i wish that instead of trying to make a weird team 7 parallel out of the sannin he’d explored their like, actual character traits, because the sannin in theory are a really interesting concept
like all three of their obsessions / personalities are direct responses to the trauma of war:
orochimaru fears death because he’s seen so much of it, because he’s seen so many people die screaming and begging for life that he’s both numb to it and horrified by the thought of it, and thus his experiments into immortality begin there
jiraiya desperately seeks out no-strings-attached sex because he’s both desperate for human connection and scared of losing anyone
and tsunade is addicted to drinking and gambling because she’s a retired ninja who doesn’t want to fight anymore, but has also spend her whole life fighting, so she’s deeply bored by normal life and is chasing an adrenaline rush
so like… you have these three ninja who are literally the most powerful ninja ever to live, supposedly, the literal legends who singlehandedly revolutionized the ninja world and ended the second world war, but then it shows you what the cost of doing those things was, and how yes they were “heroes” and legends and whatever else, but they also paid a steep price for it

A chill cuts through the autumn air as Sasuke waits for his brother to pick him up. The kindergarten playground is quiet except for the creaking of the swing that he sits on as he waits. With every passing second his mood grows sour. All the other kids had already been picked up long ago, he is the only one still waiting. He wonders if Itachi nii-san will make up for his delay by playing with him when they get home, and suddenly perks up at the thought. In his mind he devises how he will pout and look disappointed to really drive home the guilt, when the silence of the playground is interrupted by a scream.
Startled, Sasuke whips in the direction of the sound. It came from the adjacent woods, and nii-san had told him strictly to never leave the kindergarten campus. Besides, he is only a kid. He will just get in the way, he reasons.
‘Then why am I doing it?’ he wonders as his legs move on their own accord, tugging him across some invisible string to where the sound came from.

one of sarada’s earliest memories comprise of seeing a lot of the intimidating expanse of her parents’ closed door, looming large over her tiny body. there are times papa goes days without greeting the light of day, or talking to mama, or tucking her in at bedtime. mama only tells her he is unwell, that he suffers an ailment of the heart, which makes him crave the dark of his room. sarada learns patience this way. from her mother. because they wait, always eyeing his closed door but never pushing their way in. eventually, papa will reemerge and he will be just as wistfully affectionate as he is on his good days. and things go back to normal for a while, until his heart clenches, and he gets that glassy look in his eyes again.

seasons change, mama grows prettier and scarier, papa speaks less with his eyes and more with his words, and sarada grows taller and more curious. why do the villagers look at papa funny? why doesn’t she have two sets of grandparents like most kids in the neighborhood? why isn’t uncle itachi’s name engraved in the village memorial stone if he gave his life for the village? mama is all smiles and distractions whenever sarada brings these peculiarities up, while papa shuts down completely. she doesn’t realize what is going on under the surface, but she sees that her parents work as one unit. she realizes that mama is always there to magically conjure popsicles and dangos out of thin air whenever papa looks like he has seen a ghost. it’s like your hands reflexively planting on the ground, so you don’t fall on your face when your legs give in for whatever reason. sarada would rather have her questions answered, even if it meant getting dirt on her face.
