[Good Omens S.2 Chapter 5] - Hypothesis on Ms. Cheng & higher ranks of Angels/Demons.
I don't know if anyone has talked about it already, but I feel like Ms. Cheng is more than a simple human neightboor.
Quick re-cap of the few scenes she is in:
First interaction is right when Aziraphale invites her to the ball. Crowley is there too.
Before she enters the bookshop she looks back at Crowley talking with Nina at the coffee shop. (When demons start to congregate around the bookshop too)
Then, inside, it's the small conversation with Ms. Sandwitch, where she explains what a "seamstress" is. Then Ms. Cheng basically wanks a fan, probably to hint the tone they are insinuating.
BUT THEN. Then. There is "Mr. and Ms. Cheng deleted scene".
Aziraphale presents Ms. and Mr. Cheng to Nina the moment Ms. Cheng hits her husband with a fan on the back (trying to hit Gabriel-the-fly?), and when he asks about this she responds: (it didn't had subtitles and english it not my first language so. bear with me.)
"I've never so much pick some of these devices before this evening."
Subtle.
So, my hypothesis is that this Ms. Chang is actually a demon.
There's been attempts on Heaven's side to not only know where Gabriel is but also to know what the fuck that 25 Lazari miracle was. Something that is lightly left to be drowned by the Nina and Maggie arc.
"Heaven" (only low-level angels in my opinion) sort of bought that it was Aziraphale making Maggie and Nina fall in love.
But Hell? Hell must have notice it too right? And the thing is of course they didn't get a word of Crowley reasuring that it was him or Aziraphale, they got nothing out of him. Then Shax only shearched about Gabriel thanks to Beelzebub who obviously cares more about Gabriel... but what about the rest of the "higher" demons?
They must also have only known the location not the ones who did it. Just like Heaven. But I think the higher ranks of Hell and Heaven would do things differently than what the Archangels and Shax did. Like not really appear in front of them, in their true forms, and demand the thuth.*coff* But maybe like going there themselves and investigate the place or area... stealthily.
Which I also think the Metatron falls into this category of "sending someone stealthy".
The Metatron probably was informed of the 25 Lazari miracle and thought it was Aziraphale who did it, the same angel that helped stoping Armagedon, so this can be quite messy if this angel that thinks different than the rest is fucking around with power. So, the best way to make sure that source of power don't fuck around is to have some (or total) control over him. Until now they didn't care too much about Aziraphale. But now this happened, and days later "validates" him enough to be the next main Archangel.
And by validate him I mean that I fully believe "Give him coffee or give him death." was the perfect metaphore for the Metatron to make Aziraphale choose his fate.
A.k.a: Take the coffee and agree to stay in Heaven under my supervision as the new Archangel... or otherwise die because I will erase you from the Book of Life. *smiles*
So yes, I think Ms. Cheng works on Hell's behalf. Go stealthily and get the information herself.
Why I think she is a Demon and not an Angel? Based on all the scenes named previously:
She was the only one besides Maggie that did not fuss about the meeting. AND NOW she has been explicitly invited by Aziraphale to enter the bookshop without a problem. Mind you, I think this would also mean she can go inside the bookshop next season if she wants to.
She probably recognized Crowley, but as the traitor and possible suspect that he is, she wouldn't risk to talk with him and blow the cover. She works alone in this one. Or with Mr. Cheng but idk, he didn't talk much so he may be just a human.
I think the moment she stops to look at Crowley and Nina, she stops because she senses the demons coming too, just like Crowley did a few minutes later.
"I've never so much pick some of these devices before this evening." We can sort of guess that none other angel nor demon appart from Crowley and Aziraphale has been in contact with many humans. They don't usually pick traits or understand many things about them.
And lastly, she is a menace that wanks a fan... which I want to think it's because she's Asmodeus... you know... the demon of lust. But anyway she too seemed to understand and liked what Ms. Sandiwtch was trying to say.
I'm aware that Crowley didn't sensed a thing when he was in front of her, and I'm aware that she did react surprised when the "civilian casualty" of the night happened. But demons (actually higher demons & higher angels I would think) should be, in my humble opinion, good at lying, hence, good actors.
If she is a normal human... well, I used my brain for once after a long time, and I hope anyone really just reads it and find it funny or crazy.
That's all, thank you!
