Moon Knight #9: “Stranger” Review
Tumblr media
Moon Knight faces an atypical foe in another gorgeously rendered, if not as cohesive as usual, issue.
Freed from jail and turning up dead ends in the hunt for Zodiac, Moon Knight  returns to what he’s best at: hunting things that go bump in the night. This latest enemy isn’t one that Marc can beat into a pulp though. It’s a labyrinth, a never ending and impossible piece of architecture that has taken up residency in a Manhattan apartment building.
After the plot and crossover heavy plotting of the last several issues, “Stranger” gives Jed MacKay the chance to return to some of the self-contained monster of the week style plotting that popped up in the first several issues of his run. In a way, it functions as a nice breather from the ongoing Zodiac threat and the inventive antagonist for this issue makes for a unique reading experience.
However, it can’t help but feel less focused than previous issues. The story of Marc’s physical and psychological showdown with a mysterious, living labyrinth is intriguing and gorgeously rendered as usual. Alessandro Cappuccio does some incredible stuff with page layouts and environmental design to create a creepy sense of claustrophobia. But, while in the past MacKay has succeeded in effectively mirroring Marc’s missions with his own inner struggles and turmoil, “Stranger” ends up feeling a bit too cluttered to land its personal beats. It may be because of the stop gap pacing created by the Devil’s Reign crossover event or that several major plot twists which occurred at the end of issue seven are referenced in ways that are not always narrative clear, but “Stranger” doesn’t land its emotional beats in the ways that we’ve come to expect from MacKay’s tenure on the Fist of Khonshu.
That being said, this is still a damn fun monster of the week comic and it brings with it an entertaining new twist on the series status quo and an atypical addition to the series’ supporting cast. And it’s gorgeous. Of course. How could we expect any different? At the end of the day, a less good issue of Moon Knight is still a damn good comic.
Score: B

❝Quiet. For the first time in a long, long time, our mind is quiet. And I... I just let it wash over me. I let it be quiet. The doubt starts to creep in... Is the real? All I know for sure is that the rain feels real as it hits our face. Real enough, anyway. And that's good enough for us.❞
