PRO-014 Pro Tips How To Build A Custom Theme
Understanding meta tags is the first step to making custom themes. Theme designers create custom themes using HTML and CSS. They add meta tags so people can edit theme styles from the customization panel without having to edit the code.
Meta tags control powerful style elements like background, layout, and navigation. If you’ve ever edited the HTML in a theme, you may have seen something like this in the <head>.
Tumblr media
This line adds the change background color option to the customization panel.
Tumblr media
But Tumblr still needs to know what element of your blog this option controls.
Further down in <style>, there’s a line that assigns this option to your blog’s background color.
Tumblr media
This line tells Tumblr to use the Background color you choose in the panel as the blog’s background color.

MYT-003 Myths & Truths Can I Restore My Deleted Blog
You can’t restore a deleted blog. However, you may be able to reclaim your tumblr URL. Once your blog is deleted, it’s permanent. This means that posts reblogged or originally uploaded to the blog are also gone. Getting your old URL back is a good alternative. Especially for blogs with a strong brand presence.
Retrieving an old URL depends on how long ago you deleted your blog and the popularity of the URL. Most blogs that have not been logged into for longer than 1 year are up for grabs. Even if the blog has been posting.
You can check if your old URL is available by searching the address on your browser. If you see this screen, there may be hope.
Tumblr media
If not, there’s a chance the blog has been inactive but not deleted. In which case, you may be able to reclaim the URL. Try creating a new Tumblr account with your old URL. If you already have a primary blog, try creating a new side blog using your old URL. If the URL is not available, you’ll receive this message.
Tumblr media
Since Tumblr Staff cannot contact users to retrieve URLs, you’ll have to start over with a new blog.

STA-004 Staying Active Surfing Reblog Chains
If you ever come across a reblog like this on your dash, consider yourself lucky.
Tumblr media
This is a reblog chain. Reblog chains start with the original post, then extend with reblogs and comments. Surfing a reblog chain means clicking the blogs in the trail one by one.
Surfing long reblog chains can lead to interesting discoveries. They can either be a time machine with  predictions from blogs in the past that came true. Or an inside joke with thousands of people. Eitherway, they’re a great jumping off point for finding next content.

PRO-009 Pro Tips Stop Stealing My Art!
Everyone has their own definition of art theft. For some people, it’s only when you screenshot art and repost it without credit. While other people consider using their art as a header without permission theft.
There’s no guaranteed way to prevent people from stealing your art. But there are ways to deter people.
Put a notice in your bio
Putting a simple line in your bio asking people not to repost without credit goes a long way. People may not know it’s your original art and assume it’s okay to repost. While it won’t stop everyone, it lets people know where you stand.
Turn on asks
An open line of communication makes it easier for people to message you about using your work. You may be more inclined to let someone use your art if it’s just for an avatar or a header.
Source your posts.
Sourcing your work tells people it’s your original content. It also shows up as a link to your blog if your post is embedded to other sites.
Watermark your posts
It’s tricky to do a watermark well without ruining your art. However, placing it somewhere close to the center at a low opacity makes cropping it out harder for thieves. Consider using “yourblog.tumblr.com” or “@yourusername”.

MYT-002 Myths & Truths Is There A Best Time To Post?
Peak traffic times on Tumblr are between 5pm ET to 8pm ET everyday. This usually means posting after work and school will get you more exposure. But that’s not the case for every blog. To find the highest engagement time for your blog, check out your activity page.
The activity page shows your top posts and times when your blog had the most engagement. The activity page is only accessible on Desktop.
You can learn more about using the activity page like a pro here. But for now, here’s how to use the activity page to see the best times to post.
Desktop
Click the human icon on your dashboard
Tumblr media
Select “Activity” on the sidebar
Tumblr media
You’ll now see a graph with dates and times. The graph shows the amount of engagement on your posts hourly or daily.
Tumblr media
Use the filters to show activity Last month > Hourly. Filtering for the last month gives you a larger sample size than the default last day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you look at your graph, answer these questions:
Is there a certain time where posts spike in notes?
Which time of day has the lowest spikes?
Which day of the week had the most engagement ?
Scheduling posts around these times ensures you’re posting when your followers are most active.

PRO-008 Pro Tips Decluttering Your Blog
When you’re mainly on your dashboard, it’s easy to forget what followers see on your blog. Decluttering your blog ensures your blog looks the way it should to new followers. It also lets you manage your growing blog with less effort. Decluttering could be removing incorrect tags, cleaning up your theme, deleting forgotten drafts, and updating information on your pages. Here are some tips for decluttering your blog.
Update Your About Page And Description
Routinely check that the information in your description and your about page is up to date. Make edits to your description and any custom blog pages regularly. New followers will rely on your description to know what they expect you to post. If you have an about page, you’ll want to make sure the information is still accurate.
Choose a Good Theme
An organized theme makes it easier for people on desktop to navigate.  Choose a theme that prioritizes your posts and clearly displays tagged pages.
Clean Up Your Tagged Pages
Sometimes tags are accidentally added to posts that don’t match the tag. These posts show up on the wrong tagged pages and can be confusing to new visitors. Check to make sure that the posts on your tagged pages all fit.
Delete Old drafts
Drafts should be posts that you plan to eventually complete. Removing drafts you’re no longer working on gives you a clean slate to add fresh ideas. Here’s how to manage your drafts on desktop and mobile.
Desktop
Click the human icon
Tumblr media
Select “Drafts”
Tumblr media
From here you can edit or post your drafts
Tumblr media
Mobile
Tap the “General Settings” icon

Tap “Drafts”

PRO-007 Pro Tips Avoiding Burnout
Being a content creator can get overwhelming. You might feel pressure to create more and more to a point where you’ve lost interest in what you do. The most important thing to remember is you started a blog to have fun. Here are some tips for avoiding burnout.
Post Follower Submitted Content
Fans of your work love what you do. And people like an opportunity to be recognized by other creators. You can supplement your content by posting submissions from followers.
Schedule and Log Off
There’s no rule that says you have to post a certain amount of times per day. Instead of creating posts and uploading them all at once, try scheduling them ahead of time. Create a new upload schedule where you space your posts further apart. Enjoy your “me time.”
Create a side blog
Making similar content can be draining. Creating a side blog on a different topic can reenergize and inspire you. Sometimes you learn something new to bring to your main blog.
Add Members
If you’re running a side blog, invite friends or followers to be members and help you run it. This reduces the work you have to do and could lead to better content.

STA-003 Staying Active Using Queue
An easy way to keep your blog active is to use a queue. Queue automatically publishes a set number of posts throughout the day or week. Unlike scheduling, you don’t have to manually pick a time on each post.

Desktop
Click the Reblog button
Click the drop down arrow next to “Reblog”
Tumblr media
Select “Add to queue”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mobile
Tap the Rebiog button
Tap the three dots at the top of the post next to “Reblog”
Tumblr media
Tap “Queue”
Tumblr media
You can also long press on the reblog button to see more options.

Slide down to the “Queue” icon.

PRO-006 Pro Tips Raising Your Search Rank
Use the power of tags and custom post urls to get to the top of Google. Search engines use keywords to choose the best content to show. These keywords include your post tags and the post URL.
If you run an 80’s Italian fashion blog, you should consistently tag your posts “#80s #italian #fashion.” The more people interact with your posts, the more Google assumes your blog has valuable information on “80s Italian fashion.”
Custom URLs also bump up your rank. Normally when you make a post, the link ends in a string of numbers.
Tumblr media
If you replace those numbers with keywords, search engines will use that information to show your post.
Tumblr media
Best practice is to break up the URL with hyphens. This way Google reads “80s-italian-fashion” as three separate keywords and not one long word. Here’s how to add a custom post URL on desktop.
Desktop
Click the gear icon in the top right corner
Tumblr media
Type your custom url. Make sure the keywords are separated by hyphens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your post URL now includes a custom url.

GN-004 Getting Noticed How To Promote Your Blog Externally
Promoting your blog doesn’t only happen on Tumblr. Consider these tips if you’re looking to extend your blog’s reach on other platforms.
Source Your Posts If you’re an original content creator, sourcing your posts does double duty. If someone embeds your post on another site, often the source links back to your blog.
Share on Twitter Tumblr allows your posts to automatically repost to Twitter. Every time you post, it’s also shared to your Twitter feed.
Link In Bio Add your blog URL to your profiles on other social media platforms.
Get A Custom Domain Creating a custom domain keeps your blog on Tumblr and also makes a stronger brand presence for outside users.
Watermark Your Original Work Add your blog name or URL as a watermark on content. When it’s snagged and placed somewhere else, they'll know who originally created it.
Share to Niche Forums After you’ve found your niche, join similar communities on other platforms. Share the content from your blog to these platforms to find new followers.

PRO-005 Pro Tips Using The Activity Page Like A Pro
Tumblr’s activity page shows your top posts and follower trends. Understanding the activity page can help you decide the type of content to post and find the most engaged people in your community. It can also indicate which days are best to post based on engagement.
The activity page is only available on desktop. To see your activity page:
Click the human icon at the top right of your dashboard.
Tumblr media
Select your blog
Tumblr media
Select “Activity”
Tumblr media
You’ll first see your blog’s hourly activity from the last day.
Tumblr media
Notes are your combined likes, reblogs, and replies from the last day.
Tumblr media
New followers you gained from the last day.
Tumblr media
And your total follower count.
Tumblr media
The default activity page view is last day/hourly. But you’ll want a larger sample of posts to see a trend. So change the time period from “last day” to “last month”
Tumblr media
Hovering over the graph points shows the total notes on your blog from that day. It also shows the top post, the post that received the most notes that day.
Tumblr media
Pay attention to which posts you see as top posts. Typically, you’ll see older posts as top posts because it takes time to circulate everyone's dashboard.
However, if a very recent post is the top post, it means it’s getting more engagement than your older content. This could indicate that content resonates more with your followers.
If a very old post is suddenly a top post, it may have been shared by a larger blog. This could lead to new people visiting your blog. You may want to reblog this post with a reply to take advantage of the traffic.
