challenge 003: daily living
Bedroom:
All exposed brick and warm wood and fluffy pillows and tons of natural light. The tone of Zack’s bedroom is warm, dark, and rich. Cozy and prime for sleeping but not much else. His room has little to no decoration and very few personal effects aside from the necessities like shoes and clothes. He sees no reason for having a decked out bedroom, preferring to spend his time and money on other things (namely his entertainment center rife with a huge tv and an even larger movie collection).
Ride:
Zack rolls around in a 1970s Ford Bronco. Sturdy, dependable, and well-maintained, it’s survived 3 generation of Kapoors and has gotten Zack from point A to B since he turned 16.  It had once belonged to his grandfather and after a bit of refurbishment, his father passed it along to Zack on his birthday. Since arriving in California, he’s taken to driving it with the top off.
Last Meal:
Two words: funnel cake. He has an extreme sweet tooth and anything that comes with powdered sugar is aces.
Handwriting:
His thoughts have always flooded his mind faster than he could put them into words and it shows in his handwriting. Much like his thoughts, his strokes are quick, sharp and made with intention; the letters seated deep in the page. He makes it a point to keep his writing legible even if it may come off a bit haphazard.

who you gonna call ~ isaiah & zack
when: April 2017 where: Hollywood Sign, Griffith Park status: closed >> @countingbluecars
The setting sun tore angry red slashes in the marbled amethyst of a nearly perfect Southern California sky. This sky was one of foreboding.  The mood it set was somewhat ominous, providing the perfect backdrop for Zack’s activities.
The loose dirt shifted under his feet as he turned his back on the horizon. He lifted his phone, angling it just so, before grinning and snapping the picture. He wasn’t much for selfies but his mother insisted he take pictures of everything in LA. Lowering his phone, he eyed the finished product to make sure he got a good shot of the sky and hills and the letters of the Hollywood sign. The view of the sign from his current position wasn’t that great – from the top of the hill, the back of the letters was all that was visible. And they were backward at that. But what was lacking visually was more than made up in proximity.
Zack stood at the top of the hill, looking down on the sign. Not close enough to set off the alarms surrounding it, but close enough to try to get a reading. Satisfied with his picture, he shot off a quick text to his friend Raffe who was the main reason Zack had trekked through Griffith Park in the first place. Accorrding to Raf, the Hollywood sign was one of many sights of alleged spiritual activity in LA. From what Zack had read on some of the paranormal forums he belonged to, there was a consensus that it was bogus. But Zack had never been one to operate off someone’s word alone. He had to see for himself.
Zack had broken open his ghost hunting kit for this trip, which he hadn’t done for a while. The last time he could remember using his EMF meter and thermal imaging camera was a few years ago when his friends took him to New Orleans for his 25th birthday. And before that, he hadn’t used them since college when his friend Leroy roped him into making audition tapes for the Real World.
He sighed, slipping his phone back into his pocket before twisting to unzip the backpack hitched on his shoulder. There were a few other tourists milling about, but after ensuring that no one was paying him any attention, he pulled out his thermal camera. The thermometer he’d attached was still secured from the last time he’d used it. Powering up the camera, he eyed the viewfinder, watching for the tell-tale pattern of infrared images. Zack swept the area, moving slowly, eyes fixed to the screen searching for any signs of a ghostly presence.

new kid on the block~ adele & zack
When: April 2017 Where: Church of Saints Status: closed >> @davisadele
It had only been a few weeks since Zack’s life took a detour. For the most part, he’d settled into running Smooth Moves. He was still on the fence as to whether it would be better for him to hire a manager to run the day-to-day stuff so he could focus solely on the business side of things. But he figured he’d give it a few more weeks before he made a decision.
And he’d grown used to living in his benefactor’s apartment but he still felt like a tourist just visiting. The place was still full of Jairus’ things, not that Zack minded. Truth be told, it made him feel a step closer to the man he never got to meet. The only downside was that he hadn’t been able to bring himself to look through all of Jairus’s things without feeling like an intruder.
Slipping into his new role as a member of the Board had been the easiest adjustment to make. He embraced the much-needed familiarity each and every time he stepped into the Church of Saints. The walls were different as were the faces within them, but the warmth he felt standing inside was the same as it ever was. The Church of Saints had been in Zack’s life as far back as he could remember. Sunday school. Christmas plays. Youth group retreats. You name it, he did it. But it wasn’t until he got older that he got anything real from it – a sense of purpose. The older he got, the more he realized that he was part of something much bigger than himself, that everyone was. Everyone had a part to play and his was helping people.
Wearing the mantle of Chastity brought on a cocktail of emotion he had yet to fully come to terms with: honor, pride, joy, anxiety, hope, determination, confusion. It was a heady mix but it was easily drowned out by an overwhelming need to contribute to the congregation. Ideas of how to do just that were already brimming in his mind. Back in Kansas, he’d been heavily involved in youth outreach and had even started a basketball league for the kids in the neighborhood.
Zack headed toward Zoe’s office to see if something like that was already established here and if not, if she would be opposed to him introducing it.  He still wasn’t sure what his role on the Board was exactly or the extent of Zoe’s expectations for him. She’d explained it to him but theory and practice were two different beasts.
Skirting the edge of the hall, he made room for a group of kids exiting a nearby room. He listened to their excited chatter and returned the smiles that some of them flashed at him. After it seemed like the last kid had trickled out, Zack approached the room and tentatively poked his head in, curious as to what the kids had just been doing. Recognition sparked at the sight of the lone person who remained. Adele.
“Looks like I missed the party,” he mused as he leaned his shoulder up against the door frame.

Zoe: That's a really good idea... I'm not completely sure because we were apart all day but I'll see if I can piece it together. If I could even figure out where she was taken from...
Zoe: It's really appreciated.
Zack: Is she the type to stick to a routine? Maybe you can figure out whether she made it to every place she was supposed to be. And if she followed a routine, the kidnapper has probably been watching her to figure out the best time/place to grab her. Maybe someone's seen a suspicious person lurking around Maria.
Zack: If she's been in to Smooth Moves recently, we could check the cameras.

unsaveable-soul:
A tantrum that includes kidnapping and the implied impending torture of someone? If that’s your idea of a tantrum then I’d hate to think exactly what you think someone actually mad could do. I’ll give you a hint. I’ve seen it. It isn’t pretty. There are… people here that don’t take kindly to being slighted. No matter how minor it seems.
Tumblr media
I meant tantrum as in someone lashing out because they didn’t get their way. Contrary to popular belief, punishment is meant to curb a behavior, not to hurt someone just because they made you mad. That would be retaliation more than anything. And either way, it’s still an overreaction.

Zoe: I don't know. She just didn't come home.
Zoe: Thank you, I really appreciate the help.
Zack: How long has she been missing? If you you have an idea of the time she was taken, you could try to compare it to the time the video was posted. That could at least give you an idea of whether she's still in the city. It's not much but it could be something.
Zack: Anytime.

saltwaterkezia:
Kezia grinned a little at the compliment, not entirely immune to flattery. “A good mix,” she answered. “Plenty of regulars, but a lot of one-hit tourists too, which is nice.” As much as Kezia delighted in fitting flavors together and making surprise mixes, it was also nice to get a wave of tourists ordering off the menu. She could just zone out and move through the motions. Made the hours go by on some days.
Something in Zack’s face changed a little, but Kezia only barely picked up on it, really. Maybe he was just a tourist after all, not someone she would see again. That was a shame, but it happened often enough, being in LA. When he explained his confession, his real reason for coming, the plastic pitcher dropped from Kezia’s hand. It clattered noisily to the floor, remnants of the smoothie splashing over her shoes. “Fuck,” she swore under her breath. Looking up from the mess, she met the man’s eyes. “You’re Zack,” she exhaled.
Either Zoe or Cassiel had explained it to her, Kezia couldn’t remember at that point. The whole of the week had been an utter blur of too many emotions. But she remembered that it was a descendant of Jairus’s angel lover that was taking over the business and even his place on the Board, if she remembered right. “Wow,” she gaped another minute before swearing at herself again and scooping up the dropped container. “Sorry, it’s just…crazy to meet you. To think of someone else owning this place and everything.”
Smooth Moves had been her second home, and Jairus like a father to her when she had none. Dealing with him being gone had been one thing. But to have his replacement coming in… It took a whole other set of adjustments. “But, um. Welcome. I’m really, really glad you enjoyed that in this case,” she said gesturing to the smoothie in his hand. “You’re…” She stopped a moment, bit her lower lip before starting once more, “You’re not gonna sell this place, are you?”
Tumblr media
Zack hadn’t known what reaction he’d been expecting but it wasn’t that. He didn’t know what was more telling: the startled expression that overcast her previously sunny disposition or the pitcher tumbling to the floor. His hand shot out instinctively in a futile attempt to help her, the counter between them preventing him from being any help. He settled for grabbing a few napkins to sop up the remnants of smoothie that had splashed onto the counter.
The way she’d said Zack wasn’t lost on him, more word than name, more idea than fact, more myth than man. “Guess my reputation precedes me.” He offered her a wry smile, crumpling up the used napkins. “No, I get it,” he said, waiving off her apology, “Believe me, it sounds just as crazy to me.”
Judging by her reaction, Kezia must have been close to Jairus. Announcing his ownership so casually was a miscalculation on Zack’s part. To him, the whole turn of events had been a bizarre but pleasant surprise, the right opportunity coming at the right time. But for people who actually had known Jairus, it ran deeper and hit harder. He made a mental note to be more sensitive to the situation going forward.
“I didn’t mean to spring that on you, but thank you.” He raised the glass in a small salute at her awkward, but much appreciated, welcome. However, Kezia’s question caught him a bit off guard. The decision hadn’t been made yet but the look on her face stopped him from putting that thought into words. She seemed almost worried that he was going to say yes. But maybe Zack was reading too much into it, maybe it was just his sense of adventure trying to sway him against his better judgment. “Well, actually I’m not sure yet, but this place is starting to grow on me.”

Zoe: It's real, she's gone. I don't know who has her but I'm getting her back. Someone called the Warmonger is sending threatening texts to a variety of people. Apparently this is what happens when you don't follow through with their demands.
Zoe: Can you do some research in the Church? See if any if this correlates to Revelation and the Four Horsemen? I think this may be the gear up for War. There were threatening messages from someone called the Sin Eater before Pestilence surfaced.
Zack: Damn. Hopefully this doesn't become some kind of epidemic. Do you know if Maria received a text from this Warmonger character?
Zack: Of course. I'll get right on it and let you know if I dig up anything.

starofgrace:
Grace shook his hand, almost relaxing to know that he hadn’t been from around the area ( that he hadn’t been familiar with the media buzz ). And perhaps they could both be equally lost when it came to learning things. “ – I’m Grace, and where did you move from, Zack?”
The Churches did have a powerful influence, and the actress wouldn’t even have realized it had she not stepped out of the Hollywood bubble. She supposed there was still much to learn: such as the intricate relationships that seemed to be intermingling for years. “Definitely,  I didn’t know anything about them before moving here.”
Grace paused, trying to gather her thoughts to answer his next question, “… I - I think they both have their own pros and cons. Personally, I find myself … leaning towards the Saints. At the same time, my interactions with the sinners haven’t been awful,” Except for one, thanks to Satan.
“What about you, what’s your stance?”
Tumblr media
“That’s why delivery of lines is crucial,” Grace laughed.
“Good to meet you, Grace.” He smiled, giving her hand a brief shake. “I came here from Kansas. LA’s a bit bigger than I’m used to, but I like it so far. What about you? Where’d you move here from?”
Head tilted and fingers absently drumming on the counter, he listened to her intently, nodding encouragingly when he sensed her hesitation. Choice was the only really power people had in life, the only thing they had control over. And information was stepping stone. Zack was glad to see that Grace seemed to respect the gravity of this particular choice and was smart enough to weigh it.
The corner of his mouth ticked up slightly when he learned she was favoring the Saints. In his mind, the church wasn’t a choice. It was pretty black and white – right over wrong, good over evil, and Saints over Sinners. Period. He didn’t know why there was so much contention in LA. Maybe all the bright city lights were blurring the lines, making the choice a hazy one.
“My stance?” His hand gravitated to his chest for emphasis. “I’m with the Saints all the way. But I mean, I grew up in the Church, so I gotta root for the home team.” He tossed her a grin before directing his attention to the barista who’d arrived with their orders. He accepted the coffees from the young man, handing Grace her drink. He thanked the man before returning his full attention to the actress. “And that’s really what the Church is to me,” he continued, his voice leavened with sincerity. “It’s always felt like home. A safe space full of people who have your best interest at heart. ”
His nose crinkled as soon as he’d heard what he said and his head dipped in embarrassment. “Wow, that didn’t sound as corny in my head. Guess you can take the boy out of Kansas.” His voice trailed off, the ‘but you can’t take Kansas out of the boy’ left unsaid.
Tumblr media
“Guess that means I need to start working on my British accent.”

Zoe: Please help me find her and get her home safely. Please.
Zack: Oh man. I really had hoped it was some kind of hoax.
Zack: I don't know how I can help but I'm here if you need me.

I hope that’s all this is. Though my gut says this isn’t an art piece. And things are going to get much, much worse. Someone didn’t follow the rules and is getting punished now.
Tumblr media
If it is real, and I sincerely hope it’s not, it seems like a bit of an overreaction. Seems like more of a tantrum than a punishment if you ask me.

I wouldn’t call Maria that good of a performer considering she refuses to do karaoke with me.

Snuff films are a far cry from karaoke, but she looked pretty convincing to me.

saltwaterkezia:
Kezia laughed lightly, shaking her head. “Not quite that morbid, not yet.” Zach – it was a good name, she thought it fit him. And, if he was giving her name, maybe that meant he was planning on coming back. That would be good. They cold use all the stability they could get with Jairus… With things as they were.
“Well, it doesn’t really matter if I like it,” she countered with a smile. His less than thrilled expression had her face falling though. Had she gotten the proportions wrong? Too much honey? Or too much pistachio – the nuts could have mopped up a lot of the sweetness and that might have been made things too bitter. Or maybe she had just guessed wrong with some of the combinations – it wasn’t likely, didn’t happen often, but was still a possibility.
She had her mouth open to apologize, already reaching for a clean blender to make him a replacement when he gave up the ghost. A relieved laugh wound through her chest. “Oh good! Jeez, I was worried I had lost a new customer before even earning you.” She set about cleaning the equipment she had used. “I’m glad you like it. First one’s one me, in fact. As long as you promise to come back for another.”
Tumblr media
“I have to say I would honestly come back for another of your secret blends, especially if they all taste as good as this.” He gave the glass a small shake for emphasis. “You must get a lot of the regulars here, huh?”
If the quality of the product didn’t promote repeat customers, he was sure Kezia’s upbeat attitude would do the trick. Her kindness brought a genuine smile to his face and eased some of his concerns about taking on the smoothie bar.
Running the family business in Kansas was one thing, but owning a restaurant was a horse of a different color. If you asked him, he’d tell you he succeeded because he had to. His family’s home, their well-being, had depended on it.  Zack, ever the problem solver, just did what he did best – analyzed the variables and formulated a solution. His role in the business was nothing more than a glorified number cruncher. He kept the books and did the math, but his parents had really done all the heavy lifting. It was their knowledge and teaching ability that really got the company up and running. But to hear his parents tell it, Zack had spun straw into gold.
In reality, Zack had just used common sense. And common sense was telling him that taking on a restaurant was risky. Announcing his ownership hadn’t been in his immediate plans. He still wasn’t sure if he was going to keep it but he didn’t feel right misleading Kezia into thinking he was just a run-of-the-mill customer.
“I have a bit of a confession to make,” he stage whispered, leaning in conspiratorially. “I didn’t come here for the smoothies. At least not just for the smoothies.” He paused, sitting his jar on the counter and turned his full attention to the girl on the other side of it. “It’s kind of a bizarre story but I actually just inherited this place.”

starofgrace:
“I’m trying to be – I actually moved to the area recently,” Grace clarified. She had been living inside a bubble; and now it was time to step out of her comfort zone, to explore.
“I’m still learning and trying to make sense of things; like the Churches around here. Granted, I’ve managed to get enough information to form an opinion.” She had even decided which Church suited her the most, which one would be the best option to join.
Tumblr media
“You could always act like Gordan Ramsey, bet they won’t notice a difference,” she suggested, smiling. It was easy to pretend ( to invest in characters ). Then again, perhaps that had been her own way of coping.
Zack’s eyes brightened when he heard she was a fellow newcomer. “Really? I actually just moved here myself.” He smiled in appreciation of having possibly found a kindred spirit. “I’m Zack, by the way.” Grinning, he held out his hand in offering for her to shake. “It’s nice to meet someone who’s in the same boat so to speak.”
Since arriving in LA, he’d felt a bit out of place and out of his depth. Back in Kansas, his place in life had practically been cemented – dutiful son, protective big brother, devoted churchgoer. Those roots ran deep into his core, tethering him to his home life and all the weight that came with it. He liked being his family’s support system, but he couldn’t deny that he was looking forward to being on his own. That freedom was almost heady.
Excitement shifted into curiosity at the mention of the churches. Though he personally never doubted that the Church of Saints was where he belonged, he could respect folks who were questioning. Zack wondered if Grace was affiliated with the Sinners, but didn’t want to pry by flat out asking her.  “I’ve heard the Church scene big around here.” He settled his weight against the counter, soft eyes studying the young actress curiously. “What do you make of all the Saints and Sinners and whatnot?”
Tumblr media
He laughed at the mental image her suggestion conjured in his head. “Oh man, I could, but I doubt they’d appreciate me calling them donkeys or slamming plates on the ground.”
