Do you need a special license to drive an RV? And which RV class needs a special license? These are the most common question asked by the RV community today. The simple answer to these questions is: No, you don’t need a special license to drive most of the RVs in the US.   Are you ready to rent an RV to enjoy this summer then wait and take a look at these important tips before you rent an RV? Renting an RV is the best way to experience the fun of a trip. There are many things that you have to know before you rent an RV such as best RV renting companies, type of RVs, Gas mileage, fare, campgrounds, and others. But before that Click here to get RV rental now. Let’s see what are the tips!   Note- This article contains affiliate links so when you purchase a product through these links we get a small commission, without any extra cost to you, (the money is used to run this site and to give salaries to the team) But, this did not affect our reviewing decision. We have selected what is best in the market to help you out in buying the best product.
1. First Make A Budget
Making a budget will ensure that you will know an estimated expenditure that is going to happen on the trip. It will include renting an RV, reservation of campground, other outdoor activities, essential things like food, fuel, and others. By making a budget you will know where to spend more and where less. Keep in mind about the miscellaneous expenses that may pop up from nowhere.
2. Plan Your Trip
If you have planned the trip then you will spend less time thinking about what to do next. It also helps to keep things going and you will know what to do after a certain thing. To get help use RV Trip Wizard it will let you plan campgrounds, refueling, and others.
3. Book In Advance
I am talking about everything from RV to campgrounds. The reason is during peak season, summers, and winter vacations there is more demand for RVs than supply. You don't want to end up finding anything. You may have to book weeks or months in advance so that you find the right RV and of course the desired campground. There is a good chance that by booking in advance you get the right spot. Take for example the Yellowstone National Park, most of the restaurant and the campgrounds are booked a year in advance. That’s the level of demand! Yes, if you have just started do not get disappointed as it is not the case with every campground but you may have to settle with a not so popular campground or a not so perfect RV. You can do the advanced booking of the campgrounds with the help of RoverPass they will help you to book RV resorts easily and it will be affordable too. Remember, the longer time you book the more you can save.
4. Book Online
Booking online will not only save money but also there will be peace of mind that wherever you are going you have a reserved place. Many times there are deals so you can even get other things at less price. There is a good website called Viator where you can get good deals. There is one more way you can book and save is through a browser extension called Honey. You have to install it in the browser and you will be able to save money on lots of websites. With the help of the Honey, you will shop normally and it will apply the discount to your cart. You can also get a discount at big online stores such as Amazon.
5. Make A Secure Online Payment
Online payment is always a risk. There are many frauds done every day online. There are some steps which you can take to make a secure online payment: 1. Use a dedicated computer 2. Avoid public Wi-Fi and computers 3. Always pay online when you are on a secure encrypted website like those which use the https version of the web such as Outdoorsy (link) and RVshare.
6. Roadside Assistance Is A Good Way To Get Help
While traveling there can be emergencies like a flat tire, mechanical failure and kinds of stuff like that. You should be ready for it by joining some good clubs such a Good Sam, Escapees. You will be able to travel with peace of mind. They come in rescue when you are in trouble and standing at the side of the road is a big mood swinger and disappointment. No one wants it.
7. Compare The RV Pricing
Whenever you are searching for an RV for rent always try to compare the prices of multiple RVs. These prices vary according to the type of RV, location of renting, duration, distance and time of year. Just like a car rental, you have to pay a daily rate for your RV rental and the bigger the RV is the bigger price you have to pay. In addition to this, you have to pay per mile which is generally 50 cents to 1 dollar. To find the best deal go through maximum searches you can. The more you search the more option you have. Further Reading: BEST RV RENTAL COMPANIES COMPARED
8. Select The Best Type Of RV
If you are not from another galaxy, you must know that there are different types of RVs on this planet. Each one has different features, price, and comfort. To know the best for you have to know them in detail. Here is the list of the most common type of RVs: 1. Class A Motorhome: this one is the largest of the motorhome and RV, which has a dining area, lounge, kitchen, bathroom with shower and a separate bedroom. It is luxurious, spacious and comfortable, it will feel like you are traveling in a good hotel room. There are also slide outs that increase the living space inside. It is also most difficult to drive and most costly to buy and rent. Class A is better for large families or people who want more space. 2. Class B Motorhome: it is also called van conversion, it is an extended version of a van with a raised roof. You get a toilet, kitchen, bed, dinette and other things but with less space than Class A Motorhome. Good for couples with 1 or 2 kids. 3. Class C Motorhome: this one is built on a truck chassis with an extra cab over the driver's compartment. You will often find a bed in this compartment. These motorhomes also have a separate kitchen, dining area, and a bathroom. It is best for families who do not want Class A. 4. Travel Trailer: this is an RV that is pulled by a car or truck. They are available in all sizes from 10 feet to 40 feet long. The interior of a travel trailer varies a lot depending upon the taste of the owner. But, generally, there is a lounge, kitchen, dinette, bathroom and a separate bathroom in most of them. Before renting make sure your vehicle can tow it or you have to rent a car/SUV too. Further Reading: RECREATIONAL VEHICLE: THE COMPLETE GUIDE
9. Research About The RV Campgrounds
You have to select the campground that you want to visit. You must read the reviews that people have shared on different websites, know about the campground. Also, there are limitations on how long RV you can park at these campgrounds especially at National Park Campgrounds. Further Reading: IDEAL RV LENGTH FOR FITTING INTO NATIONAL PARK CAMPSITES Private RV parks and campgrounds are generally expensive than discounted communities such as Escapees RV Club.
10. RV Parks Extras
The RV parks and campgrounds can also have extra fees that you need to check for. These fees are generally paid at the time of reservation, but there can be some additional fees that will come in effect when you arrive at the campground. Additional fees are paid for additional nights at the campground, propane, generator fee or firewood. It can also add transportation such as shuttle service or using public transport services.
11. RV Rental Deposit & Other Fees
You have to make one deposit at least one while renting your RV. This is like token money which is made when you are making your reservation in order to hold your reservation before the final price of your rental. Security Deposit: There is also a security deposit that is taken in nearly every rental service. This money is refundable and held until you return the RV safety to the owner’s hand. Amenities fee: On the other hand RV companies may also charge you for amenities such as bedding, kitchenware, generators, propane, gas and more. Cancellation Fee: yes, there can be a cancellation fee. Most of the RV rental companies have some kind of cancellation fee where you have to give some fee on a cancellation or rescheduling a trip. Cleaning Fee: There is also a cleaning fee with some RV rentals. Further Reading: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RENT AN RV? (+ SAVING TIPS)
12. Insurance Is Important
Insurance is important for an RV rental in case of mishaps. Some companies provide insurance and they charge a fee for it. If they are not providing it then also you must do it on your own, as giving little today is better than giving a large sum of money later if anything goes wrong. You remain on the safer side with it. The best way to ensure your RV rental is through car insurance companies. While you get up to 1 million insurance by renting an RV from companies such as Outdoorsy.
13. Gas Mileage Is Not Good
Generally rented RVs have a poor track record of low gas mileage. During the summer season, it is worst with the high prices of fuel. It also varies depending upon the type of RV. The best is to ask the RV owner before leaving as it will give you the general idea of fuel consumption. It is also interesting to know that gas mileage depends upon the terrain, weather, load on the RV and speed. There are places where you can get gas at cheaper prices. Gas stations on busy highways are mostly expensive so plan you route accordingly or keep additional gas with you.

14. Use Good Apps
There are many apps especially for RVers so use them to get help, save time and be right. Apps such as: 1. Sanidumps: it helps you to find dump stations when your RVs black or grey tank is loaded. It is a free app. Google Play iTunes 2. GPS CoPilot: it is an offline map app that also offers other map features such as Navigon, Garmin do not provide. It is a free app, the paid version has more features. Google Play iTunes 3. Dish Align & Dish Aligner: this app is to get your TV signal from the satellite dish, it helps in alignment with your satellite dish antenna. It is a free app. Google Play iTunes 4. Gas Buddy: this is an app that can compare fuel prices to help you to find the cheapest place to refuel. It is free to download. Google Play 5. Yelp: already a popular app among the Rvers it has a giant database of campgrounds, services, entertainment venues, and restaurants. It is a good app too if you are navigating a new area. Free to download. Google Play
15. Pet policy
If you are planning to bring your pet in an RV then check the pet policy because some RV rental allows pets and others don’t. If they allow it then there can be an extra deposit or restriction on the total number of pets allowed. There are campgrounds and RV parks which do not allow pets so you have to check it too in order to make an arrangement for them.
16. Save Money By Bringing Food
Remember, much of the money is spend on food especially while you are on road. Everything is expensive so it is better to take a tour of a nearby food store before an actual tour. It will save a ton of money and will be healthy too (if you have packed those). The restaurant on the roadside are always expensive and even the food stores.
17. RV Driving Is Different
If you are new to RVs then it might take a while to adjust your hands on it. RVs are taller and heavier than cars and trucks. Travel trailers are different than Class A, B, and C because here you have to tow it with the help of a vehicle. There is a chance of fishtailing at high speed. There are other things such as turning and backing up. During steep turns drive slow as many accidents happen at these points. If backing up is a problem then take the help of a fellow camper or RV park staff. Do not hesitate just ask for help if you are not sure about it. Driving an RV does not require a special driver's license so your usual driver's license is enough. The only thing that you have to do is to drive it on an open road for some time. Drive slower than usual! Speeding up is not a point while on a trip because I read somewhere “it’s a vacation, not a race”
18. RV Hookups
RV hookups are confusing at first then its all about habit. Remember to take the help of the owner's manual that you have inside the cabinet or see some Youtube videos. If not sure then ask for help as it is better to call someone to get it to fix before mishap rather then to call someone after it. God is with you!
Video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBIWlgk2Yak
19. Secure Your Items
When RV is moving things inside it can jump from their places. Before you leave clean the counter and tables, close the cabinet doors, keep small loose things inside drawers and cabinet. It will prevent accidents and potential damage to things.
20. Know Basic Skills
RVing is not easy as it requires some basic skills to manage, repair or to start a thing. Things such as starting a generator, connecting the sewer hose to the dumping station, reading the control panel, the occasional job related to electricity, plumbing or mechanical stuff. These things require a person who knows something about other professions too. That is why go through some Youtube videos on RVing or read some books on RV before really starting it. Further Reading: MUST READ RV BOOKS
21. Questions That You Must Ask The RV Owner
The RV owner knows the RV better than you, they will try to sell their words, in between that keep asking some question which would be helpful later or spot on. The questions such as: 1.         What is the gas mileage? 2.         Is there a generator in it? 3.         Does it have a GPS? 4.         Is there bedding, pillows, kitchenware in it? 5.         Does it have an AC or Heaters?
22. Bring RV Essentials
Most of the time you will get kitchenware, paper towels, etc but you have to arrange for other useful things. Here is the list of essential things: 1. Towels 2. Bed linens 3. Pillows 4. Toiletries 5. Cleaning stuff such as sponges, dish towel, trash bags 6. Toilet paper 7. Broom 8. Dustpan 9. Clothing 10. First aid kit 11. Plates, cups, and bowls 12. Folding chair 13. Portable grill 14. Bicycles 15. Outdoor games 16. Flashlights 17. Folding table 18. Sunscreen 19. Insects and bugs repellent 20. Camera 21. Battery charger 22. Hiking Gear 23. What is an RV Generator?
An RV generator is an important piece of machine which runs your electrical appliances when your RV is not able to run them. It is essential when you do not have access to shore power. You can charge the RV house battery with it. You can also use it when you need a direct source of power for your 120V AC outlet. Other things which you can run on it are microwave oven, hairdryer, toaster, and others.
Types of RV generator
Before buying it is better to know about different types of a generator as it will help you to find the best-suited one for you. It is also good to select the RV generator which runs on the same fuel as your RV. Gasoline types Some of them can run your AC and some can run other appliances such as TV, microwave, etc. It all depends upon the watt. Higher the watt the higher number of items you can use. These types of the generator have a vent pipe and a muffler, the vent pipe can extend outside the RV. The gasoline type of generator requires more maintenance than a propane type, but the power output is more than the propane type. Propane types They are the top-performing RV generator because of low noise, fuel efficiency, and environmental friendliness. It has a longer shelf life but a limited runtime due to a small tank.
What To Look For When Buying An RV Generator
These are the points that you should consider before buying an RV generator. By knowing about the different features and models you will make a better judgment in selecting the best one for you. Power Output This is an important factor in deciding the best RV generator for your RV. The size is also vital as a very large generator will take more space, but at the same time, it should provide enough power to the RV. To find out the right power output you must calculate how much power do you need. There is a fridge, AC, microwave and other electrical appliances that consume more power. The best is to go through the manual of each appliance and add up the maximum watt consumption of each. This will give you an idea about the power needed in your RV. Always buy a generator that has a power output more than the required as you do not want to switch off one thing to start the other. If you need a generator with more power than it is best to invest in one large generator than investing in multiple generators. Portability This is the second important thing that you should keep in mind. Do you want a portable generator or a permanent one? Portable means you can take it anywhere with you and it will not be attached to your vehicle permanently. Most of the time people take it out and then connect it to the RV for power. The permanent generator will be attached to your rig and you cannot move it anywhere, easily. Most of the RVers choose a portable generator due to its versatility of using it anywhere. Nowadays people run two generators simultaneously for more power to run their AC, fridge and other items. A permanent generator is generally used in fifth wheels and Class A due to long term usage.                  Fuel Consumption You should consider the fuel consumption of a generator because later it will matter a lot. Know about the fuel efficiency, tank capacity and other things related to it. This becomes important when you are RVing in a remote area. Try to select a generator that is eco-friendly and consumes less fuel. Another aspect of generators is that open frame generators burn more fuel than the portable ones. This happens because open frame generators are mostly high power generators used for more power. If you do not need more power for your trailer then avoid bigger ones and invest in portable generators. Noise Level This is important for Rvers as the noise level of the generator means a lot. Most of the people consider it the most important point while buying a generator. There are some reasons why a noisy generator can be trouble for you. Your sleep can be disturbed, it can annoy your neighbors and most of the national and private campgrounds have limitations on noise. Most of the time the limit is 60 decibels at 50 feet distance.

If you do not own an RV that means you have to rent it and for that, you have to contact RV rental companies. But before renting, research is a must. Renting an RV is easy if you know about the RV rental companies and the process. I have compared the best RV rental companies based on features, reviews, and price. Let’s rent an RV!   Comparison of The Top RV Rental Companies There are many RV rental companies out there some with peer to peer models and some with a fleet of RVs. It can be pretty confusing as to how to find the best RV rental company that suits your needs. I have come with this article in which I have compared the best RV rental companies out there. Before beginning it is better to understand the different RV rental models. There are three types of RV rental companies: Peer to peer RV rental Corporate RV rental RV rental marketplace sites 1. Peer to peer RV rental platforms are where you rent an RV from an individual RV owner. The companies are like middlemen between you and the RV owner. You get an RV nearby and the RV owner gets the money. These companies take a percentage from the deal. 2. Corporate RV rental companies are the companies that have their fleet of RVs which they offer for rent through their RV rental outlets. 3. RV marketplace sites are companies that consolidate corporate rental companies into their platform, generally online.

What Things You Should Consider Before Selecting An RV Rental Company?
There are many things to see before you book an RV, such as: 1. How many people will travel with you? An RV allows you to take from kids to a grandparent with you on vacation. But, you should consider the space and sleeping space with different models. Most of the RV rental companies provide information as to how much space and sleeping beds are available in the RV. Other things which you must see is the bathroom size, dining table seats, etc. 2. Where are you traveling? This is important as some companies such as outdoorsy and RVshare have locations nearly everywhere but others do not. 3. How much distance you will cover? This is another thing which you must know before traveling as it can cost you less or more depending upon the distance covered. Some RV rentals charge for every mile and others comes with unlimited mileage.
What Is The Best RV Rental Company Of My Choice?
If you ask me, then the best RV rental companies are Outdoorsy and RVshare. The reason is simple as they are affordable, have lots of locations to choose from, a variety of RVs and good 24/7 customer support. These two companies have locations in many places which gives us the freedom to choose the desired location. It is especially good for people coming from small-town and rural areas. Both companies have an easy to use the website even for less techie one. All you have to do is to enter the desired date, location and you get a long list of RVs to choose from. All you need is an RV running in good condition and clean enough. Yes, if I live in a big city and want to go for a short trip with a few people then my choice would be Escape Campervans and Jucy. How To Update RV Interior Lightning
Tumblr media
Do you want to update the old RV interior lightning then you have landed in the right place? Changing Interior lighting the look, feel and mood, right. Then how can you change it and what are the options you have, get seated and read the article to know everything about RV Interior Lightning. Let’s illuminate! Disclaimer: I am not an electrician and whatever I have learned about electricity, light fixture, and in general, is either what I found online or through experience. So, please call an electrician if you are unsure about anything and be safe. *This post contains affiliate links to products.
Why you may want to upgrade the RV interior lights?
For me, there are two possible reasons for this. The old incandescent bulbs are boring and old fashion, they lack style. They use too much power as they are not from the new age, as LED bulbs which consume less electricity and give more light. Basically, for RVs, there are two kinds of lights available, 120 volts and 12 volts. For 120v one, you need a generator or shore power and is similar to the lights available at home. 12v can run on battery power.
Incandescent or LED lights
You should be the judge here because it's your RV, your taste and the need. I am here to give information on what option you might have, but still, both should be compared. LED wins! Do you know why? Less consumption of energy Bright non-tainted light A lot of options available You get many options with LED lights that are not available in the old bulb. Even you like the old light color that is also available with LEDs today. So, nothing should pull you towards the Incandescent bulbs, if you are really not fond of using them. Why LEDs are so efficient? LEDs are so efficient because they do not use direct heat to produce light as an incandescent bulb. The incandescent bulb gives a much wider spectrum of radiation because it heats the metal to light up. (tungsten filament is used in incandescent bulbs) With visible light incandescent bulb also gives UV light and infrared light, which causes it to consume more power than LED. LEDs only produce visible light that is a much narrow spectrum of radiation, needing less energy.

Stick & Tap Light
What is an LED light?
LED is an abbreviated name of Light Emitting Diode. They consume less electricity giving bright light. Earlier LED lights were expensive but now RVers are using it in their RV for lightning purposes.
Why Use LED lights?
RV users know how important is to save electricity for other uses. Where electricity rate varies so much across the country you want to save on it. LED lights consume less electricity and can illuminate without draining your battery too fast.
How much energy you will save?
Taking about energy saving, an incandescent bulb runs on 60 watts and for an average of 1000 hours, LED lights run on 12 watts and have a life expectancy of 25000 hours. You do the math! I personally like LEDs because they illuminate the RV better than the old one and saves a good amount of energy. Many RV also has fluorescent or halogen lights in their interior but the problem is they give tainted light. Tainted in the sense they offer near either yellow or green light. Talking about the light fixtures they often burn due to halogen and incandescent lights which becomes hot. LED is the future!

So, You Must Buy Or DIY
I will recommend buying a light fixture because it is not easy to craft something with that finishing unless you have good knowledge about it. You have great options available at the online store so it's not worthy of it if you have less time. But, if you like to make then do not hesitate to show your skills, perfection comes with experience that what I know. Look around yourself there are plenty of things which can be used for it things like empty jars, decorative objects, bowls, and even dishes. The decision is up to you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRT3Y4Mpnj0   What To Do? RVs do not have 1 or 2 lights, there can be 10 to 15 or more light fixtures in your RV. So, I will not be practical to replace all of them especially when their price could be anything from $50 to 300 each. If you are out of budget then you could buy half and DIY half yourself. In this way, you have to spend less or you can buy a set of 5 LEDs for dome light from here.

What Type Of Light Fixtures Do You Have?
Before renovating you must know what type of light fixture you have in your RV. Commonly, there are three types of light fixtures. Battery operated lights that you have to operate at the fixture. Hardwired overhead light fixtures which can be switched on or off at the switch plate on the wall. Then you may have standard RV dome lights that are wired into the RV power system but have to be operated at the fixture itself. If you determined the energy source of the lighting it will become easy for you to plan according to your will. Another thing you should consider to use any light fixture that can be used at home. Yes, you do not have to buy only RV light fixtures, especially if you have a generator. There are so many options out there pendants, sconces, flush mounts and chandeliers. You can use an LED light dimmer Switch like this one, that waterproof, aluminum finish, and built-in resistant.   What Challenges You Might Face? Replacing RV lighting has its challenges and knowing them before moving is better. So, here I have addressed some of them which might come in your way. The horizontal and vertical space around the light fixture may vary or limited according to the RV make. You have to make sure your lights are not on the heads or doors way. You have to measure before you consider buying anything. All the light fixtures may not be hardwired, the electrical lines must be connected to a switch or power source. It will all depend upon the make, some lights may be battery operated fixture that can be on the wall and others may be hardwired to a switch. You may not get many options when you search to buy RV Light fixtures.
Important Things You Should Know
While you may select any light fixture but you have to know something before you bring anything. Limitations like volt, watt, bulb size, quality, and color may come in your way. So, be right to choose the right one. Volts: you have to select the right volt bulb for your fixtures. The light bulb needs to be of the same power as the power source that will depend upon the RV. Most of the RVs have a 12 volt DC system. Check it in the owner’s manual. Watts: A light bulb and a fridge consumption of watts are different. Where light bulb runs on lesser watt a fridge runs on higher watts so, be careful. This is especially important if you are on generator power. Size: right size matters especially with bulb otherwise it will not fit with the fixture. Color: it depends upon the taste and interior of your RV. There are different options available depending on what you select a cool or warm color. Cool light is generally the brightest and appears to be white. The warm light generally offers a gentle blush due to the traditional interior color. Quality: quality of anything matters, generally you should avoid to bring in anything which is of bad quality. Buy once and for all! You must take care to see the review of the product and never buy it in bulk. First, ensure the thing which you are going to buy is of good quality or not.

Hack For Updating RV Lightning
If you want a light fixture that isn’t hardwired with an electrical source then use this trick. You have to buy a battery-operated LED puck light like this one and keep it inside the fixture. You can operate it with either by remote or pushing the light. The good thing is that you can even time it. You can even pit the LED puck light inside the beam,  into sconces and hang it anywhere on the wall, inside cupboards or mounted under kitchen cabinets. You can also use a bigger flush mount light fixtures for a slide-out area or for bedroom.
How Can You Move In RV With Chandeliers And Pendants?
If you move with a chandelier or pendants chances are that it will move and possibly can do some interior damage or injury to a person. So what to do? A simple solution will be to tie them before you move. This will make sure it stays in its position in the entire trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you put LED bulbs into halogen fittings? Generally, LED lights are not compatible with halogen fittings, I have pointed out some problems that can occur when LED lights are tried to install in halogen fitting. Always call an electrician for any electrical job if you are not an expert. If you can take preventive measures you will not have any problem. Transformer issues: halogen transformers provide more power than what LED downlights needs. If you replace the transformer with an LED driver it will regulate the voltage. If you will not replace the transformer then it will transfer excess power to the LED. You will need to change the transformer or not you can tell it by checking that halogen have pins or pegs to connect them to the circuit. A transformer is needed for pins, peg doesn’t need them. Lower Light Output: high voltage halogen transformer can damage the LED and can also lead to lower light output. The LED needs less power than halogen that’s why they draw minimum power from the transformer, this results in dim or no light. Dimming, Buzzing or Flickering Lights: these problems arise when LED downlights are used without LED drivers. LED needs DC power and if you use them in an AC circuit it will lead to voltage fluctuations, that result in flickering, buzzing or dimming. Short lifespan: LED needs constant DC current supply for maintaining efficiency. Fluctuations that comes from the AC outlet shorten its lifespan. Voiding Warranties: if you use LED in fitting that is incompatible then it can void warranties.   How do you change a dome light? You need minimum tools to replace dome light, here goes the process: Switch off the dome light. You can check the owner’s manual for that. Then you have to remove the bulb lens cover, there are mostly two screws that hold the lens. If there are no screws then you have to pry the lens with a flat head screwdriver. Place the screwdriver opposite to the light switch and press in, the lens will pop out. Now unscrew the bulb from the dome socket, and screw a new bulb. Replace the dome cover.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8l91gu6ZTI   How do you test a 12 volt LED? You can test a 12 volt LED in two ways. First, by a multimeter and second, by a coin cell battery. By testing it by multimeter gives you a clear reading as to how strong each LED bulb is. The brightness of the LED tells you about the quality. If you don’t have a multimeter then you can also test it with a coin cell battery. I have gone through both methods. Testing with a multimeter for this, you have to purchase a multimeter that can take diode readings. Generally, a multimeter can check volt, amps, and ohms. You need a multimeter that can test diodes also. Remember to buy a digital one as an analog model are harder to read and is less accurate. Now hook the red and black test leads into the multimeter. The red is for the positive charge and the black is for a negative charge. After that, you have to turn the dial on the front side of the multimeter clockwise away from the off position. Now connect the black lead to the cathode side of the LED and red probe to the anode side of the LED. Always connect the black probe before the red probe as doing it reverse may not show accurate reading. if the LED is not damaged then you should see the reading on the display. When you see no reading on the display then try once by starting it again. If you have performed the test right and there is no reading then the LED might be damaged. A good quality LED will give bright light and a bad one will be dim. Testing with a coin cell battery      Using a coin cell battery is best as it will not pass enough current to damage it. You have to buy a coin cell battery that is made to hold the type of coin cell battery like CR2025. Now connect the black lead to the cathode and red one to the anode. If the connection is right then the LED will glow if not try again. If it does not glows then the LED might be damaged.
Tumblr media
Flush Mount Light Can you use LED lights in any fixture? Yes, you can use LED lights in any fixture, as long as the LED bulb uses less wattage than the fixture. If the LED bulb label says "100 watts LED equivalent" that does not mean that the bulb runs on 100 watts. It means that the LED bulb produces light that is equivalent to a 100-watt incandescent bulb. If it is written on the socket not to exceed "60 watts" then it means the danger of high heat that is produced by an incandescent bulb. So, if the fixture says not to exceed 60 watts then also you can use a 100-watt equivalent LED bulb. Light is measured in a lumen, not watts, so an 800 lumen LED bulb gives the same amount of light what a 60-watt incandescent bulb produces. So, you can use 100W, 125W and 150W LED equivalent in a 60-watt fixture because all of them will consume only 60 watts. A 150W LED equivalent will produce 2600 lumen using only 30 watts. That is 2.5 times more than an incandescent bulb in the same 60-watt fixture.   Which is a brighter halogen or LED? LED bulbs are much brighter than halogen or incandescent bulbs of the same watt.
Conclusion
That was all the information that I have for updating RV interior lighting. If you have not changed the old lightning and you are facing problems with energy-saving then you might consider doing the same.   If You Think Your Friends/Network Would Find This Useful, Please Share It With Them Or You Can Give Us 5 Stars Down Below – We’d Really Appreciate It- Thanks!  Read the full article

A Guide To Living In Your RV During The Winter
Tumblr media
If you do not travel in your RV in winter then you miss the adventure and the scenic beauty of winter. Yes, things absolutely change during winter the scene, clothes and even the way of living. If you like to travel in the RV in the cold then you have to get ready for it before you ride your RV. Lower temperature makes life uneasy so let’s prepare for it. Use these tips to live comfortably in your RV during cold winter and enjoy your RVing.
1. Insulate The Windows And The Floor
Windows can be a place for heat loss during cold especially if you have a single-pane window. You can cover the windows with a bubble wrap, foam insulator or even plastic wrap will do the job. Just remember the plastic wrap should be thick enough to trap the heat. If there is sun outside try them do not block the sunlight let it come inside, in this way you will get natural light and extra heat. Keep in mind to cover the window, before the sun goes down. To make things better you can also use heavy thermal curtains to cover the windows, this will maintain a high temperature inside. One downside of covering the windows is blocking the beautiful view but it’s important to keep yourself warm too. Here I have found a window insulator kit that you can use. For the floor you can add rugs or thermal curtains, it will not let heat escape outside. It will also be comfortable to walk on it if you do not have carpet on the floor. Remember there is cold air blowing underneath your floor so you have to take steps to keep the heat inside.
2. Use Dehumidifier
Humidity acts like an enemy for RV, this is one of the problems that come with perfect insulation. The mold and moisture start damaging the interior stuff. If there are few people inside the RV there will be humidity. Vents are vital for dehumidification but during cold weather, you can’t dare to keep open it. The heat will escape from it. So, what to do? The best solution is a dehumidifier that does the work without disturbing your comfort. It lowers the humidity level within the RV which keeps inside dry and mold-free. Buy a dehumidifier like this one which automatically shuts down when the water tank is full.
3. Use Smaller RV
Small is better in winter, why? Because smaller spaces tend to get warmer quickly and also consume less energy. If you are not camping with lots of people prefer to choose a smaller RV, believe me, it will be helpful. if you already have your own camper then you can't do enough but if you rent an RV then select a smaller one if possible. For me, it is better to sacrifice a bit of space for warmth during winter. A smaller RV will use less electricity or propane which will also save extra money.
4. Eat Hot Food
Yes, eating hot food will keep you warm during the cold. Don’t believe me, try once at least. When you eat cold food it brings down your body temperature because body heat is used up to heat up the food. So, when you eat hot food your body will not have to work so hard on it. Also, try to eat food which keeps your body warm, food like nuts, eggs, meat, chocolate and all seasonal food that grows in winter are good to eat. Nature knows which food should be good for you. Whenever you cook it heats up the RV so cook often as cooking during traveling makes enjoyment double, especially with good hot food.
5. Use A Thermal Sleeping Bag
Commonly, sleeping bags are used inside a tent or under the sky but you can use it inside RVs too. The benefit of sleeping in a sleeping bag is that it will keep your body temperature higher. An added benefit is that you do not have to keep the heater on, it will save electricity or propane for other use. It will also save you money. Remember, to choose a sleeping bag which has a lower temperature rating than the place of visit. So, if you are going to visit a place where the weather will be 30 degrees Fahrenheit then select a bag that can tolerate 20 degrees Fahrenheit. If you feel too warm then you can sleep with fewer clothes on or simply vent the bag. Always choose a sleeping bag with a hood as it will cover your head from where a large amount of heat escapes out like this portable sleeping bag that you can carry anywhere.
6. Reduce Heat Loss
There are many ways by which you can reduce the amount of heat that is lost due to bad insulation. Let’s discuss them one by one. 1. Skirting The first thing that you can do is use an RV skirt if you want to stay warm. This thing is enough to fight most of the problem that comes along with freezing temperatures. If you are asking what is an RV skirt? Then the answer is RV skirt is a fabric usually made of insulating material to keep RV warm in winters. It helps to keep the cold away from entering the RV. Vinyl skirting is best in reducing internal heat loss and keeping the warmth inside. It protects the RV during strong winds, keeping the RV stable. They also help to keep the pipes and tanks from freezing. RV skirts are made of a variety of materials keeping in mind the different weather conditions. In order to use fit them to your RV, you have to use a Velcro or zipper splice. It becomes very easy to remove and attach the skirt with them. You can also add vinyl cement in order to attach the skirt securely to the RV. It will ensure that it remains on the RV even in strong winds. You can get an RV skirt from this company. 2. Closet The walls of the closet are generally poorly insulated than the rest of the RV. It makes the environment inside the RV very cold. You can use a moisture-resistant adhesive foam panel product like this one to prevent heat escaping. It also looks good and increases the beauty of the interior. 3. Slides Out Even if you attach a skirt around your RV then also the floors of the slides will remain cold. If you measure the floor temperature with a thermometer you will find a good difference between floor and room temperature. So, in order to fix that you may use a foam board and fix it with duct tape or glue from outside of each slide. It will make a huge difference in temperature and now heat will not escape from the floor of the slides out. You can use HVAC tape as it performs better in all weather conditions and does not leave a mark on removal like this one here. Further Reading: 9 Proper Ways To Insulate Your Trailer
7. Electric Propane Tank Blanket
One issue with propane tanks is that it freezes in low temperature that makes it difficult to use. if you use propane for energy then you may know about it. You can use an electric propane tank blanket which keeps the propane tank from freezing like the one here with a good rating.
8. Stay Physically Active
Body temperature tends to decrease when physical activity is less especially during cold weather. So, it is not in your favor to sit inside a blanket, after all, you are RVing to enjoy. Its time for some physical activity or games which engage your body and mind. Do, you know? That after some physical work our body feels less cold for a good amount of time after that. You don’t agree then do some jumping jacks for 5 minutes, you will definitely put off the jacket for sure! It time to play some games like badminton, catch and others, switch on your child mode and move your body.
9. Work On Your Plumbing
Excessive cold is not good for the plumbing as you may know that it can rapture your pipes and tanks. In the middle of your trip, you do not want a plumbing failure and all that trouble. These tips will not actually help to warm your RV but it is a part of the whole thing so I thought to bring this up. Here are some tips that will help you. You should bring bottled water for daily use and keep the freshwater tank empty if you do not have anything to stop it from freezing. When you keep your freshwater tank empty then you prevent any risk of damage caused by freezing water. You should use antifreeze for the black and grey tank and also pour it down the drain and flush down the toilet to eliminate any risk of freezing. If you are using water hookups or city water supply then remember to insulate the pipes. To protect the water line from freezing you can use this product Pirit Brand Heated Hose.  You can also wrap your regular hose with Heat Cable and pipe insulation. Do not let your black tank to freeze to avoid the mess. To protect the tank from freezing you can use tank heaters like this one if you are going to a place where the temperature drops to freezing point.
10. Always Have One Smaller Propane Tank
This tip has nothing to do with warming up the RV directly but will help you in saving a lot of time. Most of the RVs have a large built-in propane tank for heating and cooking use but the problem with them is that you have to drive the RV to the filling station and they are not nearby, always. Smaller propane tanks can be used as a reserve and at the time you do not have to rush to the filling station. if you use a smaller propane tank often then you will be in a habit of saving gas because of its availability.
11. Portable Space Heaters
Portable space heaters are better because they do not drain the battery too fast and they are only 250 watts. Get for yourself from here. You can use them inside for heating purposes or if anytime temperature falls you can use them to prevent tanks from freezing. If you are on propane only then it will cost a lot, by using electrical heaters you will save money and time. If you have an RV skirt on, then place the heater under the RV it will do its job and prevent tanks from freezing in an enclosed space. Always use safety measures before working with electrical appliances.
12. Invest In Solar Panel
If you have a space heater then a solar panel like this one is must as the sun is everywhere to charge it. Even the densest fog cannot stop UV rays from the sun. You won’t have to burn propane or diesel to run the generators. By using solar panels you will be able to run the space heater and keep the environment warm. If you mostly camp at campsites where you have access to electricity then you probably don’t need solar power. But, if you travel a lot in the wild or away from urban facilities then it will be an important investment. Always, do research before buying a solar panel as to how much power you need. Depending upon your needs you should bring a good one. There are two types of solar panel available: Polycrystalline: 13 to 16% efficiency that is less expensive. Monocrystalline: 15 to 20% efficiency that is more expensive. The power output of both the solar panels will remain the same, efficiency only means that the monocrystalline one can charge the battery faster than the polycrystalline one. Your electric appliances will never know the difference! Monocrystalline solar panels are available in flexible form and panels are more aerodynamic than the raised ones.
13. Maintenance Of RV Is Important
Cold weather means rough weather, you cannot take chances with it. During summers you can sleep through the night without AC but believe me there is no chance of surviving in winters. Your RV health should be perfect to fight off the cold or you can land in trouble. It is better to check the RV, do its maintenance before you start your trip. While driving the battery gets charged but in cold weather, it won't last long so you have to be ready. Many RV shops offer full winterizing services that your vehicle(home) needs. Keep your RV in the best condition possible.
14. Cold Weather RV Features
If you have all-weather RV then you may never want a tip on how to get ready for winters. Your RV should have a feature that is discussed below to withstand cold weather. Extra insulation on the walls and doors. An enclosed underbelly for maximum protection. Heat ducts and vents in the storage bay area, where most of the plumbing is located. A water connection point with heater vent blowing into the enclosure. There should be vents on the roof to get rid of the humidity. Double pane window for better insulation. If you have already purchased an RV then try to make it wintertime feature-rich and if you are planning to get an RV then get a four-season RV to avoid discomfort. Other tips for winterizing the RV are: You can use spray foam at the bottom of the camper but make sure to leave the place where you might need any repair. It will provide insulation and keep the heat trap inside the camper. Try to put reflectix on the backside of a storage bay access door.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is it possible to live in an RV in the winter? Yes, it is possible to live in your RV in the winter if you do take precautions and get ready with your RV for winters. There are many people who live in their RV full time as we live in our house. Generally, RVs are designed and have thin walls and less insulation that is not good to withstand cold. You have to upgrade the RV first so that it can provide you an excellent shelter in winter. The rest of the knowledge always comes with experience, as you will live in it you will come to know how you can live in it better. Some tips that will help you with that are: Insulate windows, door, floor, and vents. Use space heaters Good antifreeze or tank heaters are good for black, grey and freshwater tanks. Use an electric blanket or sleeping bags for added precaution. Insulate your plumbing.   2. What is the best camper for cold weather? If you like to travel in winter and want to know the best campers for cold weather then here is the list of 10. Keystone Montana Northwood arctic fox Heartland bighorn Keystone raptor Heartland LM Arlington Jayco 327CKTS Eagle Lance 4 Seasons Travel Trailer Jayco Redhawk 26XD Windjammer 3008W Travel Trailer Forest River Arctic Wolf   3. Can you legally live in a camper? The answer is both yes and no, as there is no direct answer and every country and state has its own laws. If you are planning to live in your RV full time even if it is standing on your own land then also you may be breaking some laws and there are laws that may prohibit you from living in it. In rural areas laws are not so strict as in urban places, so, you have to ask it with your local authority before falling in trouble.   4. How do you flush antifreeze out of the camper? The best way to flush the RV antifreeze out of the camper is through running freshwater via the water system. You can do it either from the city water inlet or from the freshwater holding tank by using a water pump. You have to keep open all the faucets whether it is hot or cold and run fresh water through the system till it becomes clear. All the RV antifreeze will move into the holding tank that you can empty at a dump station. If you have added antifreeze to the freshwater tank then you need to drain it before filling it with fresh water. Most of the antifreeze is biodegradable and safe to the environment but still, you should check the label.   5. Is RV antifreeze toxic? Yes, most of the RV antifreeze is non-toxic but still, you should check the label for more detail. There are basically two types of antifreeze either it is ethanol or propylene glycol. Antifreeze work by raising the freezing point of water.   6. How to insulate RV underbelly? It is always better to insulate the RV underbelly because it traps the heat inside the camper. Here is step by step instructions as to how to insulate RV underbelly. Step 1. First, take measurements of the RVs underbelly. Step 2. Detach the underbelly. Step 3. Install the new insulation material. Step 4. Put everything that was removed from the underbelly. Insulation material that you can use for insulation is rigid foam such as ISO, EPS, and XPS. 9 Proper Ways To Insulate Your Trailer
Tumblr media
If you are looking to insulate your trailer then you are in the right place. Proper insulation can keep the trailer cool during the warm days and warm during cold days. Insulating your trailer is justified as they do not have facilities as motorhomes which makes them prone to cold or heat. In both cases, you want to insulate the trailer so that you can spend a comfortable day or night inside it. So, let’s see what are the 9 ways by which you can insulate your trailer.
1. Repair Any Damage
This is the first thing which you have to do before anything else. The reason is that small cracks and holes should be repaired for full and proper insulation. So, without neglecting start inspecting your trailer very carefully, look for any damage and make a list so that you do not miss any spot. Skipping this step will not save you during cold winter months and believe me during a cold night even a small hole becomes a cold wind blowing monster. So, if there is a crack in the roof or a hole in the floor its time to fill it up.
2. Cover The Vents
Vents can be easily missed out because they remain higher up in the vehicle. For proper insulation, you have to cover them up. Trailer vents are important as though them humidity and moisture escapes and prevent uncomfortable fogginess and build-up of mold and mildew inside the trailer. On hot days they are perfect solutions for a comfortable interior environment but during cold weather they can shake teeth, so to avoid this you can use vent cushion. This one from Camco is the best, you get both option reflective and non-reflective. There are two types of vent cushions reflective and non-reflective first, a non-reflective cushion which can be a little expensive and the second, reflective vent cushion which even offers UV protection. You can easily place these cushions on the vents whenever you want or when it's needed.
3. Skirting The Trailer
Are you probably asking what is skirting? It is a layer of fabric that is wrapped around the bottom half of your vehicle that dangles the surface. This skirting prevents excess cold and heat coming from underneath the trailer. Skirting is a popular choice for RVs than trailer but it is no exception. You can also try skirting your trailer. RVSkirting.com is a specialist in designing RV skirts. If you have a fifth wheel then you can get a one for you. Otherwise, you may have to resize or trim it after buying for a good fit. A skirt can control the interior temperature very well, this also saves your fuel as you do not have to use it as much as previously you have to keep the vehicle warm.
4. Insulate The Walls
If you really want to control the temperature of the interior then you have to reinsulate the walls of your trailer. The reason for this is simply the walls of most of the trailers are insulated by thin, flimsy fiberglass. This is no good, for those cold days. For complete insulation, this is an important task which you have to accomplish. One thing more, you should check the warranty guidelines of your vehicle and also try to call a professional for this job as this is tricky. After sorting out the job you are ready to choose from a wide range of insulating materials. They are: 1. Rigid Foam This type of insulating material comes with good R-value. This can be easily cut and sized by slicing it. To fix this on your trailer wall you may need chalk or tape. Some properties of rigid foam are durability, strength and moisture resistance. 2. Spray Foam If you are doing the job on your own then spray foam is good. It has good R-value and comes in a handy container. These spray foam looks like the shaving cream when it comes out of the container. Apply it on the wall and you a ready. 3. Fiberglass Foam If you do not want to replace the insulation then you can add more with fiberglass. It comes with a reasonable R-value and can keep the cool air inside the vehicle in summers. But you have to be careful with it as you may have to remove it every few years because fiberglass expands with heat. Another problem is the mold that can grow on it.
5. Take Care Of Windows
There is mostly one single pane window in a trailer, which is not enough for insulation. Windows are thin and cheap which does not stop cold or warm air to do its job. So, you are left with two options either change the window or insulate it further. Changing the window has some problems such as voiding the warranty and it is expensive too. So, it's better to insulate it even if it's not so better as changing it but still, it will make a change. I have tried to cover both options it's up to you which one you choose. 1. Insulating The Windows If you do not want to spend on a new window or do not want to void the warranty then try this. Plastic Insulating Film- plastic insulating film does not cost much. You have to cover the window from both sides and use double-sided adhesive tape to keep the film in the right place. Now, take a blow dryer and use it to make airtight seal across the film. Bubble Wrap- OK, I admit it will not look good but if you want to insulate the window then you have to do it. Spray some water on the window and cover the window with a bubble wrap and then use tape to fix it. 2. Replacing The Windows First, you have to choose which kind of window you want in your trailer and you have a wide range to choose from. Awning Windows: it a great choice for a mid-size trailer as they have dual opening glass panes. Horizontal Sliders: they open and close sideways. Vertical Sliders: they are tall and also open through a slide on tracks. Jalousie Windows: they generally do not have a good sealing but looks great. Step 1: first measure the size of the window. It can happen that you may not find the right window size in your hardware store, so you have to give the measurement and get one accordingly. Step 2: now try to open the old window, sometimes it is all about opening some screws. If you have a metal or vinyl siding then take them off first. Step 3: there can be some chalk or putty on the sides which you have to scrape it away for a perfect fit. Step 4: fit the window in the right place a seal it with some sealant. Use new screws if the old ones are in bad shape. 3. Blackout Curtains Other possible ways to insulate your trailer windows are blackout curtains. They can be useful in insulating the trailer both in heat and cold. Buy blackout curtain and cut them to fit your trailer windows. You can also use window shields, like this one from Camco, they can protect you from the sun and also keep the trailer warm in winters.
6. Do Not Forget The Doors
Your effort of insulating the trailer largely depends on the door because a poorly sealed door is of no use. It is the next thing after the window which you should take care of. Like the wall, most of the trailer doors are not insulated well. The first thing you have to look at is the weatherstripping. You can get it on any home improvement shop or you can also order online. Weatherstripping is a bulky fabric that sticks beneath the door to prevent air entry. You can also add some extra sealing to improve the insulation. For this, you have to seal the area which is near your door frame inside by using a foam insulation tape, like this one. Carefully look at the door and find possible cracks or holes from which air can escape. Use chalk to fill those unwanted things. Lastly, DIY door insulators are great as you can make them at home and use them whenever you need them. Cut an insulation sheet of your choice and fit it over your door. You can use them when you need them, and when not in use keep it safely somewhere. Always cut the insulation sheet a bit larger than the actual door size as it will also cover the taps.
7. Trailer Underbelly
If you have already insulated the floor still you may need to do something for the trailer underbelly. During harsh weather, proper insulation will protect you from the cold and heat. You can insulate the underbelly by skirting as this is the cheapest and best method.  You can get a custom made skirt for your trailer from this company.
8. Plumbing
In winter you do not want frozen pipes or black waste tanks. It can be a real mess if pipe freezes. Insulating your trailer underbelly will not solve the problem as you have to insulate all exposed pipes and tanks. For the pipes, you can tape the insulation around the pipes which solves the problem. And for the tanks, you have to buy heating pads or use antifreeze. With this, you also want to insulate the hose. Another option is to buy hose which can withstand freezing temperatures such as this product from Camco.
9. Prevent Humidity
Proper insulation means blocking outside and inside air. If you have done a good job then a problem may arise due to very good insulation that is humidity. This is worst in winter than is summers because in summers you may use vents or open the windows, but during winter you will close even the smallest hole. If there are some people in a closed insulated trailer, inside it can quickly become humid. Moisture and humidity makes lots of damage including the uncomfortable interior environment. For this, you can use a dehumidifier, especially which can automatically shut down when the environment is perfect or not humid. You can try this one which should comfortably fit inside your trailer. You can also open the vent or window to get relief from it but dehumidifier is the best solution overall. The wall, windows, door, floor, and vents are the main place where you should focus on.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the best insulation for an RV? There are generally three types of insulation for RV or trailers. The best insulation will depend upon your needs and climate. Let look at the three types of insulation. Fiberglass Insulation Pros: fiberglass insulation is cheap, easy to install or replace and come with high R-value. Cons: whereas it also has some cons such as it can be damaged by moisture and can wear down over time. Best Suited for: single climate RV, trailer users. You should avoid using fiberglass insulation if you travel in different climates or spend more time in a place that has high humid conditions. Spray Foam insulation Pros: it is lightweight, not so expensive and resistant to moisture. Cons: it has low R-value and according to some people difficult to install, so you may have to call a professional. Best Suited For: it is best for people who stay in one type of climate. Another thing you should remember is that avoid using it if you spend a lot of time in extreme cold and hot weather.     3. Rigid Foam Insulation Pros: it has a long life and is also moisture resistant. Cons: it has a medium to low R-value and is also difficult to install. Best suited for: it can be used by RVers who travel in different climates often. It is difficult to find a trailer or RV with this insulation so you may have to install it on your own or by professional.    2. What is R-Value for Insulation? R-Value is used for building and construction where R-value denotes the measurement of how well a two-dimensional barrier like insulation material can resist the conductive flow of heat. The higher the value means better the insulator.
Conclusion
Yes, it is true that trailers have fewer features than a motorhome but that should not stop you to make it comfortable. There are many ways by which you can make it a perfect traveling home for yourself. It only needs some adjustments so you can insulate your trailer properly. Yes, trailers are not considered good for winters, but with proper insulation, you can spend a good time in your trailer. RV Financing | RV Loans: The Informative Guide
Tumblr media
Are you looking for RV loans or want to finance an RV, then you should read this article. Once you have decided to buy an RV remember it can be the second most expensive purchase after your home. So, think and research, as you have to find a creditor, know the interest rates, some tricks which will help you to save money and others. Don't panic as we have compiled everything you must know about RV loans|RV finance.
Where to Finance Your RV Or How to Finance an RV
RVs are expensive and for that many people opt for financing an RV. However, people can confuse a little bit because RV is not a house and not a vehicle but don’t worry there are ways to finance your RV. So, let’s know them one by one. 1. Dealership Loan Yes, like a car dealership offers loans in the same way you can get financing options from RV dealerships. Most of the loans that dealership provides are actually bank loans which are linked through the dealer. Dealers take and forward your information to these banks and the rest work is done by the banks itself. One thing to remember is that these dealers can add to the interest rates to get a profit from both selling an RV as well as from the financing of the deal. Like for example, the dealer may get a 5% interest rate from the bank but may charge you a 6% interest rate. So, if someone finances the RV straight from the bank then they might have to pay less. But there are dealers that claim that they can provide you better interest rate because of the relationship with the bank. You can go for this option as financing through a dealer might make the process faster and it also reduces the number of people you might have to deal directly. 2. Bank loan You can finance an RV directly from the bank if you are not interested in dealership loans. For this, you have to research which bank is offering a lucrative interest rate and directly contact them. There are also pre-approval for a loan so you can straight go to the dealership for the RV. Seeking loans from the banks have their own benefits such as there are no middlemen in the deal and you can also negotiate your own interest rate with the bank. This also means that you know how much money you have before selecting an RV. 3. Personal Loan Banks can also offer personal loans, so, if you don’t want to secure an RV loan with the actual RV then you can try this option. Banks will offer these unsecured loans to you if you have a great credit or if you are willing to pay higher interest rates. It all depends upon the situation you are in. like for example if you want to purchase a used RV then you might not get normal traditional bank loans, for this, you can go for a personal loan. 4. Home Equity Loans If you have a house then also you can finance a loan for your RV. In-home equity loans, you can use the value of your house as collateral on your loan.   This loan has its own downside as for example if you fail to make the payment you can lose your house. 5. Credit Cards You can use your credit card for RV purchase. But you have to see the limit of it. Most of the time, you can purchase a small RV from your credit card. The only thing you have to do is to use the credit card at the dealership. This type of deal has it benefit such as for your first year, the credit card company may offer you 0% financing. And, the downside is that it is expensive if they do not offer any discount. The number can go from 10% or even 20% after the first year. Ask your credit card company before making a purchase. 6. Online Lenders Yes, you can grab a loan from online lenders too, companies such as LightStream offers unsecured personal loans. These types of loans are generally unsecured and also quick to fund (usually in one day). Another company is Marcus that provides personal loans, including RVs. 7. Credit Unions Credit unions are non-profit organizations serving members who are working or associated with a particular group. They can offer lower rates with good or bad credit. Some credit unions are First Tech Federal Credit Union, Canopy Credit Union, and Navy Federal Credit Union.
How to Save Money On Financing An RV
It does not matter from where you took the loan and up to what amount for the RV. Here are a few things to remember to save money while financing your RV 1. Bigger Down Payment One of the first and excellent ways to save money while financing an RV is to reduce the amount of money you borrow. So, to reduce it put a large downpayment when you buy it. Saving money before buying an RV and negotiating for a better deal from the dealership can make it easy. An example will clear it out- If you purchase an RV for $20,000 for 15 years at a 5% interest rate, you have to pay $8,468.57 interest on the loan. If you put $1,000 extra downpayment you will be saving a lot of money. Now you purchase an RV for $19,000 for 15 years at a 5% interest rate, this time you have to pay $8,045.14 interest on a loan. You will save $423.43 just by putting $1,000 as a downpayment. 2. Go For a Lower Interest Rate Getting a loan for a lower interest rate will matter a lot in saving additional money. Example- How much you save by even 1% less interest rate. If you purchase an RV for $200,000 loan for 15 years at a 6% interest rate then you have to pay $103,788.46 in interest on a loan. Now you negotiated with the bank for a 5% interest rate. This time you purchased the same RV for the same $200,000 loan for 15 years at a 5% interest rate. Then you have to pay $84,685.71 interest on a loan. You will save $19,102.75 just by negotiating for a lower interest rate. 3. Writing the Interest Off on The Taxes For this, you have to show that you live full time in your RV or you use your RV as a secondary residence. So, if you want this you need an RV that includes cooking, sleeping and toilet facilities. For more information on this, see IRS publication 936 (US citizens only). You can also write off the RV interest if you use the RV for business purposes only. Then you won’t be able to use the RV for your personal use. 4. Refinancing Yes, you can refinance the same RV if you want. This is usually done when the interest rates are down or you have paid a substantial amount of principal of the loan. You may have to pay for the new originating fee for that. But, still, you will save a lot of money. This time the interest rates will be lower and you will be paying a lesser amount on a monthly bases. 5. Large Monthly Payment Making a large number of monthly payments can even save a lot of money in the long run. But, make sure to get a loan without pre-payment penalties. There are two benefits- it will reduce the amount of principal that has the interest attached to it. It will also reduce the length of time to pay off the loan. Example- If you finance an RV for $100,000 for 15 years at a 5% interest rate, then you have to pay an additional $41,926 in interest after your first payment. So, if you pay just $50 a month after the first payment you will end up paying only $38,008 in interest. That’s a saving of $3,919 and you will pay the loan 1.3 years sooner. 6. Shorter Loan The last way of saving on an RV loan is the shorter loan. Example- If you take a loan of $200,000 at 5% interest over 10 years, you have to pay total interest of 54,557. Now, if you take a $200,000 loan at 5% interest over 15 years, you have to pay total interest of $84,685. The difference is about $30,128, for this, you have to either start saving for an RV or to borrow from your family and friends. But this is a good way to really save a good amount of money.
Best RV Finance Company
Here are the best RV financing providers. 1. Lightstream Lightstream is one of the best providers of loans for RV, they offer higher borrowing amounts and lowest rates. You can apply for the loan from their website. Select the loan purpose, view the range of potential rates and you are set with a few other steps. In order to qualify for a lightstream loan, you must have a good to excellent credit history and many years of credit history and even a strong record of on-time payments. 2. Good Sam RV Loans Good Sam Finance Center offers a competitive RV loan rate for new and used RV purchases. They even provide loans for private party RV purchases and RV refinancing for existing RV loans. To apply for a loan you can mail, fax or call them. You can go to their website to apply for loan.
Tips For Financing Your RV
There are many things to consider before financing an RV, things like monthly installments, maintenance costs, and other expenses. Here are the things which you should know before financing your RV. 1. Do not take the price at face value Like many other things in the market, RVs are also inflated in price as much as 25% to 30%. Dealers will expect that you should buy the RV in the highest possible rates, but you should negotiate to bring the price down. You could save thousands of dollars by just asking “what the lowest you can offer” and that’s it. Sites like RVs.com, TVT.com, and RVTrader.com can give you a better idea of the price. So, it better you research and then visit your nearest RV dealership. 2. Do not overestimate Many people think that they have to spend only upon loans, taxes and registration fees for an RV, whereas there are other costs to consider, That includes: Utility costs such as water, cable, and electricity Campsite fee Storage fee Maintenance cost Mileage rates It is better to check the monthly interest rates before you finance an RV. it will give a better estimate before you step forward. You can use online calculators for that. RV Loan Calculator  3. Do not grab the first available loan Have you ever accepted the first loan you got, NO, never because you always look for other options? This thing is also true for RV loans. They are high chances that other offers can be better than the present one. RV loans are not always the same as auto loans in size and duration. See offers, be sure and then make a decision. Research is one of the best ways to know about financing RV. Ask your friends/Relatives, search online, call financing companies/banks and visit dealerships. 4. RV price depreciates When you drive your RV from the dealerships it depreciates 20 to 30% instantly. That means one-fourth of the money is already lost even if you sell it the next day. That’s why there is a risk associated with RV loan higher than the vehicle price. To avoid this try to make a large downpayment as it will make sure you owe less when trying to sell it. Another way is to buy a small RVs and then climb the ladder. Buying a small RV means you can pay a loan easily and can sell it to buy a better one. It’s a long process but believe us you will live in peace. Further Reading: RV Depreciation Rate 5. Do check your credit score The price of your RV is not only the price you pay, but it also contains the loan terms and interest rates. Your credit rating plays an important role in saving your money. A credit score of 660 or higher is considered a good credit rating and lower than means you could expect an interest rate of up to 24%. Yes, it will depend upon the country/state you live but eventually, you have to pay a higher price for the RV. RV financing is not like an auto loan because there are many options that you won’t get in a normal auto loan. Like, if RV is your primary or secondary residence then it will decrease your federal taxes (only US citizens).

The Complete Guide to Storing Your RV at Home
Tumblr media
So, you want to store your RV at home. That's a nice decision as you will benefit from it, in the long run. But, you have to see both the pros and cons before stepping further. As there is a lot to know about, we will guide you in making the right decision. so let's see how can you store your RV at home.
Why Store Your RV at Home? (Reasons)
First, know the main three reasons which can motivate you further in making the right decision. Yes, your home can be the next place where you can store the RV safely. You may be wondering why not to store the RV in-vehicle storage facilities where they have the facility to store it safely. As you will read through in the article you will find there are pros and cons of both home and storage facility, but there is much reason for storing it in your home. The reasons for storing your RV at home are: 1. Money This is the number one reason, for storing it at home. Money is the driving factor for many decisions we make, including where to keep your RV in offseason. To put your RV in a storage facility you have to pay for it. So, how much you can have to pay. For outdoor facility, you can have to spend between $30 to $100+ per month. The unheated indoor facility will charge more than that, it can charge you between $50 to $125 per month. For heated indoor space, it can cost you anywhere between $100 to $500. There are other factors which can exceed the paying amount like the size of your RV. So, you could end up saving your hard-earned money by storing RV at your home. 2. Easiness If you store it at your home then you can keep the appliances plugged in. Things like the fridge where you can keep food items safely. If some guests are visiting your home then you can cook, sleep and hang out at RV. You can even use it in your free time where you can rest and relax. When you store your RV at home that also means you can leave with it for camping very quickly. You could make a quick plan with your family or friends and leave for it. You only need some time to keep the essential things, food, and your pals, and you are ready to leave. By keeping it in storing facility it will not be possible. Storage facilities often need advanced notice or may only allow access from 9 AM to 9 PM, which can ruin or delay your plans. There are other settings which have to be finished before you can be ready for the trip. Things like bringing it to your home and checking it, whether things are OK for a long trip or not. 3. RV Care & Maintenance Like any other vehicle, your RV needs the care to serve you for long. It is not easy and economical to store your RV in the storage facility where your RV can just be left out. It will be left in cold and exposed to snow and rain which can damage the exterior. You can also come to the facility every month to check it out but that's not so easy, You know it what we are trying to explain here. When your RV is in front of you, often you will take care of it. You would be doing routine maintenance.  You can have a better sleep knowing in what condition your RV is.
Questions You Need to Ask Before Storing Your RV at Home
Before you plan to cancel your storage at the local facility and store the RV at home you have to ask certain questions to yourself. Sadly, storing RV at home is not for everyone. 1. Do you have space to store your RV at home? This is the first question which an RV owner should ask. Only you can know, is there any place where you can store it safely at your home. Use this guideline if you have problem estimating it. If you are a Class A motorhome owner and have a single-story house without any additional space then chances are you probably cannot store it. If you have Class B or Class C then you could make out space for it. A Class B Motorhome is anywhere between 16 to 22 feet whereas, a Class C Motorhome is 21 to 35 feet long. 2. Where you can keep your RV at home? Next, you have to decide where you should keep your RV, commonplace for them are the driveway, backyard or the garage. So, if you have few cars at your home then you may not use the driveway as it will be blocked by the RV. If your garage is big enough to store an RV then it’s a piece of good news. You may have to clear the space in the garage for the RV as it might take up the whole place. 3. Is it legal to store your RV at home? It depends on the country or state where you live in. Many countries have laws defining the above question. Like for instance if you are affiliated with a homeowners association you may not be allowed to park your RV at home. If you get a green signal from the homeowners association then you may have to check it with your local municipality. Be sure to check the law or you could be fined and in the worst case, your RV can even be towed away. 4. Will your RV be safe and protected at home? Safety and maintenance are the points where you agreed to an RV at your home, but what’s the point if it stands on the driveway exposed to rain, sunlight, snow, and theft. It is no better than standing in an outdoor storage facility. If it is not in garage then you have to find a safe spot for it or make it safe. 5. Can it annoy your family, neighbors or even spouse? Your family has enjoyed the summers in RV but will they be happy to see it in your garage or driveway all winter. What about your neighbors, if it is not standing on your property then they can complain against you. You have to sort it out with your family and neighbors before planning to store the RV at home. 6. Do you save money in the long run? Maybe you have to upgrade the garage for your RV, then the cost will subtract the amount you save. Keeping your RV at garage may also ask for a renovation such as extending the space to keep the RV. You have to make sure you are saving money by keeping it at your home. If it is a onetime investment then it’s ok because after that you may not have to spend any money on the garage.
Where You Can Store Your RV at Home? (Pros & Cons)
It’s time to store the RV but where you should keep it. Let see what different place at your home are suitable for storing an RV and what pros and cons they have. 1. Driveway Pros: Quick access Saves money Less likely to get vandalized Maintenance Cons: Upset family and neighbors Theft HOA Rules Managing your RV in the Driveway This is one of the commonplace to park a camper if asked by owners. You can see many houses where the camper is parked in the driveway but it has pros and cons. Let’s see them one by one. It is a safer place than most of the storage facilities you have in your nearby local area. Why, because It will be in front of you, and can be taken care of much often. The RV has a less chance of getting vandalized in the driveway than the facility as you can install security cameras or can keep a tight watch on it. There are also cons related to keeping RV in the driveway as your HOA (homeowner’s association) or the landlord may have a rule that can stop you. You also have to check with your local municipality for laws regarding it. Check them first! Space is also a problem as you could end up hitting another vehicle in the driveway. You have to check that the spot is big enough to park the RV without taking space of other cars or vehicles. This can annoy your neighbors very soon. Safety of the RV is also must as there can be gear and other valuable items such as generators and fridge which can easily become a target. You know your area very well which will help in making a decision. 2. Backyard or Side-yard Pros: Saves money Quick access Fewer chances of getting vandalized Maintenance of RV Cons: HOA Rules Exposed to nature Upset Neighbors Theft Backyard is also a space where you can think of storing your RV. It is not possible for every owner but can be a perfect location. Other than saving money it will also be convenient for you to keep regular maintenance of the RV. Because it is in your backyard there are fewer chances of getting vandalized. But, backyard storage has its cons too. Like for instance it will be out and is vulnerable to theft. You have to keep an eye on it or install security cameras. It is also open for elements of nature for the damage so, try to cover it and regularly take a quick view of it. The rain, snow and direct sunlight are not good for the paint. The UV rays from the sun can deteriorate your seals and fade your paint. Your neighbors or neighborhood association may not be pleased with you. If you live in a large home then it is not a problem but for a small house owner, it can be a problem. 3. Garage Pros: Saves money Least chance of getting vandalized Least chance of theft The best protection from nature Quick access Cons: Large RV may not fit You may have to keep other items somewhere else Your garage is the best place to keep your RV safely if space permits. In order to fit your RV inside the garage, you may have to invest money. But, it is a one-time investment after that you save. A standard size garage will be able to fit most of the Class B and some Class C camper, but anything bigger than 35 feet and taller than 9 feet is less likely to fit. Your garage can provide an excellent storage space for the RV from the burglars, vandals and weather extremities. You can save a lot of money on repairs and lost. It will also be very convenient for you to leave for a trip in an hour or on short notice. This point is best. But, there are some cons of storing an RV in the garage. Like for example, you might have many things which are kept in your garage, things like car, tools, bikes, etc. Shifting them to another location can be tricky, especially if you have less space in your home. Shifting them out can mean your RV will have a new shelter! 4. RV Garage Pros: Saves money in the long run Quick Access Protection from snow, rain, and sunlight Less likely to get vandalized Cons: Can cost you much HOA Rules Building Permits If you do not have any place to store your RV, then you can even build an RV garage or shop. This will require space on your property and will be costly. But, this will create a designated storage place for your RV which will be least prone to theft, vandals and extreme weather. If you make a covered space then it could be equivalent to five to six years of the storage facility cost. You have to be dead sure that you need a separate storage place for your RV in your property before moving on. Once you have it you can have a good sleep because you know your RV is in the safest possible place.
Preparing Your RV or Travel Trailer For Winter Storage
After storing the RV in a secured place, it’s time to prepare it for storage. Preparing your RV for the storage or winter months is important as it will be ready to drive for the spring. The following few steps may not apply for all types of RV, but most of them will. 1. Wash the RV This will be the first and basic step to follow. After all that journey the RV has accumulated dust and mud, so to get rid of them, wash it with gentle soap or shampoo. Special attention is needed for the wheels, wheel wall, undercarriage, and the rooftop. Wash thoroughly so that you remove soil from every part especially metal part’s, or they can rust. You also have to use a foaming scrub, with it you can clean it better. 2. Water Tank, Faucets, Drains and Pumps After washing the RV body the next thing is the water system. The water system in an RV consists of drains, pumps, tanks, and faucets. First clean and sanitize the fresh water tank before you store the RV. For this drain all the water from the tank and fill it with fresh water approximately 75%. Now, pour a small cup of bleach and stir the water with some rod or so, that will make the bleach to mix with the water. After 30 minutes drain the water and wash the tank with freshwater until there is no smell of bleach left. Before storing make sure to drain out the tank and let it dry or you can also leave the dump open. For the black water tank and grey water tank, you have to use an enzyme cleaner. Enzyme cleaner works well to clean the tank from any built-up solid waste as well as from bacterial growth. Always, make sure to dump the black water tank first before grey water tank as the greywater can flush out the sewer hose. After cleaning the tanks, you can leave them empty during storage or can also fill them with antifreeze. The problem with anti-freeze is that you have to clean the tank before you can use it. Second, storing water in the tank is not a good idea when you won’t use it for some month. The best is to leave the tank empty. For the pump, first, pressurize it and make sure that the water pump is on. Now, flip on both the cold and hot water valves of the faucets. If you want to reduce the pressure on the faucet and water pump then you have to change out the water inlet screen. For this, you have to power down the water pump and see whether the faucet is open. After this, the pressure would be enough to move out of the faucet through the city water inlet. If the inlet screen is not coming out then use a tool such as a screwdriver to move the valve over the city water inlet screen. Now you are all set to change it with a new one. You have to seal off every faucet across your RV, places like kitchen and bathroom are common but search if your RV have any other place for faucet. If you use anti-freeze then pour it in every drain, it will keep all the drain pipes from freezing in the winter. 3. Heating System Many types of insects and small animals can get attracted to the smell of natural gas. You have to deter them away from your RVs heating system. To do this cover all the vents and intakes of the heating system possibly by a porous cover, like one recommended here. Turn off or unplug any electrical heating elements that you have installed in your water heater. You can even use it in the winters so that you don’t need a separate one and the electrical appliance will also remain in a working condition. Turn off or unplug the water heater so that you can empty it. If it was on for some time then wait for the water to cool down otherwise you could burn your hands. Find the pressure relief of the water heater once the water cools down to drain all the water from it. 4. Seal your RV This is really important stuff to do. Be sure to check the RV underneath, windows, and doors for any vents or exhausts that may let enter insects, rats and other unwanted guests to spend the winter in your RV. You can use expanding foam which seals all these and prevent penetration. Check here to see the recommended Expanding Foam Sealant. Look for any cracks, holes or sign of any damage in the windows and doors. This is a small investment to prevent bigger issues such a water leakage. Look in the owner manual to find which kind of sealant you can use or you can use a high-quality sealant recommended here. Also, make sure to seal the roof vent. 5. Electrical System & Battery Storage Preparation Why it is so important to store RV battery for the winter. If you leave it in RV, then chances are high that the battery will freeze. So, next time when you come back to the RV you will not able to use fridge, lights or anything that runs on electricity. First of all, there are some interior preparations that you have to make before RV storage. Remove the fuse from your fuse box and also remember to turn off batteries at the cutoff switch. Remove all the electrical appliances from the RV if you can and store them inside your house. It is also important that you remove batteries from small things such as flashlight, clocks, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, radio, etc. Take all the appliances and clean them thoroughly, if possible then from inside too. This will remove any possibilities of moisture and mold to damage the thing. Take out the RV battery and clean the outer surface. Now keeping it in a safe place is important. Find a place which is away from children, mild temperature and not humid. Charge the battery to 75 to 80% and then keep it on some plywood or wooden base. 6. Interior & Plumbing Take out any removable furniture such as a table, chairs etc from the RV. Do not leave any clothes, blankets, hats or any such garments. Clean the drawer, cabinet or any shelf you have in your kitchen or anywhere. Take out everything from utensils to canned food, clean everything, even the trashcan. Check the AC for any plumbing vents for leaks or any signs of damage. It is better to fix them now for the next time you are in your RV. Clean the fridge and oven and keep baking soda for odors. If you have propane gas cylinder, then take it out and keep it in the garage or in the house safely away from children. Take out the TV, gaming system or any other expensive item from the RV and keep it in your house. Now clean the interior, so that no place is left. Clean the floor, walls, door and windows glass. 7. Tire Storage If you are going to park the RV without removing the tires then make sure to check the tire pressure in all tires and inflate and deflate according to the manufacturer's recommendations. It is also recommended that you periodically move the RV so that tires do not develop a flat spot. If you are parking it in your driveway or backyard then cover the tires to protect them from the sun. You can even consider getting leveling jacks to give additional support to tires. This also prevents flat spots. Remember that your RV will be slightly off the ground so make sure to secure it. If you are storing the RV outside then cover the tires with the tire covers, like one recommended here, it will protect the tires from sun damage. 8. Engine and Fuel The engine is the heart of your RV, so take care of it. You have to fill the tank with fuel and use fuel stabilizer on the engine this will decrease the risk associated with excessive condensation. Keep the engine on for 10 to 15 minutes so that the heat of the engine dispels the fuel stabilizer on it completely. Add antifreeze to the windshield washer solution so that it won’t freeze. When water freezes, its volume increases and due to this it can make a crack. Once in a month try to start the engine for at least 1 or 2 hours, it will make sure that it remains in the working condition. If you have a generator then it is applicable for it too. Read the owner’s manual for further instructions. 9. Slide-outs If your RV has any slideouts then lubricate the seals and the mechanical hardware. It will keep then perfect for the next time. 10. Insects/Bugs/Critters It is important to seal off your RV as insects can enter from the tiniest hole and lay eggs. It can be anywhere your garage, driveway, and backyard for sure. First, do not leave any food or the smell of it in your RV. This will prevent some of them but not all. Critters like rats, mice, bats, and even raccoons love inhabited left places. Rats and mice can make lots of damage to the RV electric system and even to the furniture. That’s why use pest control and regularly check the RV for any signs of the uninvited. 11. Covering Your RV Cover your RV whether it is parked in driveway, backyard or garage. This is one of the best ways to keep it clean especially if it is outside. Dust, sun and bad weather will damage and fade it, day by day. You won’t notice it because you see it every day. But, in a few months, there will be a huge difference between earlier parked RV and the damaged one. It will also insulate the RV to some extent. You can even spray some pest and critter repellent on it to deter small animals and insects. 12. Security Measures If your RV is standing in the driveway then there is a high chance of theft and it remains even if your RV is in the garage. But, you cannot take chance wherever it is. You may have to install security cameras for it. (Security cameras are a good choice even if you don’t have an RV at your home) Other security feature can cost you up to thousands of dollars if you want to tighten the RV security. The driveway is important as it is also open for vandals who won’t spare anything just because of their nature. But you cannot leave your RV for any damage so take appropriate measures for its security. Also, invest in good quality locks as it adds ups to security. Gate of good thickness and of metal are better. 13. Insurance of the RV Your RV must have some kind of insurance which may cover accidents as well as roadside assistance. But, do the insurance policy covers the damage done in the situation under storage or theft. Do it covers damage done by animals, vandals, and weather. If it doesn’t then check your policy to update it. You cannot skip this step if you want 100% assurance of peace in mind.
