hesitation | yan childe x reader
warnings: chasing, manipulation, and stockholm syndrome
Tumblr media
Each step you take through the snow beneath you is accompanied by the numbing sensation in your toes. Despite your best efforts, you are unable to hold back the hush of panicked breathing as you navigate your way through the woods. The previous burning love for snow you once held has now burnt to ashes as you develop a hatred for it. You weren’t a Snezhnayan native, nor were you a track star. The disadvantage you stand to suffer in your current predicament as you run from Tartaglia is evidently clear.
“I’m not too sure I like this game we’re playing.” The nerve that bastard has to taunt. Pushing your thoughts aside the thing on you mind stands clear. You have two choices.
You can choose to stop now and go back. Or, run until a safe place is in sight wherever in Teyvat that might be. Stopping means preparing for the worst when you are in his possession again. What the worst is? That remains a question, though you would rather not know. The latter of course increases the risk of collapsing, him catching you, and receiving an even more severe punishment. It’s obvious what the choice is. In reality there is none.
Continuing your tread through the snow you curse yourself internally. The thought slips into your head you wonder if one more sip of coffee, one more second invested in tying your hair up, one more step taken, or just one more breath taken would have changed your current situation. Could anything have prevented you from meeting him?
Your thoughts end abruptly at words thrown through the air. “Hm, you truly are stubborn as ever, it’s comedic really.”
As your breath caught at his words, you uttered the first words that came to mind, yelling loudly from ahead and shouting, "Shu-shut up!" Just as soon as that surge of courage began, it ended, and you quickly regretted that decision. You sound pathetic.
You dread the familiar sound that rings through the air: that stupid cocky laugh.
Panic flows through you. Quickly looking back your eyes widen in the process, finding yourself facing blue orbs. Its clear he's picking up the pace. The gap between you and him is closing by the second. In return, you pick up your pace, continuing to tread through the thick snow of Snezhnaya.
“Y/N, you’re cold, I can hear it in your voice. You realize it truly is only a matter of time before that willpower of yours dies out.” He’s right. It’s simply a matter of who can last the longest, who has the stronger willpower. You know Ajax won’t give up until you’re in his arms. As hard as it is, you too cannot give up. This is your future on the line. Your freedom. But, you feel like you’re on the brink of collapsing. Willpower may get you through mentally. But physically, Ajax is unmatched. His words, come to mind It’s only a matter of time. Is he right? You bite your tongue and shake your head, choosing to focus on the task at hand: get the hell away, and fast.
This cat and mouse game continues as your pace slows with each step, trying to keep your open with each breath as exhaustion sets in. Tartaglia’s words linger in the back of your head. It’s only a matter of time. A matter of time. Time. Maybe your true enemy is time. If only you had more time you’d be back in Fontaine? If only you had more time you’d be even a step ahead. But that isn’t the case, is it? You feel pathetic as your pace slows.
“Do you even truly want this?” His sudden words surprise you compared to the previous silence but the meaning of his words is what causes your eyes widen. “Where will you go to? Or rather, the bigger question of who will you go to?” His words bring your movement to a halt, standing meekly in the snow. You hadn’t though of this, had you?
“Wherever you go, they won’t accept someone like you.” Your breath hitches as he continues, mustering up the small fire inside you that still burned you mutter under your breath, “Shut up.” He’s lying, you know it. But his words continue. “You have no where to go.” “Shut up.” Your voice rises as you stutter. Watching as a shadow approaches in the white snow before you, you pause, feeling tears sting your eyes.
“You only have me, and you know that.” He speaks softly as you stare into the snow not daring to look back.
“SHUT UP, DAMMIT!” The tears that previously surfaced now came pouring as exhaustion dawned upon you. Raising your hands to your face you pause, falling onto your knees in distress.
“You’re lying, you’re lying, you’re lying, stop it, please, stop it!” Your meek posture shows as you slam your curled fists into the snow, tears streaming down your cheeks.
Ajax had always explained that every bruise and scar you have has been the result of a struggle that required unwavering determination. As you stare down at your hands covered in scars and bruises alike from your struggle through Snezhnaya in search of freedom, you wonder if your battle was over. Had you lost? Did you not have enough determination to get to what you wanted to so badly? Had it all been a waste? He’s not right. Is he?
Did you do this all for nothing?
Do you really have no one?
Does no one love you?
The sudden weight shift upon you is evident as his chin finds its place on your shoulder. His hands wrapping around your waist as you shake, tears flowing down.
“I love you.” The words he speaks are calm, comforting. But deep below lies the presence of his sinister pleasure. Letting your hands fall to the ground in defeat you let the words fall from your mouth. You stare in disbelief, hesitating to speak.
“Please don’t leave me.”
Tumblr media
You have always been the center of attention for Ajax. Even when you find yourself performing the simplest of tasks he is unable to help the smile that runs across his face. It has been quite some time since you last visited Liyue. After so much time spent in Snezhnaya with Ajax, you'd grown accustomed to the cold atmosphere and silence of the townsfolk.  As you look down at the city folk below from the balcony, each with their own story, you can't help but smile a little. It’s truly beautiful here.
A familiar voice beside you brings you back from your own little world. Raising your head you meet blue eyes belonging to Ajax, staring at you from across the table with a smile.
“Mind helping me?” Your attention is drawn to his hands as he struggles with a pair of chopsticks in his hands.
“I’ve told you probably a dozen times already!” Laughing, you lay down your chopsticks and place your hands upon his, adjusting his fingers' posture on the wood. Returning your hands your own bowl you perk a brow.
“Go on, Mr. I know everything!” You watch intently as he once again fails to hold up his posture. Letting out a loud laugh you bring your hand to your mouth trying to stifle the laugh. From the corner of your eye you watch as he meekly sets the chopsticks down.
“Ajax, you have too much pride to admit you can’t do such a simple thing!” You taunt, setting your chopsticks down and leaning forward to rest your head on your chin. With a sigh he smiles,“Well, are you up for dessert?” He questioned.
“What a stupid question.” You hummed, watching as he stood up from his chair, dusting himself off. Leaving a small bag of mora on the table he nodded towards the waitress before extending his hand towards you. Gazing up you extended your arm, placing you palm onto his. You’d gotten used to feeling his tight grip upon your hand.
Continuing your small walk towards the stairs Ajax pauses, causing you to come to a halt. Glancing at him with furrowed eyebrows you cock your head to the side in confusion.
“I love you.” The words that roll off his tongue come out of no where.
“I love you too.” You smile softly, continuing your walk. On Tartaglia’s face remained a smile though unbeknownst to you he was celebrating a small victory, the smile on his face was for a different reason.
You didn’t hesitate anymore.

psychic staring effect | yan childe x reader
i wrote this when i was tired and had no idea where the story was going to go. had some trouble translating too >.<
this is sort of like a modern au but only because it involves google and a phone.
warnings: stalking, sayings like ‘someone is behind you.’
Tumblr media
psychic staring effect:  the psychic staring effect (sometimes called scopaesthesia) is a supposed phenomenon in which humans detect being stared at by extrasensory means.
Tumblr media
how to tell if you’re being watched
“This is stupid.” The words laced with annoyance come from your mouth as you glare at the typed in words sitting in Google’s search bar. A sigh of defeat releases and you lean back against the frame of the bed.
That stupid feeling. It’s like your brain is telling you you’re stupid for even thinking such things in the first place, but at the same time is the one alerting you that such things aren't normal. Waking up with an indent on the opposite side of the bed, hearing two sets of feet tap against the pavement as you walk when it should only be one, leaving the shower and seeing hearts on the steamy mirror.
It's been awhile since you visited the Northland Bank, a trip that was only meant to help your friend ask for a loan and to give you reason to leave the house. However, the trip only cemented your commitment to staying home. After that trip, you swear you can see a figure always lurking behind you, though when the chance comes to get a glance at the mystery, the culprit reveals itself to be, well no one.
You feel like an idiot even thinking such things in first place, its obvious: nothing is there. Nothing at all. But it’s a feeling you can’t shake off. Unexplainable things are happening, finding a large bag of mora on your kitchen counter doesn’t just happen, though when searching for the culprit there is nothing but your own shadow behind you only helping to convince you that you’re slowly going insane.
It’s been like this for months. Something you can’t simply shake off.
Though, whether you should convince yourself it’s all a hallucination or that the gut feeling inside you is true, that's a decision for when the time comes. Instead, you choose to set it aside for the night in an attempt to get some much needed rest after a long day.
Tumblr media
It’s a reoccurring dream. One that seems to end so fast yet when you wake up hours later it proves to be the contrast.
In the dream you find yourself standing in a bathroom, staring at the loading search screen on the phone below you. A feeling of panic is in your body but you’ve never found what the cause of such a feeling was. Someone is behind you, you know it. But the most you’ve ever seen of him is a single red earring. That’s the only glimpse you can ever get of the mystery man, for when you turn your head to identify the person you find the scenario ending just as fast as it started.
Your eyes open in the same place you were before: the comfort of your own bed.
A sigh comes from your mouth as you roll over, smothering a pillow over your head with a groan. “Dammit!” You yell into the pillow, quickly removing it and throwing it to the side. You lay still, staring at the ceiling above you before reaching your hand out to grasp your phone.
Curiosity always gets the best of you. And it’s evident as you quickly type away at the screen.
who are the people in our dreams
Our mind is not inventing faces – in our dreams, we see real faces of real people that we have seen during our life but may not know or remember.
You’ve lived in Liyue your whole life, never traveled out of the land and practically know everyone in Liyue Harbor like the back of your hand. But, you can’t pinpoint a red earring. You swear you’ve seen it before but no one comes to mind.
“Someone you may not know.” You mutter to yourself, perking an eyebrow at the screen.
That is the most logical explanation, but even something about that irks you. Why would someone so irrelevant like a stranger, be so present in your dreams?
Tumblr media
You had met him a few weeks ago. He had claimed to be a toy seller from Sneznhaya, an unusual occupation for a man carrying around a bow and arrow, however you put no question towards it.  A kind man he was, always doing lavish things for you, helping you with hard commissions, and letting you ramble upon him. And that's just what you were doing as you find yourself rambling onto him right now.
“Look, it just feels like someone's been watching me, even on the way here I swear I could just feel it,” You state to your friend, Tartaglia, leaning against the counter as he prepares snacks “a-and I swear someone is watching me but whenever I turn there's no one there!”
“You’re probably just imagining things, I’m sure you’re just stressed with everything going on.” He hummed, glancing up from the food he was preparing to raise an eyebrow at your current predicament.
“But that doesn’t explain hearts on the bathroom mirror! Or even a bag of mora on my counter!” You ramble in distress, resting you chin on your hand.
“Maybe your secret admirer is a ghost?” He laughs.
“Tartaglia!” You groan, glancing up with a glare.
“Ok, ok! It’s probably just left from when your niece visited. You’re fine! As for the mora, well maybe you just misplaced it?” He smiles, turning around to grab a bowl.
Your breath tightens at his words. When did Tartaglia get word you had a niece? You've known each other for only a few weeks at most. You last saw her some months ago.
He turns around at the sudden silence, his blue eyes narrowing with a playful smile as he regards your body language intently, holding his gaze for almost too long. Quickly pulling yourself together you force out a laugh.
“A-ahaha! You’re probably right, I do misplace things easily!” You laugh, trying to play it off. He stayed silent in response, simply staring at you as if he was trying to analyze something.
“Indeed.” He stated, turning around once again to continue his previous task.
“Your house is really nice, you must make a good living to get a home with a view of the shore.” You smiled, trying to ease the tension in the room. Leaning off the counter you make your way across the room towards the large window that displayed the ocean before you.
“It’s worth the view, I’d say.” He chuckled, glancing from the kitchen to your figure across the room. You smile, glancing down at the window sill decorated with small trinkets.
“You didn’t tell me you collected starconches.” You chuckled, trying to keep the conversation as if nothing happened seconds ago.
“I need to take you down to the beach sometime soon, it’s beautiful this time of season to collect shells.” Tartaglia hummed. As you analyzed the row of seashells your eyes made contact with a familiar red gem.
Your eyes widened, staring down at the earring. The earring in your dreams.
“Definitely! Hey, um I have to go to the bathroom, what direction is it?” You turned around, reaching for the phone in your pocket. He paused, turning around with a smile and staring at you, his gaze lasting a tad too long for normal and humming.
“Just around the corner!” He smiled, and you followed just that.
There's a familiar feeling to the one you've grown used to these past months. Knowing your being watched. Feeling the gaze of eyes on your figure from afar.
And as you walk away from Tartaglia you feel just that.
Your eyebrows furrow as you enter the small room, your breathing becoming more rapid by the minute, as you desperately seek answers to the question that has been weighing on your mind ever since seeing the red gem. Pulling out your phone you tap your thumbs rapidly against the screen.
can dreams predict our future
Waiting for the results load, your breathing accelerates, panic setting in. Letting your hand touch the granite on the counter, you pause. Realization hits you as you realize you have experienced this feeling in your dreams.
The panic in your dream.
Reaching for your phone with shaking hands, you pick up the device now with text present. As you scan the top result, your breath quickens as you do a double take of the words before you.
Precognitive dreams, in simple terms, are any dreams that give you information about the future you wouldn't otherwise have.
You can feel it.
You can feel the stare.
Someone’s behind you.
The weight change on your shoulder becomes evident as you feel hot breath hitting your neck. When you slowly raise your head to look in the mirror you find yourself frozen in fear.
Red hair and blue eyes stare back at you as a red gem dangles from his ear, his chin rests on your shoulder, glancing down at your phone.
“How cute, you've been dreaming of me?”

limerence: the state of being infatuated or obsessed with another person
Tumblr media
“Thank you for providing me your kindness, Mr. Zhongli.” You smiled, letting your hands slowly wrap around the porcelain cup adorned with designs of gold. It seemed to fit the man’s mysterious aura: truly lavish.
After an encounter, more so a dilemma with a small village in Liyue which left you seconds away from your inevitable fate of hanging by a rope. To be fair, sure, possibly you shouldn’t have accidentally set fire to half the village. But having a pyro vision has its downsides too, no?
Although it left you questioning why it seemed he had such an impact on the small village, all the mattered is that you still sat in flesh and bone and not six feet under.
Truly, he was a kind man, even inviting you into his abode for a cup of tea and a residence for the meantime. You were an adventurer from Fontaine, traveling to all the seven nations in search of, well nothing. Armed with only a pyro vision and a spear you were determined to travel the world. Liyue Harbor was just one of your many stops, and to your delight it was truly a fascinating and astonishingly beautiful place.
“Ah, there’s no need for formalities. I do think we are well acquainted by now.” He hummed, observing how you lifted the cup to your lips, your eyes widening as the scorching substance hit your tongue. You quickly placed the porcelain cup down, a light laugh emerging from your lips as a smile soon followed.
“Really, I don’t know how I could ever repay you.” Resting your finger tips upon the cup and frowning as you stared at the liquid in deep thought.
“I’d give you my life if I could.” You laughed, furrowing your eyebrows with a sigh.
“We could arrange for that.” Your eyes widened, staring down at the cup of tea with a dumbfounded expression. Quickly composing yourself, a laugh quickly arose from your mouth, though sounding more panicked than natural.
“Ah, I didn’t imagine you’d be a man of comedy.” You chuckled, cocking your head to the side and letting your hand fall from the cup down to your waist, toying with the pyro vision by your side. Sure, you weren’t in danger, just force of habit.
“I’m afraid I do not understand.” There go the wide eyes once again.
“Oh- your comment, before?” You looked up, now gripping the red orb by your side as more of a safety precaution than anything, worry seeping through your bones but that stupid voice in your head told you Mr. Zhongli couldn’t hurt a fly. Tension rose in your throat, watching as his amber orbs slowly gaze over your expression.
“Ah, I see.” A wave of relief washed over your body. Social cues truly aren’t just his thing. We all have our quirks though, no?
“You don't take my word?” He hummed, furrowing his eyebrows. The 10 seconds of relief now came crashing down, setting you back to your state of panic.
“I do believe it is a fair trade. On my part, saving your life from harm and death and as for your part, giving me yourself in return.” He wasn’t joking.
“I’m sorry, but you’ve got to be mistaken. We had no such agreement before this!” You raised your voice, listening as a hum of what seemed to be displeasure released from his mouth. He lifted his hand, bringing it to his chin as if in thought. “I do value fairness greatly.”
“You’re out of your mind, no part of this is fair! There was no mention of such a thing?” He seemed to be confused, taking in your words.
“Ah, you seem to misunderstand. I simply intend to establish a marriage. To bind you to my side, for eternity that is.” Well, now it was your turn to be confused. “Marriage? Goodness gracious, we met, what? Two days ago? My apologies Mr. Zhongli, but in no way do I intend to marry you. I haven’t a clue what you speak about.” You stated, rising from your seat and preparing for your departure.
“That does not seem like a wise choice, Y/N.” Your body tensed, was this a threat? No. You are fine. A huff of breath released from your mouth as you readied yourself once again, walking towards the door and making your departure with no more exchanged words.
“What a shame.” Zhongli hummed with a frown, staring at the door you’d made your sudden leave from.
Tumblr media
Putting the events of a few days ago behind, it truly was difficult to leave Liyue Harbor. Residents of the city were welcoming and kind, helping a foreigner with open hands. Though all good things must come to an end at some point.
As you traveled your way through Liyue, passing by ruin after ruin the thought of your soon adventures in Mondstadt seemed more intriguing by the second. Maybe you do get excited too easily, but you can't help the way your daydreams take over reality. It does make time fly by faster though.
After days of travel through a variety of terrain, soon you find yourself at Wangshu Inn, looking for a night's rest. It does seem as though everything in Liyue is elegant, and this place is most certainly no different. To say the least you were excited to stay in such a place.
With your bag in hand, you slowly make your way across the balcony of the building towards your room, letting your eyes gaze upon the stars in the sky. A sigh releases from you as you stop your short walk and make your way towards the edge of the balcony, staring up at the stars in all their glory.
In sight is Celestia itself. Perhaps one day you could visit. After all, this is only the beginning of your adventures. With so many more to come maybe you could ascend there one day.
“Pathetic.” The words catch you off guard as your eyes widen, quickly turning to meet the raspy voice only to find yourself knocked to the ground, your belongings and spear shoved to the side. An excruciating pain made its presence upon your leg and as you let out a loud groan, you open your eyes and are met with a black and teal-haired man staring down at you with a malicious glare.
Your eyes widen in horror as you look down to the source of the pain: a large spear present in your calf leaving you to watch as blood seeped out. The agonizingly slow speed as to which he pulls the spear from your skin makes tears surface upon your eyes. And soon after you find the tip of the same spear pointed at your neck.
“Who are you?” You muttered through gritted teeth, glaring at him with watery eyes. It hurt so bad, more pain than you’d ever felt before.
“It doesn’t concern you as to who I am, you are only a mere mortal.” Your breath hitches as you scan over his body and take sight of the mask on his side.
“Y- you’re an adepti?” You whispered, your voice shaky. “Aren’t you supposed to be protecting hum-”
A cry of pain releases from your mouth as the spear once pointed in your neck now finds itself sunken into your thigh.
“Did I say you could speak?” His voice is raspy, it sounds as though it’s strained from screaming, but you’re the one screaming. Tears fall from your eyes as you wait for your fate to be sealed. Beside you you can hear footsteps upon the wooden balcony, a surge of hope rushes through you only to come back down to horror as quickly as it lasted.
The same deep hum you’d despised now evident once again.
“It seems you are in trouble?” It was as if he was asking a question more than making a statement as if you weren’t sitting in a pool of your own blood with a spear pointed at your throat. You reach your arm out in a desperate attempt to grasp your spear, biting your lips to stop the sobs from spilling once again.
“Zhongli, please-” In your arm this time the spear plunges down on.
“Do not speak to Rex Lapis in such a disrespectful manner.” The adepti snaps, glaring down at you. Silence surfaces as your sobs grow louder, and soon you find yourself coming to realization.
Rex Lapis? No no, there has to be a mistake. But it all makes sense? The same man who took you in so humbly now kneels beside you watching you suffer. Is this who Rex Lapis, the god of contracts and war truly is?
As he kneels by your side, his gloved hand delicately makes its way down your cheek, wiping the tears from your face.
“Please help me.” You whisper, you sound truly pathetic. But you’d rather look pathetic than give up on life so easily.
“I’ll do anything.” You ever so quietly whisper out. You knew you didn’t want what would come next, but you couldn’t give up. Not yet.
“Anything?” He hums as if he found the scene before him amusing. The eye contact made between his amber eyes and your e/c orbs sends shivers down your spine.
He truly wants this. He’s crazy.
You find yourself nodding your head in hesitance, you don’t want this.
“Y/n, do you agree to stay bound to my side in marriage for eternity?” Your breath hitches, eyes widening in horror, there’s no going back on this. There truly isn’t.
Is this worth your life?
“Yes.”
