For the first time since Thor 1, Loki is truly free.
No more Thanos. No having to pretend to be dead to hide from Thanos. No imprisonment by Odin. No having to pretend to be Odin. Not under the influence of the sceptre. No having to maintain a precarious existence by currying favour with the Grandmaster. Not just a temporary release under the watchful eye of Thor. But truly free.
Maybe not free from his past, but free to have control over his own life.
I wonder who he will become?

also a thought on fat-thor. i had friend (who is fat) say that he understood my reaction to wonder woman and captain marvel (finally seeing a female hero) bc finally he got to see a fat hero on screen. i thought that was a pretty nice comment and yes even though it’s played for the laughs some people might have that reaction to thor in endgame.
That’s the one of the things Endgame got right, I think. I was expecting a Rocky-esque “getting in shape” sequence any minute because that would make the most sense with the comedic way they were treating Thor’s issues, but they didn’t make him lose weight. (Maybe they didn’t have time, but I hope this was a conscious decision insteady of shoddy, hasty writing.) He armored up and fought Thanos as-is in one of the most awesome, iconic moments in Avengers cinematic history (and I might be a little biased but oh well, everyone knows I love Thor).
Elaborating on this concept further, Thor has always been the default “hot” character; that’s kind of been his status in the MCU for years, so it’s really interesting to see who/what he becomes once his “hotness” factor has been taken away.
So far he’s had long golden hair shorn off. He’s had his eye gouged out. He’s been left scarred. Now, five years later, he’s overweight, ungroomed, hair matted and greasy, at the lowest point of his life. But you know what? The first moment I saw him, I still thought he was awesome. I think a lot of us did. And we felt his pain; we’ve all been where he’s at, some of us more than others. We know how low he feels. And then to see him slowly start to rise above his illness and reclaim his sense of self-worth, when he took up his axe and started kicking ass again, we cheered him on all the harder because we know the internal struggles he had to tackle to get to that moment. That was wonderful to see.
I said once that there is nothing Thor can do to make himself “ugly”. His inner beauty and personality–his kindness, his forgiveness, his sense of humor, his humility–is as integral to his character as his strength. Everything visual about him is just a bonus. I think this aspect of his arc in Endgame, intentional or not, just reinforces that notion. Thor will always be marvelous. ⚡💛
