Because it’s [almost] never about affordability, it’s about accountability, and not wanting to take it.

Utopian techno-futurist concept: a tofu container which has a peel-away lid which is not bonded more strongly to the container than to itself, and as such can simply be peeled away rather than being iteratively torn into shreds or cut with a knife.

i find the way that many online spaces talk about "leather vs pleather" to be really frustrating and filled with misinformation, and this thread is no exception.
firt of all, i have not found a good source comparing the lifetime impact of different animal leathers with different plant based/artificial leather. so making such a blanket statement as "leather is better than pleather" seems to be difficult at best. i would love to learn what the sources are for that.
my main annoyance with this debate is that people tend to ignore just how environmentally destructive animal leather is, usually.
Most leather is chromium tanned. It’s horrible for the environment and often horrible for the people working in the industry and those living nearby, it is highly toxic, a suspected carginogene and it is not considered biodegradable, or recyclable.
painting such a product as "sustainable" is questionable.
these discussions also tend to conflate cheap fast fashion pleather products with durable vegan alternatives. I’ve had my vegan vejas for 5+ years now. I recently got the heels patched up, but other than that they’re still completely fine. My vegan dr martens are about 5 years old as well and still as good as new, even though I’ve been wearing them every single winter.
fast fashion products do not hold up well. no matter what they are made out of.
the vast majority of the clothes industry is unsustainable, employs horrific working condition and causes severe environmental damage. this obsession people have with pleather seems to me to have very little to do with any real attempts at changing that. instead, it seems to be a way for people to paint vegans as environmentally unsustainable, which is ironic considering that vegan diets on average have a far, far smaller environmental impact than those which include animal products.
lastly "imo" is not a reference. production of pleather is worse than chromium tanning? provide the references. i'd love to see them and learn more!

Factory farm animals are the most abused animals IN THE WORLD. If you claim to be “against animal abuse” but don’t address abuse in the meat/dairy/egg industries, you’re not actually against animal abuse.

People: *make offensive anti-vegan jokes, joke about animal suffering, shit on animal activism, shit on vegans and treat vegans like shit on a regular basis*
People: I have nothing against veganism! I don't hate vegans at all! Why are vegans getting so upset, anyway?

imagine being stuck in a cramped plane seat for your entire life, on a plane packed with people. or picture living day in, day out, in the same house, staring at the same four walls, seeing the same four faces every single day. the stress, the discomfort, the sheer boredom – most people would find this horrific, regardless of age, education or intelligence. it would be torture.
But somehow, we're supposed to believe that the pigs in those tight farrowing crates are just fine with it, right? And that elephant cooped up in the same enclosure day after day – must be living the dream. the fish swimming laps in its aquarium, showing all the signs of zoochosis– but hey, it's not like it's smart enough to feel, right?
its all fine, because it has to be, right? impossible to know if the animals in these situations are suffering, they can't talk after all

The media makes it very hard for us to convince people to go vegan sometimes.
They ask, “why should I go vegan?”
You explain about the animal cruelty, the environment, the humanitarian and health issues. Overall, you say how veganism is morally rewarding as well as being rewarding in means of long-term health and well-being.
Then, the commercial shouts, “GET A HAMBURGER WITH CHEESE ONE DOLLA”
“OOH MAN ONE DOLLA AND I GET TO STUFF MY FACE THAT’S AWESOME”
“But… morally rewarding ;_;”
These big business slaughter and torture tycoons know that it’s pretty easy to buy someone’s ethics and decency away. Waving a 99 cent burger back and forth in their face like a hypnotist, chanting “you don’t care how this burger gets heeeere, it’s youuuurrrssss, you can have everything you waaant, just don’t wooorry how it got theeeeereeee don’t wooorrry about your heaaaalth don’t worry about humans and animals and your home plannnnet aren’t our artificial taste and texture modifiiieeers so deliciouuusss”.

when non-vegans say stuff like "just stick to traditional vegan foods instead of trying to recreate dishes with meat/dairy" I always think
veganism is not about vegan food being universally liked, it's about doing whatever you can to avoid paying for animal abuse and death
true, naturally vegan foods from cultures all over the world are already tasty enough and I'd be happy to eat those forever in order to avoid animal abuse. but also:
if you think lentil patties, soy veggie balls, seitan sausages, or almond and miso vegan cheese made at home taste "bad" you don't know how to cook. sorry to bear the bad news.
