(at ur tags) i doubt they thought a lot at all about the lore, but this entire idea here is an amazing headcanon and i love it
I like the headcanon that if all the alicorns from G4 are dead by G5, Celestia and Luna sort of became one with the sun and moon as they passed and that's how the day/night cycle keeps going.
Also I like to think that the ray of sunshine that directed Sunny's attention towards the earth pony crystal was actually Celestia purposefully showing the way. Like, they're not physically around to guide and help, but their spirit still kind of lingers on. Idk. I just think it's a sweet thought.

(i ranted a LOT here, so critical post referencing your original take under the cut. i get what u mean but overall, saying “bigotry bad” doesn’t make a good show, which is what we’d want from mlp. even kids might find it boring because it falls flat with any actual story besides “ bigotry bad, friendship is magic”)
the thing is, the way that the bigotry in mlp could be explained would only be “justified” if you think magic is inherently bad, or something.
the story falls flat because of how they show the way things are, because there’s no story or lore to it. the most of it is just “oh im angry because miscommunication” and its fixed when... a pony puts crystals together. except she doesn’t?
they could have vaguely explained how the ponies got separated, how they lost their magic, there’s so many points where they explained random nonsense (and shoved in quips about “social media” and stuff) when they could have said things about how they got this way.
did the ponies lose their magic and then separate, or did they lose their magic BECAUSE they separated and created their own, different worlds. its the magic of friendship, so them hating each other would make sense, and it’d have been interesting to see that plot showcased as people actively unlearning their prejudices and knowing they have a long way to go, or something like that. not just “they get chased by a creepily militarized earth pony and then some nerd puts rocks together and gets wings and now we’re all friends somehow”
it rushed an entire season’s worth of story. yeah, it does fit as a pilot, but... it’s so rushed as a movie that i wished they DIDN’T put this out. and it makes me scared for what’s after. because the main character’s already an alicorn, are they gonna start the series with her as an alicorn? or are they gonna redo the plot of the movie and actually build it up properly? but we’ve already seen it happen in the movie, just re-hashing it now feels.. bland. unless it’s a rewrite from a fan because yall mlp fans write such good stories.
it’s... where can you go from here? the movie could have gave us some intriguing lore at the least, to hype us up for the new season, but i don’t see anything besides something similar to how the original show explained how equestria used to be a bunch of different sections of ponies and then friendship happened and now they’re together in canterlot or something. there’s NOTHING that shows this series as interesting. there’s no plot, no lore.
i just wanted more, you know? bigotry is bad but lore is important to a story, and actual explanation makes sense. if it’s because harmony needs to be kept in the world and the harmony was disrupted somehow, explain how! why did the ponies get separated after twilight and the mane 6? how many generations have people lived through to get here? has it been only a few dozen years or has it been centuries? millenia? how did the dad know about the mane 6?
tl;dr: i wish they had plot because yeah bigotry bad but this, in your words, is meant to be a “pilot episode”! and yet it rushed everything, made decently forgettable characters, made some pretty uncomfy implications, and didn’t even give us lore to get interested in the story.
I dont get why so many people think mlp a new generation not explaining why the ponies are separated is bad ... like yeah from a lore standpoint maybe, but the movie is basically a pilot episode for the new series (that will come out around a full year after it by current estimates) and something that can be watched as a standalone my little pony product,,,, the movie is a basic Bigotry Bad plot, and most cases of trying to handle that topic using fantasy have fallen flat on their face by explaining Why the bigotry occurs because they make it seem almost justifiable ? Zootopia being the most well-known example - its completely justified by the narrative for prey animals to be afraid of predators, because predators used to kill and eat prey animals, this is the FIRST THING the movie tells you, so on top of everything else gross about making a race allegory out of that, it frames bigots as having to get over a "justifiable" fear
mlp is a franchise for young children . it's anti-bigotry message doesn't need to be muddied with lore or explanation when it would be actively detrimental to getting the point across

MLP Gen 5 / A New Generation Critique Post! Spoilers inbound!
(also, ask to tag if anyone actually sees this n needs a tw / cw)
okay so-
NO ONE ACTED LIKE A NORMAL PERSON
the unicorn girl was bouncy and bubbly and blind to everything like pinkie but not nearly as endearing or self aware
main character failed to have a braincell in several scenes
the others are quite basic and i wish they had more character to them
and the entire story was... annoying?
First off, why were the crystals separated? why did they have ANY importance to how magic worked? also, if the mane 6 existed in the same world as these characters, why wasn’t it the elements of harmony? they CLEARLY don’t care about referencing the old generation, so why not have the elements exist, and then with the new characters they fuse and change form or something?
also the fake social media was kinda accurate yet SO overplayed and it was quite annoying for the one pink pegasus to say something about “wishing i recorded that live” or something.
pacing was god awful, everything felt like it could have split over several seasons (and if they do continue from here i hope they restart it. start from the beginning in the actual series. have this be a really cringy pilot but the actual plot fleshes things out. DO NOT, HASBRO, CONTINUE THE STORYLINE FROM DIRECTLY AFTER THE MOVIE I DOUBT ANYONE WOULD BE INTERESTED BESIDES 3 YEAR OLDS)
literally the entire concept of continuing from the old generation is really cute, i love that the earth pony girl was interested in the mane 6, but her entire personality is “oh we gotta Friendship Really Hard”
also the way that they talk about the separation between the ponies is awful. ESPECIALLY starting off the scene where everyone panics about the unicorn with a character who’s SO BLATANTLY IGNORING EVERYONE RUNNING AND SCREAMING. literally this only would fit pinkie pie and even pinkie would start to wonder why everyones RUNNING. AND. SCREAMING. IN FEAR.
i did enjoy seeing how they showed each group of ponies trying to hide that they have no magic but the way the unicorns were portrayed just felt... off. i get being superstitious but have you ever seen anyone repeatedly say “bing bong” to ‘ward off bad luck’? the closest i can get to something like that would be something like ocd but like. even then the entire town?? and “bing bong”?? really?? why not, like, actual things people do to ward off bad luck instead of “haha funny word”
also the way the red earth pony dude suddenly got to army-level power? first off, the imagery made me REALLY uncomfy, and how did he even do that so fast?? there was so little time that seemed to have passed... like a couple of days?
and i do understand people’s upsetness with the earth pony main character becoming an alicorn so quickly because twilight had to earn her wings over the course of the ‘entire season’ (after she got her wings that was supposed to be the end of the show but they kept going) and yet the main character here already got her wings?? and a unicorn horn?
literally, i just wish they had done something smaller for the movie, or waited for the series to come put, because it felt like they rushed the plot of the entire show they’re making but put it in an hour and 20 or so minutes. if all of this was like... built up? yeah
if i cared more abt the characters and had more ideas for the lore i’d draft a little rewrite idea but i hope yall can either do something better with the rough plot of the movie, or that hasbro makes things better in the actual season.
because 99% of the movie i was just sitting there like “no one speaks like this. no sentient being would ever react in this way”. in concept its good but the execution was awful, although pretty with the animation (especially the transition between the 2d in the beginning that resembled the mlp g4 movie’s animation and this 3d animation)
