shell
When she was little her mother used to take her to the sea. It was cold, mostly, and the wind made the sand scrap over her cheeks, so rough it felt like a burn. The waves crashed against the beach and, sometimes, if she was feeling brave she would walk further and deep her toes into the freezing water. Within minutes she started shivering, snot running down her nose, and her lips would get a bluish tint that reminded her of the residue of blueberry shaved ice. Her mother would take her away by that point, even though she cried because she really didn’t want to leave. Even in summer the water was too cold for a proper bath, something to do with melting polar caps and arctic currents. Most of the time, to appease her, her mother would let her take small shells home with her. Still wearing her coat, her mother’s scarf wrapped around her head to protect her ears, she would knee and bury chubby fingers on the wet sand, searching like a seasoned collector till she found the perfect one. Her hair, very thin and pale, shone like fire in the red afternoon sun. The golden, sleek waves had come while she grew up, like her soul it had darkened along the years. They would walk along the ocean, cataloging shell after shell, big or small, some smooth like glass, others so sharp she feared cutting herself. Her favorites were the curved ones, which revolved around themselves like endless spirals. She could spend hours staring at them, caressing with her fingertips the smoothed edges. One time she’d found a live one, and she watched as it struggled against the walls of its hard shell; she hadn’t realized until that moment that protection could also be a prison.
When her mother died, she stopped going. But now, as she watched Catherine across the table of an empty café, green eyes as tempestuous as the waves of the sea, as she buried her fingers on fresh wounds, bloodied flesh as pliable as wet sand, bruised knee and the taste of coffee bitter as the sting of antiseptic on the back of her throat, as she watched the slow cracking of walls, and finally saw the soft, shiny skin underneath, beautiful and strong but still too fragile to fight the world on its own, she considered going back. She considered asking and wondered if Catherine would go with her.
