. he knew about his status, he found out that he was doing escorting his freshman and sophomore year, and he knew all about the guy that he was sleeping with for money. their relationship had strained, that manny was tired of feeling less, and the night he died he had an argument with him. after his death, it was him that took over the reigns. he was next in line for valedictorian, he was given so much love after marcus died, seeing as he was the closest with him. and now he was the new it boy. it was cool, but the last thing he wanted was for people thinking he had something to do with his death.

childhood friend // competition - marcus chamberlain was always on top. even though he was a close friend to him, manny felt like he was always under his shadow, never shining because he would always take the spotlight from him. and it didn't change when they went to college. but now that he has passed away, he is getting the spotlight that he deserved. but the question is, did manny have anything to do with his death?
childhood friend, found family - someone who genuinely felt a connection with. he even had a little crush on, but never really did anything because of marcus. he hopes now that marcus is gone, things with them could evolve into something stronger.
ride or die - this is a friend he had met at lawerence university, the one that became his true best friend, unlike his former frenemy. how they met was through an event, and then ended up having a few classes together as well, but they ended up hanging outside of school events and classes, which made their relationship even tighter.
current hookup/fwb - it's not serious, but just someone he has fun with. it could go either two ways, feelings may get involved and manny runs or it continues to just be fwb type deal.
