Inside a German U-boat, WWI. A submarine captain named Martin Niemöller recounted his naval war:
“On the 20th October, as night falls, we sink an unknown - probably British - steamer, near the coast, by means of a torpedo after a gunnery duel. On the 21st we have a stand-up fight with another British steamer which first comes towards us and then turns away. It is Sunday and the steamer is lucky to begin with, as she increases her distance and we have to cease firing. Shortly after noon the SS Gryfavele appears to have a hot bearing as she eases down and we are able to reopen fire. She runs ashore in the surf. After he crew have landed, we destroy her by gunfire and her remains are then not recognisable as a steamship.”
