there is too much sword fighting in xianxia novels. i propose a main character who is completely average at swordplay but is skilled in hand to hand fighting. so they decide to use this as a trump card, and not really display their abilities.

Ok disclaimers being that i'm someone w/ adhd and i acknowledge that adhd presents itself differently in everyone.

The impulsiveness that was Yue Qi's defining character trait was what first led me down this path. So then I've thought a lot about how this would present itself when he was at CQMS and suddenly had a more rigid structure in his life, a lot of it depending on sitting still and listening.

When I write YQY there's always some level of movement going on, whether it's shifting in his seat or subtly flexing his fingers, and focusing is something that takes a conscious effort because of audio processing issues. In my mind, it was sheer determination that got him through the writing/language/etc aspects of learning that he was suddenly thrust into and even then I picture it as having been quite a struggle that he turned inward. Luckily, the physical aspects of cultivation were a good outlet for him and slowly, the structure of the day to day sect life became helpful as well. (I do think that a fucked up day does result in some chaos for him that he has to bulldoze back into order) But he was still impulsive, and pushing his way through what he struggled with got him this far, so of course that's what he'd keep doing. Imagine someone who got by procrastinating in high school and is suddenly met with the consequences of that habit in college.

Being impulsive was fine, it was working, until it wasn’t.

After thinking that SJ is dead, he drastically over corrects. He fucked up in the worst way. There was no coming back from this, everything that he thought was fine before was apparently not.

Now he hesitates too much when he needs to act, thinks about how it affects everyone instead of blindly going forward without worrying too much of the consequences. A lot of this makes him a good sect leader, but it's stifling in it's own way. Like masking 24/7 out of guilt and fear of a repeated, drastic, failure. In the way that people with untreated adhd tend to have depression and anxiety as a result of coping (or not coping) with adhd I think both of these would develop in YQY, further exasperated by the the toll his mental health took by being in solitary confinement for over a year.

(That’s another conversation.)

When he reunites with SJ he's so fucking relieved, so happy, but also deeply ashamed of everything with LX caves and anxious and depressed and maybe feeling an aspect of rejection sensitive dyphoria if the truth comes out about his failure. He’s preemptively accepting that SJ thinks he’s the worst w/o ever telling him the truth that would, sadly, raise SJ’s esteem of him. I do think his RSD would fully fixate on SJ and not on any one else because for the longest time SJ is the only one who mattered. And even then Xiao Jiu is by nature so prickly that there is some leeway because there Always has been for his qi-ge. Even during the QiJiu extras ling xi caves scene there is a sense of care/worry that SJ shows for yqy, so even if their relationship has degraded I do think YQY can sense there is still some regard there, however small.

Also where I hc SJ as having an amazing innate sense of time which also made those years apart drag on, I do think YQY suffers from time blindness and so for him, of course he’s ready to jump back into this relationship where they left off.

It’s a Yin Yu Quan Yizhen situation in a way. Where SJ and YY rely on the world’s judgement to perceive themselves, YQY and QYZ only care about their perception through the reflection YY&SJ provide.

Yue Qingyuan is a fun character because depending on what angle you look at him from, he is either surprisingly well-adjusted or surprisingly unhinged.

If you're looking at Yue Qingyuan, the composed, reasonable, ever-polite sect leader, you will probably be taken aback by how much of that is just smoke and mirrors. And not just like one layer, either, it's not simple like "beneath that smiling facade he's actually an ambitious asshole" or something, no, beneath the first layer of smoke and mirrors there is another one, and then another one, all piled up and twisted together over a core that is a terrified and starving child. He's like one of those old English pubs where the wood rot is so thorough that it's actually what's keeping the roof from collapsing.

But if you're looking at the former slave child who had to be the biggest, most responsible of a gang of neglected and traumatized urchins, who ran away to become a cultivator only to make a wrong choice that got his entire body and spirit taken apart and put back together again, only to lose the one relationship that mattered to him, then the fact that he's anything other than a weeping mess on the floor is genuinely impressive.

I was a little worked up because I passed up this fic so many times because of the summary, but you are right. I shouldn't have been so mean about it. The author seems like a nice person, they don't deserve that talk.

It takes a bit to get going (QiJiu only get together around chapter 10 iirc) but I think the author is finally getting into the idea that they don't have to fully commit to the gimmick they set up early and the fic has been getting better and better. And now YQY will get to kill a man in extreme prejudice in front of the whole sect and I was yelling so hard about that that I scared my dog.

I’m driving across the state right now so I’ve had the first few chapters on text to speech and anon YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!!! I love this!!! I’m a sucker for any world building, especially revolving around the demon realm!!! Also SQQ making friends always gets me like 🥹🥹🥹🥹 with Mobei Jun it’s like seeing two expensive cats approaching each other and solemnly deciding they’re equals.

hi. we're back to svsss again. i read Asymptotical's Many an Ill to Cure yesterday. There was this line that sort of caught in my head:

If this bit of lore was true, then Yue Qingyuan was married to Shang Qinghua of all people, and that was about the only matchup he could think of that was possibly worse than pairing Shen Qingqiu with Liu Qingge.

and my brain.... ran with it. not for very long, because i really don't have a GREAT grasp of these characters and also i should absolutely be doing something else. but here you go.

At the ripe old age of twenty-something, Shang Qinghua had successfully lied and cheated his ass off to become the An Ding Head Disciple. It absolutely didn't mean his troubles were over -- it was still An Ding, and An Ding always meant backbreaking work, no matter how high up you climbed, and haha also there was still the entire fucking plot left. But at least he had a really nice house now! At least people had to pretend to respect him! At least the System wouldn't keep that fucking countdown clock in the corner of his eye about how he had X months to make Head Disciple before it nuked his brain into a crisp!

Overall, things were going about as great as could be expected!

Except for, you know, this... this one little thing.

"What???" Shang Qinghua said, when Shizun had first lobbed it at his head.

The Lord of An Ding Peak looked askance at him. Shang Qinghua cleared his throat and tried again. "Begging this one's pardon, but... but could Shizun repeat that?"

"You'll be engaged to Yue Qingyuan," said the An Ding Peak Lord.

Yeah, that's what Shang Qinghua thought Shizun said.

FUCK!

This was his fault. Like, literally everything was his fault, seeing how he was effectively God, but this was a mistake that he didn't have to make! You could argue about the violence and the papapa, but in the end, he was speed-writing a stallion novel for money so he didn't starve.

But the engagement.

Airplane-Shooting-Towards-The-Sky had been trying to explain exactly why so many young, beautiful, cold cultivators were so eager to get with Bing-ge, even if they seemed to hate literally any other person ever. He'd eventually settled on the idea that in PIDW, even cultivators weren't truly respected as adults until they were married. In other words, marriage was a requirement! A spouse was a job position! Of course Bing-ge's wives would sell out for the best possible candidate, even if they were ambitious power-hungry snakes without a romantic bone in their body! Especially if they were ambitious power-hungry snakes without a romantic bone in their body!

In fact, even the Peak Lords of Cang Qiong did it! They were even married to each other! Even the Sect Leader! Haha, it wasn't so weird after all!

God. It would have been fine if he left it without explanation. It wasn't even like he kept the explanation -- no, he wrote it and forgot about it, just like how he did with half of the shit he wrote sleep-deprived and running on caffeine alone. And now he was stuck with this.

"Do you have any objections?" Shizun said, and then Shang Qinghua had to go noooo, of course not, Yue Qingyuan was a mighty and handsome cultivator who topped the unofficial rankings for most eligible bachelor on Cang Qiong for three years straight! How could this lowly Shang Qinghua possibly have any objections?

It was super lucky that Shen Qingqiu was too busy being engaged with Liu Qingge to murder Shang Qinghua for the affront.

Anyway, that was how Shang Qinghua had ended up here -- alone with Yue Qingyuan, sitting across from each other and drinking tea. There was a plate of delicately shaped cakes sitting between them that Shizun had heavily suggested Shang Qinghua should make. You know, to show off his culinary skills to his... his fiance.

“Shang-shidi," Yue Qingyuan said, turning a cake over in one hand. There was some muffled yelling in the background. Shen Qingqiu and Liu Qingge were clearly having a great time of their own scheduled courtship meeting session.

"Yue-shixiong," Shang Qinghua said. "Hi."

Yue Qingyuan's smile didn't waver. "These are very good," he said politely.

Of course they were good. Shang Qinghua wouldn't have been able to successfully suck up to Shizun if they weren't good. It had taken a lot of practice! And sabotage! Practice AND sabotage!

"Haha, thanks," Shang Qinghua said.

Faintly, an explosion sounded in the background. Yue Qingyuan's brows furrowed slightly. "Shidi," he said. "Could you perhaps open the door?"
