Personal Quanzhi Gaoshou Fic Rec List

This is Part Three. To be honest, I found a considerable number of stories Marked for Later in my ao3 history that I had nearly forgotten about—thus this list was hurriedly put together. Part One and Part Two were much more well-planned and intentional.

1. Speak of the Devil With the opening of the tenth server, Lord Grim appears in the game with all the ability and experiences of the unseen God of Glory. He has the skill, he knows all the pros, he can give his side of every story anyone’s ever told about him, so—why are all the pros so sure he doesn’t exist?

2. Vivification An object that carries sentiment carries a spirit. A spirit with all the sentience necessary to hold its own emotions and opinions. Ye Xiu leaves Excellent Era the night before the tenth anniversary of Glory’s launch—the tenth anniversary of the day One Autumn Leaf was given a name that quickly gained a life of its own.

3. A Time Without Glory Sun Xiang wakes up in the past. Things go differently.

4. This Father Means Business Wei Chen takes his self-given ‘this father’ title seriously, and he’s been working on himself since leaving all his kids like that was, well, shitty. It’s still a work in progress, but for all that reaching back out to any of them is still tied up with his own shame, grief, and self-loathing, Wei Chen can’t just sit at home after watching the utter travesty that was Season 5.

5. Destiny's Favorite Child Someone who always wins, when they don’t have the skill or temperament for it—what would it take? How many times, to get it right? Could that ever be called a blessing?

6. Customer Support, Tenth Server, Glory v.1.10.8475463 A collection of tickets submitted to Glory Customer Support, Tenth Server. Because a completely bug-free game is unrealistic.

7. Unqualified Assistance No one has ever doubted the identity of the “team reporter’s assistant” following Excellent Era around to their games, but he sure takes slacking to a new level. How does he get so many exclusive interviews and never publish anything?! Ye Xiu would like to protest that he has, in fact, listened to their advice and published many articles. They’re just all Glory guides.

8. An Interlude Between Past and Future Ye Xiu may have retired from the Pro League, but that doesn't mean he's completely let go of Glory. Apart from his active role in cultivating the China Glory Team, sightings of him in Hangzhou have become dime-a-dozen. In fact, now that he's finally an "ordinary citizen", he seems to be making up for all his years as a mysterious recluse of a celebrity.

9. Never A Single-Player Game "What's your damn problem with me?" Tang Hao bites out, finally snapping after almost a week of Fang Rui ignoring him like the plague. "What's my problem with you, huh?" Fang Rui asks, almost blithe. "Why don't you take a close look at the account that you play on, then come back and ask that again."

10. Consider the Counterfactual “That person from Tiny Herb is here to negotiate some sort of transaction. It’s probably… about Qiu Fei’s transfer?” No one buys Team Excellent Era. Qiu Fei goes to Tiny Herb.

11. Breathe There will come a time where you see your past self in someone else. At that time, it will fall to you on whether you are willing to guide them to a better future, or let the cycle continue. No matter what, it is your choice, and you should follow your heart on it.

12. Spinning Wheel Four beds Su Mucheng slept in during her last year at Excellent Era.

13. Suspect “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” - Arthur Conan Doyle

14. The Pitfalls of Believing Gossip Everyone who meets Ye Qiu past 15 years old starts off thinking he still has an imaginary friend. Then they find out he used to always have his twin brother with him. Unfortunately, no one has enough courage to actually ask Ye Qiu about it.

15. 5 Members of Ye Xiu’s Mysterious Family that Team China Meet in Zurich (+1 Not Exactly Mysterious Person) In the ten years of the Glory Pro Alliance, no one has ever even heard anything about Ye Xiu's family, much less meet any of them. For some reason though, they all seem to crawl out of the woodwork in Zurich.

16. Penguin Day Out Ye Xiu’s day out with his niece takes a surprise turn.

17. no one knows what's happening (spoiler: zhouye is canon.) “Hey,” Huang Shaotian lowered his voice in a stage whisper, “Don’t you think Ye Xiu and Zhou Zekai have been awfully chummy lately?”

18. [zhou zekai's face of innocence.jpg] In which Zhang Xinjie gets a Berserker, Wang Jiexi gets a headache, and Ye Xiu gets fifty thousand yuan. Also, Zhou Zekai is the Unrivaled Super Hottie.

19. glory returns [once again] As part of the preparations for World's, Ye Xiu sets up a training match between Team China and Team Happy.

20. measure your life in love All the other pros often asked Su Mucheng why she’d never tried to get Ye Xiu to buy a phone. Su Mucheng had always just responded by smiling sweetly and saying some variation of “I don’t use my powers for evil”, and generally that was enough to make people back away.

21. all along in plain sight "First of all, we're not even friends," Xu Boyuan said. "He just shows up and torments me sometimes." “He shows up and torments you with free guides through a hundred-player dungeon,” Bound Boat said flatly. "Where do I sign up for this kind of torment?"

22. write on the wall His first thirty or so minutes at Happy Internet Café, Fang Rui felt like an explorer in foreign land, observing the customs of a strange people.

23. blood is thicker than water The Ye twins were allergic to talking about their honest emotions, but somehow they still brought out the best in each other anyway.

24. unrestrained summer fun You can lead the pro player to summer camp, but you can’t make him stop swearing in front of the cameras.

i think about where george lucas had planned to take star wars more than i should, but particularly because i am fascinated by the original idea of vader going to luke himself and asking for help atoning, which was cut and condensed into ROTJ for time constraints. and i want to write it. i really do. but the unfortunate thing is that i was of the generation of kids who watched avatar: the last airbender growing up, and all i can think about is vader testing his fucking opening lines like zuko does. the concept of HEY, LORD VADER HERE is irresistably funny

My dad and I once had a disagreement over him using the adage "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

I said, "That's just not true. Sometimes what doesn't kill you leaves you brittle and injured or traumatized."

He stopped and thought about that for a while. He came back later, and said, "It's like wood glue."

He pointed to my bookshelf, which he helped me salvage a while ago. He said, "Do you remember how I explained that, once we used the wood glue on them, the shelves would actually be stronger than they were before they broke?"

I did.

"But before we used the wood glue, those shelves were broken. They couldn't hold up shit. If you had put books on them, they would have collapsed. And that wood glue had to set awhile. If we put anything on them too early, they would have collapsed just the same as if we'd never fixed them at all. You've got to give these things time to set."

It sounded like a pretty good metaphor to me, but one thing I did pick up on was that whatever broke those shelves, that's not the thing that made them stronger. That just broke them. It was being fixed that made them stronger. It was the glue.

So my dad and I agreed, what doesn't kill you doesn't actually make you stronger, but healing does. And if you feel like healing hasn't made you stronger than you were before, you're probably not done healing. You've got to give these things time to set.

Ok but Zuko using the knowledge he acquired during his banishment to help him as the Fire Lord. Like making small talk with Earth Kingdom dignitaries about their local foods that he enjoyed and even misses. Like having in-depth conversations with his captains about sea currents and navigation. Like, in the middle of a meeting with several high-ranking naval officials, pointing out flails in security, like how a person can cling to a Fire Nation ship for hours at a time, or climb aboard using hatches on the upper decks, or disguise themselves as a lower ranking guard with easily accessible spare armour….

Though none of his experiences can prepare Zuko for the long, awkward silence that comes after he admits to doing or at least knowing something illegal and/or completely buck wild

One thing about fandom culture is that it sort of trains you to interact with and analyze media in a very specific way. Not a BAD way, just a SPECIFIC way.

And the kind of media that attracts fandoms lends itself well (normally) to those kinds of analysis. Mainly, you're supposed to LIKE and AGREE with the main characters. Themes are built around agreeing with the protagonists and condemning the antagonists, and taking the protagonists at their word.

Which is fine if you're looking at, like, 99% of popular anime and YA fiction and Marvel movies.

But it can completely fall apart with certain kinds of media. If someone who has only ever analyzed media this way is all of a sudden handed Lolita or 1984 or Gatsby, which deal in shitty unreliable narrators; or even books like Beloved or Catcher in the Rye (VERY different books) that have narrators dealing with and reacting to challenging situations- well... that's how you get some hilariously bad literary analysis.

I dont know what my point here is, really, except...like...I find it very funny when people are like "ugh. I hate Gatsby and Catcher because all the characters are shitty" which like....isnt....the point. Lololol you arent supposed to kin Gatsby.

Another really funny plot concept for "Jedi leave the Republic for their own safety/survival well before the war hits" is that Dooku goes out, claims his title as Count of Serenno, and then just invites his entire ten-thousand-strong extended Jedi Family to join him.

Who's going to stop him? His planetary government, that he's in charge of and can easily convince that Jedi are a good thing for agriculture and education and medicine? The Republic?

Sidious is left staring because not only did he fail to make this rich old former Jedi fall, but the rich old former Jedi stole all the Jedi he was in charge of, including ten-year-old Skywalker.

Fic Update: Entwined Ch. 10

For those of you who have been patiently waiting for this AND for those of you completely new to the fic, Ch. 10 of my ongoing tomarry soulmate AU is up on Ao3!

This update features a four-year time jump, Tom's inability to attend a party without a predetermined agenda for his intended social interactions, and a delicious misunderstanding that surely won't cause problems down the line.

For any new readers (or for anyone who wants/needs to start from the beginning since it's been . . . a hot minute since the last update), here's the link to Ch. 1.

Lastly, Entwined hit two thousand kudos today, which is insane. I am genuinely blown away by the response to this fic that I started years ago as a first attempt at contributing content to the tomarrymort community. So thank you to everyone who has left kudos and written out comments and recced this story to your fellow fanfic fiends. My heart is very full because of you.

If anyone is interested, I'm willing to reveal one character's soulmate early, as a little thank you/celebration for 2k 💖

actually got a couple thousand words down for entwined today after feeling blocked and uninspired by my draft of the next chapter for too many months \o/

so here's a little unedited snip for any of you still following this fic (ily)

Heir Potter’s eyes scanned around, frantically looking to see if anyone else had noticed the magic surge. Even as he calmed slightly at the realization no one else had seen what had happened, Heir Potter stood before him, rigid and tense and clearly about to make his excuses. Before he could, Mr. Fraser, with an air of nonchalance that even Tom found impressive in the wake of the little scene, exclaimed, “Oh, I love this song!” It was the les patineurs valse, and it had already been playing for at least two minutes. “Harry, you must dance with me! Excuse us, Lord Slytherin.” The boy sent a full-teethed, false smile Tom’s way and pulled his friend away as quickly and inconspicuously as he could. It only took a few steps before Potter processed the exit strategy his friend had employed and matched the other boy’s pace instead of allowing himself to be towed onto the dance floor. Tom chuckled under his breath too softly for anyone else to hear as he watched both boys move into the lead position before a mutual narrowing of eyes led to Mr. Fraser sighing and switching to the follow position. It hadn’t even been a full thirty seconds since Heir Potter’s magic had surged, and his two snakes were already waltzing in perfect time with the other couples moving about the ballroom as if nothing had happened. Impressive.
