I have found deep inside me a tempest of words. The result is this, My first poetry book, christened Swords or Words, a collection of sixty two poems. It is often said poets write themselves into their poems, this is my attempt in verbalising the said quote.

let’s talk about new romantics…
i see a lot of people interpret this song in the literal sense of “romance,” as in l o v e but as an english major let me break it down a bit and explain why taylor is a literal genius.
first, you need to know there are two types of romantics: there’s love romance and then the romantic era movement in literature and art (romanticism) which is not about love but is a time period in which themes of solitude, emotions, love of nature, freedom from rules, individualism, etc were celebrated and popular. so she’s not really referring to romantic love in the song but the movement romanticism
“please leave me stranded it’s so romantic”
she’s saying leave me alone, I’m thriving in my independence basically. she talks about feeling intense emotions i.e. crying tears of mascara in the bathroom, being bored, feeling attacked, etc. but she brushes it all off and “the best people in life are free” (free being free to feel, free to roam, free to be who she is)
she’s putting a spin on it. It’s very clever because at this time everyone thought she was love obsessed and only cared about romantic relationships and this song plays on people’s expectations of that while really being about self expression, emotion, and independence
she’s saying “we’re the New Romantics” as in “we’re the new romantics who feel things, thrive on emotion, value independence, the new writers (musicians) of a romanticism-like era.
