A Rare Viking Sword, 10th/11th century
In excavated condition, with broad pattern-welded blade of flattened hexagonal section, iron hilt comprising cross-guard of tapering rectangular section and slender pommel of ‘tea cozy’ form, each inlaid with a series of silver quatrefoils within a linear framework, and later wood grip.

Stiletto Dagger
Dated: 17th century
Culture: North Italian
Measurements: overall length 25.8 cm
Entirely made of iron, the blade of the dagger is of square section and has grooved faces. There’s a long knot carved with floral motifs, while the grip features short quillons ending in knots. The grip has pierced, stylised dragons, while the pommel features an effigy.

Yatagan Sword
Culture: Ottoman, Turkey
Dated: 1811
Medium: steel, walrus ivory, gold, silver
Measurements: length 69cm
This yatagan (or yataghan) sword has a steel blade richly overlaid with gold and with a large walrus ivory handle embellished with silver-gilt filigree and applique mounts and decoration is dated 1811. The gold overlay to both sides of the blade is extensive and complete. It includes a tughra for Sultan Mahmud II as well as Koranic verses. This sultan’s tughra reads ‘Mahmud Han bin Abdulhamid mazaffer daima’, meaning 'Mahmud Khan, son of Abdulhamid is forever victorious.
The sword is of typical form in the that blade is curved, long and relatively thin. There is no guard for the hilt and the pommel spreads out in large 'ears’. A similar-style yatagan, although with a less prominent handle, was offered by Spink in its 'Treasures of the Courts’ exhibition and catalogue (1994).
