It might simply be that I don’t frequent ADHD forums enough but I haven’t seen a whole lot of talk about learned social withdrawal.
As a child I made friends left and right but as we all turned into self-conscious teenagers it slowly became more and more difficult for me. Plain and simple, other people thought I was weird. For some reason I never got bullied which I think is related to something my teachers kept telling my parents “She’s such a sweet, bright child and we can tell she’s not malicious or trying to be disruptive on purpose but we can’t teach her anything”
Basically people couldn’t figure me out. I had good social skills with both children and adults, I had a good moral compass, i felt compassion and empathy for others and was willing to go against my friends if I felt they were being bullies, I taught myself English and my drawings showed good observation skills. Because of all that it was decided I should start school a year sooner than most kids and my parents were very proud. Unfortunately that’s probably one of the main reasons why I was never diagnosed with raging ADHD as a child. People soon realized I didn’t do well in a school setting but assumed it was because I “wasn’t done playing” and my ADHD symptoms were interpreted as childishness.
So as I got older my classmates started to distance themselves from me. They were always kind and friendly but they didn’t know how to deal with me and ever since then people have always been worryingly comfortable with calling me weird to my face. I get the impression it’s because they think it’s a choice on my part. To them I’m clearly of “normal intelligence” so I must be acting like this on purpose and my parents would repeatedly tell me to “just act normal” as a child when I told them I was struggling to make friends. I tried so damn hard but kept failing. I knew something had to be different about me and when I first heard about ADHD I thought “That’s me! That’s how I feel!” but my parents said that was impossible because I wasn’t hyperactive.
Because nobody wanted to help me I eventually learned to just stop trying to make friends and keep to myself. I was so tired of being told by friendly, well-meaning people that I was so weird and quirky and unique only for them to distance themselves once they realized it was permanent and not something I could turn on and off for parties. I always enjoyed being alone so it wasn’t a huge loss but it did feel incredibly lonely at times.
Things got a lot better when I became an adult, mostly because adults are generally more chill than teens so my ADHD behavior isn’t as embarrassing to them and ironically they’re often surprised to learn I don’t make friends easily. Unfortunately I learned to be withdrawn in my formative years so new friends are still a rarity. Before I really sat down and put my past into context I even started to wonder if I had autism despite not connecting with anything autistic people said about their experiences. I went as far as to be tested but wasn’t surprised when the diagnosis was negative because of course it was, I kinda already knew that. I was just looking for an explanation.
So while there can be overlap between ADHD and autism (I have just such a friend) my experience is also that oftentimes people with ADHD simply learn to stay away from social situations and entertain ourselves which ends up looking like autism to outsiders.

I sometimes get asked if Scandinavian countries have cryptids like Big Foot and Mothman, and not just old folklore creatures like elves and trolls, and though I’m sure there are some they must to be very local because I haven’t heard about any.
I think Americans have to understand that your Frogmen, Nightcrawlers and Jersey Devils are your folklore creatures. You’re in the process of making your own folklore and I think that’s beautiful. Now you just have to get creative with it and imagine what type of culture those creatures have, the same way Scandinavians imagined trolls and gnomes to be enemies because gnomes protects houses and churches, or how the long-breasted troll/elf women Slattenpatte were hunted by the dark hunting party of the night, and of course the elf king sometimes had parties where he invited all the other creatures.
Tumblr media
You need to imagine Big Foot and Mothman having tea parties where the nightcrawlers aren’t invited because they only drink soda or something.

“Oh yeah we caught a ghost on tape during one of our rehearsals of The Rocky Horror Show. It happened during the scene where they’re fucking each other in the ass on stage”
“Uh, what? I’ve seen The Rocky Horror Show and I don’t remember a scene where they…fuck each other in the ass on stage”
“Clearly you haven’t seen our version then”
- An old woman who works at a theater to a journalist
I’m so sorry I forgot which theater but it’s from “Manden der drog ud for at blive bange” and it was too funny not to share.

I just visited a library for the first time in, I dunno, seven years and oh my god the childhood memories.
If at all possible take the children in your life to a library once a month if not more. It will give them such a special view of the world. I felt so calm walking around, smelling the old books and looking at the people. Young students, immigrants studying up on their tests, old people chatting, women in their 30’s hunkering down with books on sewing. It probably also helped that this library is an extension to the social services building so you literally get people from all walks of life who need to register stuff or renew their passports and whatnot.
As an adult I’ve realized I grew up pretty poor and the library must have been a lifesaver for my parents. Our mom is a bookworm and would take us there regularly and while she looked for novels in the boring adult part of the library my brother and I dug through the children’s library where we could get comics, movies and games. And it was the one place we could get anything we wanted because it was all free. Now as an adult I realized it also accustomed me to all sorts of people that I wouldn’t necessarily have met as a child.
It’s just a really good and cool place y’all.

Sometimes I get in a silly mood and my housemate described the look my dogs give me as “I can’t be bothered to tell her off because this isn’t going to hurt but it’s going to be REALLY annoying”
…I just now realized why people always comment on why I have such chill dogs. It’s because they’re used to humans (me) doing bizarre shit that never ever ends in pain so they just let people do their thing no matter how weird.

Turns out I’ve been illegally trafficked drugs across borders when I brought my CBD oil with me to Norway.
Had a slightly worrying conversation with a Norwegian who was very upset that she can’t buy CDB oil legally in her home country and I’m sitting there like “I have a vial in my suitcase right now…Oh no, am I the lamest drug trafficker in the world?”
It didn’t even occur to me that I could be doing something illegal because you can buy CBD oil in fucking make-up stores in Denmark.
I understand her pain though. CBD oil has been extremely helpful managing my insomnia and anxiety (Funny thing is, I bought it to help with insomnia but noticed a change in my anxiety levels first. I didn’t even know I had anxiety until I didn’t have it anymore) and I wouldn’t be functioning half as well as I do now without it.

Why does this dog look so uncanny? I’m sure it’s very lovely but it looks like a fantasy dog or like it was drawn by a monk from the Middle Ages.
My friend and I tried to work out what it is about it that looks so uncanny. I have a chihuahua which already looks like a mess with similar proportions and a Shih tzu with a short snout so neither of those things come off as weird to me.
So this is an honest question. Does this dog look uncanny to you too and if so why? I’m beyond fascinated by this girl.

Felt an urgent need to draw Abijah Fowler and Heiji Shindo woodcut print shunga after watching Blue Eye Samurai.
I’m sure some of you are thinking “Why she do my boy Abijah so dirty!?” and it’s because I wanted it to look like a woodcut print from the edo period and they almost always drew white men as pink, wrinkled, hairy, big-nosed monsters unless they were trying to flatter someone. Especially in shunga where they were used as a contrast to the pristine beauty of the Japanese. If anything I toned it the fuck down.

I never thought I’d see the day when I had to make sure my passport was renewed and my papers were in order because there’s a chance my safety might depend on it in a year or two but here I am.

At the last family get together my brother sat beside me in private, gave me a very serious look and asked “My girlfriend and I want to know, is your housemate actually your girlfriend?”
I just smiled and told him no, I’m not attracted to women like that and neither is she.
“Okay, we just had to know because we would feel real shitty if you were dating and we never invited her to family stuff, and you have so many lesbian and trans and gay friends and whatnot so we weren’t sure”
My family is so sweet and accepting I almost think they’ll rejoice the day they get a proper queer member. Even my mom who doesn’t know all the proper terminology was upset that I kept referring to a nonbinary friend of mine who is on T as “she” and I had to explain to her that my friend and I already had several talks about it and my friend had told me she preferred she right now but if that changed in the future I’d of course follow her wishes.
Whatever queer kid gets born into this family down the line will get all the love and all the ignorant questions because the family won’t have a clue but they will try very hard.

When artists depicts zodiac signs what would you wish people focused more on with your sign and did less?
For example, I already did mine, Sagittarius, where I feel like people get too focused on the bow and arrow and depict them as cool hunters instead of focusing more on the actual description of them as freedom loving travelers and students who’s always “on the hunt” for knowledge, forever trying to expand their worldview. Someone who’s not always reliable because their feet take them in all sorts of directions and though they’ll happily travel with you they won’t settle down so if you prefer to stay in one place the best relationship you can hope for is a visit from them every time they’re in town so to speak. Sorta like a Snufkin type. Ergo, I prefer depictions of Sagittarius as a traveler or even a vagabond depending on how positive or negative you wanna go with the traits.
I want to take another stab at all the zodiac signs some day so I NEED to hear you opinion on how you’d like to see your own sign depicted and what you’re sick of seeing.

I’d say the person in the back use crutches disguised as the third pair of legs. That’ll make it more comfortable for the person to walk around bent over for long periods of time and their head could be the bump on Appa’s back.
I’m pretty surprised that I haven’t seen any Appa cosplayers take inspiration from lion dance costumes. I know he’s a sky bison but I always thought he looked like a cute lion dance costume come to life. Here’s just some examples of furry variants.

They can have some very expressive faces with blinking eyes and mouths that open, no batteries needed, and people aren’t secretive about how they make them.

I understand that making a wire head takes specialized skills but cosplayers have made crazier things than this.

Insomnia hit hard last night and I fell down a rabbit hole of those super realistic posable animal dolls/stuffed toys. Now I keep thinking about how funny it would be if an instagram influencer bought one of those things and sometimes had it posing in the background of photos as if it was moving around the house and how long it would take for people to catch on that something was wrong with it and eventually it would turn into an inconsequential conspiracy theory that it wasn’t a real animal while others insisted it had to be real because who would do something like that? (Me. I would do that)

My heart. Children can be so cute sometimes.
I was at a family gathering and was sitting with my dog Ellie on my lap on the sofa when my three years old nephew came over and started petting her semi-roughly and got all up in her face because he thought she was cute. I was about to tell him he was being too rough when Ellie did it for me and snapped. I’m not sure what it’s called in English but we call it “marking” where a dog will make a move like they’re about to bite but don’t actually bite. You know, the last warning a dog will give you to stop. He was understandably shocked and I felt bad about not stopping it sooner but he didn’t start crying or swat at her in anger. He seemed more embarrassed than anything and we had a talk about it.
Later I saw him sitting on the floor with a bunch of toy food and a tea set, and opposite him sat Ellie watching him with curiosity. He looked at her for a few seconds. I was worried he was scared of her now or possibly angry, but then he placed a plastic plate with fake broccoli in front of her and poured her a cup of imaginary tea.
It’s just to sickeningly sweet that neither held any grudges about what had happened and were now having a tea party.

Here’s a job you probably never even knew existed but is perfect for episodic stories.
Years and years ago I worked for a substitute/temp company, meaning other companies could ask for, say, five workers for any kind of job for anywhere from a day to a month and my company would then pick out five of their employees with suitable skills and ask us if we wanted to take the job.
You can imagine I ended up getting all sorts of wacky experiences. This was the job where I was hired to clean a dirty old kitchen with 10 other people at a mansion but got lost one day and walked into a cultish room with an altar and thrones lined up along the wall.
And when I say any kind of job I mean it. People asked for all sorts of unskilled work but the company also got requests for specialized work that only certain workers could do. I spent a week in an empty building where I only saw the other worker who had been hired along with me attaching wheels to carts. At another job we were sent up through a hole in the ceiling at a mall where we cleaned out old boxes. A particularly beautiful job entailed “braiding” small transparent tubes down a wall at a temporary closed factory while the sun was shining through ceiling windows which made the tubes glitter like glass. No idea what that job was about. We did anything from cleaning to preparing food to clearing a building site to factory work to hauling fish to painting to looking after animals to-
And if you like dressing your characters up you’re going to love this; our company didn’t have their own uniform because we were always dressed in the uniforms of the companies we were hired out to, or the companies would dress us in work appropriate clothes like overalls or aprons. I was once handed a cute long dress to wear while I sold pancakes.
I realize some of it sounds dangerous but it was all perfectly safe. Sometimes companies just needed extra help with something for a few days. The only reason why I stopped was because the work wasn’t stable and you never knew how far you’d have to travel to the next job. It was fun though.
