[Photo ID: BREAKING: Chicago Passes Ceasefire Resolution. In a 23-23 vote with Mayor Johnson as the tie breaker, Chicago today became the largest city in the US to endorse a ceasefire in Gaza.]
"Since around January time, the US has negatively revised its assessment of Israel under Netanyahu. He does not behave as an ally, he has accrued a debilitating credibility deficit over the years on a multitude of issues, and he has intentionally failed to come up with a plan for postwar Gaza - to the point where he is now seriously suspected in Washington of prolonging the war for his own political survival antics. The current showdown over the security council resolution widens the rift to the point that it is impossible to see how the trajectory will change as long as Netanyahu is in power.
At the moment, the US has three points of disagreement with Israel regarding the details of the prosecution of the war: the notion that Israel is impeding humanitarian aid; the number of civilian non-combatant deaths; and a possible military invasion of Rafah, on the southern tip of Gaza. These differences could have been resolved had Netanyahu and Biden had a working, honest and good-faith relationship. They do not. In fact, Netanyahu has a track record of confrontations and frequent spats with US administrations, from George HW Bush through to Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and now Biden. His -unsuccessful, it must be added -meddling in US politics is also a familiar trait of his since the 1990s.
The current state of relations is close to an inflection point, and could go in one of two directions: either Netanyahu is ousted or leaves or loses an election, or the US will be convinced that the bilateral ecosystem has faltered and warrants a major reassessment of relations. Under Netanyahu, Israel has reached the point at which its very value as an ally is being questioned. It took the US some time, but it finally seems to realise a simple fact: Israel may be an ally, but Netanyahu most certainly is not."
What this article doesn't explicitly state, though the implication is fairly obvious, is that there is at least one US President Netanyahu seems to have had a pretty good relationship with: Donald Trump. And one possible way out of the deterioration of US/Israel relations without him changing course or losing power- the departure of Joe Biden and the reelection of Donald Trump.
But sure, keep telling me how voting out Biden to protest the war in Gaza makes perfect sense, as opposed to what it actually is, which is throwing Bibi his only remaining political life line.
Okay as someone who just got back from listening to Over Five Hours of public comment on whether or not my town should back a ceasefire resolution, I’m REALLY aware of why getting involved in local government is so important.
The guy who fronted the ceasefire resolution is only 22 (younger than me!) and without his community organizing and initiative to get on city council in the first place, there would have been Far Fewer public commenters in favor of the resolution! I could go on about How and Why but the point is that if you have the ability, you must use your voice to speak up for what you believe in, because the older generations and the people opposing progressive legislation will absolutely use theirs.
Don’t let anyone tell you community organizing and involvement with local government is pointless. There are already people out there doing the work and every voice in support helps. Literally every single one.
Yesterday, on Monday December 11th 2023, representatives of the Florida Palestine Network, as well as other Christian, Jewish, and Islamic residents of Orlando spoke before the Orlando City Council in plea that a resolution to call for ceasefire in Gaza.
Democrat Mayor Buddy Dyer and his council denied the resolution. They did not even speak in support of Palestine.
Okay, first of all, if you live in Orlando, email or call Buddy and tell him he and his council made the wrong choice and you will not vote for him unless he makes the right one. Be angry. Be specific.
Second, keep acting up in support of Palestine. Get caught up on what’s happened, contact your representatives, go to local protests and participate in boycotts. Groups like FPN need our help to make their impact wider and deeper.
Here’s a good place to start, if you haven’t seen it already.
If you live in Florida, here’s FPN’s insta with a startup link in their bio.
Even if you don’t live in Florida, please please send this around with tags. Tumblr’s the only social I really use anymore, and I don’t have a lot of Orlando friends/mutuals. I wanna spread this as far as I can. Thanks. :)
My town was among the first in our state to switch to celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day, but they draft a ceasefire resolution neutering it of every mention of genocide, occupation, and colonialism. How are you this blind? They call them animals now, they called them savages then. Isn’t the echo driving you mad? They spread unsubstantiated rumors of rape and infanticide now, they burned villages for stories of kidnapping and human sacrifice then. Am I the only one reliving my high school history classes in real time? Go back to celebrating Christopher Columbus since you clearly don’t give a damn about recognizing the genocide and oppression of people unless it happened centuries ago and you can comfortably wash your third generation American hands of guilt.
Police stormed the Columbia University building late Tuesday after the university asked for help, a spokesman said in a statement. A tent camp on campus was cleared, as was Hamilton Hall, where a stream of police used a ladder to climb through a second-floor window.
Protesters calling for the Ivy League university to stop collaborating with Israel or companies that support the Gaza war took over the hall about 20 hours ago. The school said:
“After the University learned overnight that Hamilton Hall had been occupied, vandalised, and blockaded, we were left with no choice. The decision to reach out to the NYPD was in response to the actions of the protesters, not the cause they are championing. We have made it clear that the life of campus cannot be endlessly interrupted by protesters who violate the rules and the law.”
The arrests came after protesters refused to honour an earlier ultimatum to leave the camp on Monday or be suspended, and after other universities stepped up efforts to end the demonstrations inspired by Columbia University.
Fabien Lugo, a first-year accounting student who said he did not participate in the protests, said he disagreed with the university’s decision to call the police. He said:
“This is too intense. It feels like more of an escalation than a de-escalation.”
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Passed the Gaza Ceasefire Resolution on March 25, More Than a Half-Year Since “Illegal Regime of The Terrorist and Fascist Zionist 🐖 🐷 🐗: Isra-hell” Launched Its Offensive on Gaza Following the October 7 Attacks. The Resolution Demands an Immediate Ceasefire and Unconditional Release of All Hostages. Only the US Abstained and the Other 14 Council Members Voted in Favor.
US abstains from ceasefire vote at the UN, allowing the resolution to pass.
Netanyahu has retaliated by cancelling his planned visit to Washington, which, I'm sure Biden is absolutely devastated that Netanyahu isn't going to come to the US to badmouth him in front of Congress during an election. Just devastated.
Edit: Correction, I believe the cancelled Israel visit was a delegation to discuss plans re Gaza. The point stands, however, that Netanyahu's actions seem unlikely to actually strengthen his position in any way, at least so far as I can see.
The following letter was sent to the Amherst Town Council on February 19, 2024.
"...a resolution for consideration by the Town Council that offers present-day support to the residents of the area and looks forward to a peaceful future for all. I hope it might find widespread approval in Amherst. My draft resolution follows."
