Of course he didn’t know. Niwa wasn’t one to keep tabs on everyone- not like him. Akahi knew how Niwa felt about Hala (mixed feelings between wanting a normal relationship between them, a father and son, and hating him- Akahi himself felt no love for his Uncle. Not after all he had done.)

Inhale, exhale. It should be him who tells Niwa, it wouldn’t be right if someone else did it. After all, who else better to be there for his wonderful, darling cousin other than Akahi?
