Man, I feel awful for Akihito. It's like he's some kind of magnet for all these creeps, perverts and/or rapists. Asami (his damn boyfriend), Fei Long, Yuri, Mikhail (to a smaller degree), Sakazaki, and Sudou. My gosh, give the poor boy a break. Or at the very least let him kill one of those sick fuckers.
Yeah… Sadly Akihito’s good looks have been repeatedly used as an excuse to have nearly all males in this story act in the worst, most inappropriate way. If you take the time to see the compilation of tropes in the Finder Series, you will see that most of them were heavily used in the earlier volumes, and a good number of them involve Akihito getting abused in order to advance the plot somehow.
Then again… It’s what we were talking about the other day. When we remember that on the early days of yaoi, it served the exclusive purpose of providing a venue for women to explore their own sexuality, and that rape fantasy played a huge part in the whole thing, it is not surprising that Akihito received all that “attention” and seemed to suffer little to no emotional trauma. The point of the multiple unfortunate encounters was not to delve into his psychology, anyway.
Fast forward a few years, though, and the narrative in Finder (and in many other BL stories) begin to gain more complexity. Yes, Akihito still gets involved in imbroglios with Sakazaki and Sudou, but now those situations are episodic and the main plot is taking us elsewhere. Now it is about the rebels, about people finding their place in a world that has become disturbingly confusing because of their emotions, it is about alliances, betrayals, difficult decisions. The time for Akihito to get revenge for all the pain he has been through is long gone (I think it was never there, to be honest).
So… yes, Anon. I do agree that Akihito has been through hell and back and in any other scenario I too would hope he would at the very least throw a few punches and break a couple of bones (preferably Sudou’s). Not kill, though. As I see it, Akihito is the kind of guy that wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if he was ever responsible for a murder, and even though that too would make a superb hook for many angsty chapters, that’s not what Finder is about, is it? All we get is mild angst at best and I’m okay with that. Fanfiction already does a great job breaking my heart more often than not!
