(Before angry weebs say this is a case of localizers taking liberties, let me explain the original context, as I read Japanese:

Whenever they say "man" in any p4 related content, nine times out of ten they're translating the word 漢. Which is a very gendered, and kind of outdated term to refer to a brave and honorable man. Since East Asia is uh, extremely patriarchical even today, no equivalent term exists for women. However there are very rare cases when heroic women are referred to as this as well, but usually when they are praised for having traditionally "male" qualities, such as physical strength or martial prowess. Mulan being a well known example.

Now ONLY P4 is obsessed with this word. As far as I know the only place this word shows up in P3 is on the back of the Taiko outfit you can get in Tartarus, the joke being, it's an old word that people don't use much IRL anymore, because only old people do Taiko. WHY P4 is obsessed with this word is a whole essay that I won't add into this shitpost addendum because there's a l o t to unpack but

Basically, the qualities of a brave and honorable man is not limited to a person's physical body. Whether they intended it to be a comment on gender equality or trans rights doesn't matter because I'm claiming this for both suck it terfs)

#another thing to note is that you'll notice that its the kan in 漢字 (kanji) because 漢 is actually the ethnic word for Han Chinese #in modern mandarin its been simplified to 汉 to be faster to write #kanji being borrowed from china #its just that ingrained in east asian culture #like i tried to think of an english equivalent but can only come up with warriormale #like yknow the gimmick account #actually warriormale and akihiko would be great friends tbh #actually you know the mulan song that sings about how to be a man but absolutely does not mention anything about having body parts #it's that its exactly that

I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS

So I have a few criteria’s for robot faves.

1. “Robot” can be any type of artificial being. Mechanical, homunculus, automata, reanimated corpse a la Frankenstein, war forged, enchanted dolls, self aware AI, shitty clones… etc.

2. This being must have an existential crisis.

3. The existential crisis must be about autonomy and desire to live

4. Their humanity is NOT finally proven by falling in love.

5. They do not end up sacrificing themselves for a human. They can try, but it must fail.

So in no particular order:

Aigis (Persona 3)

Data (Star trek)

Ennis (Baccano!)

Gale (Quantum Devil Saga)

Jenny (My Life As A Teenage Robot)

Hatsune Miku (Vocaloid has a lot of existential crisis songs ok)

HAL 9000 (Space Odyssey)

Arthur (Strange Journey. Unfortunately does not satisfy the final condition but considering the main character is also there I’ll allow it)

TARS (Interstellar. Similar vein in that since it’s a double sacrifice I’ll allow it. Doesn’t have an existential crisis or is arguably sentient but I LOVE TARS MVP of the damn movie )

Friday (Empire of Corpses. This one is less of a character and more of my appreciation of the metaphor. I teared up)

As for why I love robots having existential crisises… idk Big Mood? It’s the struggle between free will and your obligations. Your duty to your society vs your own well being and wishes. Finding a meaning of life after having served your purpose. The inherent horror of being forced into a body when your consciousness wants to be formless. That’s the good shit
